Good morning. It’s Friday, July 15, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.  And a heads up — Cynopsis Kids is on vacation next week, returning on Monday, July 25th — have a good week!

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has announced the nominations for the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards, which covers programming from the eligibility period – June 1, 2010 through May 31, 2011.  Among the kid-targeted networks, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network lead the way with six nominations each, followed by Disney Channel with two nods, and Disney XD and TeenNick with one apiece.  Hosted by actress Jane Lynch, the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards will air Sunday, September 18 at 8p, live from the Nokia Theatre L.A., on Fox.  The program will be executive produced by Mark Burnett.  The Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards will take place on Saturday, September 10, and Spike Jones Jr will executive produce.  Below are nominees in several categories.  A complete list of the Primetime Emmy nominations can be found at www.emmys.com .

SLR Productions‘ new animated preschool series Guess How Much I Love You – The Adventures of Little Nutbrown Hare (52×11) will make its world premiere on Disney Junior in Australia and New Zealand on Sunday, September 4, 2011 (which is Father’s Day there) at 4:30p, exclusively on the Foxtel and Austar platforms in Australia and Sky NZ in New Zealand.  The series is based on the classic Guess How Much I Love You picture book by author Sam McBratney and illustrated by Anita Jeram, which is published by Walker Books.  To coincide with series broadcast debut, Walker Books Australia will release the new Guess How Much I Love You The Pop Up Edition in October.  The series has also been acquired by broadcasters in Germany, Canada, Finland and Sweden, and is set to air on Disney Junior in the US.

Monster Distributes completes TV and DVD deals for a number of animated series:  ATV (Turkey) acquires Abby Careful and Hippothesis; Irib Media (Iran) picks up Birdy and Gazoon; Tooniverse (South Korea) also takes Hippothesis; Urania (Czech Republic) licenses Indian Fables; Five Star Distributions picks up the DVD distribution rights in Brazil for Kids Ten Commandments and The Storykeepers; Good TV picks up Read & Share for Taiwan, China and the Philippines; SAT 7 picks up cable and satellite rights for Gigi and Read & Share for the Middle East and North Africa; additionally, Andalusian Public Broadcaster Canal Sur TV, which has comes on board to co-produce the preschool series Abby Careful, will also air the series later this year.

Disney Publishing Worldwide releases Winnie the Pooh: What’s a Bear to Do?, its first app for the Android platform, this week to coincides with today’s release of the Winnie the Pooh feature film.  The kid/family app offers narration in five languages (English, French, German, Spanish and Japanese) all in one download, as well as sound effects and familiar Winnie the Pooh music.  Kids can also switch out of the narration option and the other reading modes, record (listen to) their own voice and read the story at their own pace.  The app also feature four interactive jigsaw puzzles, Pooh’s Cupboard matching game, which ties into the story, and Tap ‘n’ Play activities – featuring new animations for the Android version.

MARKETING/LICENSING

CPLG and American Greetings Properties (AGP) team with McDonald’s for a new Strawberry Shortcake Happy Meal and Might Kids Meal promotion for North America this summer.  Running now through July 28, the girl-targeted Strawberry Shortcake: Berry Bitty City Scent-Sation promotion features one of six Strawberry Shortcake character toys, each with its own fruit scent and motion with purchase of a Happy Meal or Mighty Kids Meal.  Each of the Strawberry Shortcake Happy Meal toys comes with an online code that unlocks a virtual accessory based on Strawberry Shortcake characters in McDonald’s virtual McWorld at www.happymeal.com .

Italy’s The Giochi Preziosi Group inks a deal with Vtech to produce a new Puppy in My Pocket: Adventures in Pocketville laptop, which will be based on the animated TV series, for France, Germany and Spain.  Expected to be available from spring 2012, the kid-targeted laptop will feature character voices, an ABC keyboard, and a range of educational activities (e.g. letters, basic math, logic, memory skills) and various animations on the LCD screen.  The Puppy in My Pocket: Adventures in Pocketville, TV series, co-produced with MEG and Mondo TV, launched this month in all three territories.

Sanrio and Yogurtland partner for a co-branded promotion at Yogurtland stores.  The six week promotion, which begins this July 21 (July 28 in Hawaii and Guam, August 4 in Mexico City), will offer limited edition merchandise featuring Sanrio properties including Hello Kitty, My Melody, Keroppi and Chococat.  Merchandise will feature a Hello Kitty plush dressed in a Yogurtland uniform, keychains ($3.50), and t-shirts ($19.99) showcasing all four characters.  Also as part of the partnership, the Yogurtland cup and biodegradable spoons will feature Sanrio characters during the promotion.  Additionally, Yogurtland ( www.yogurt-land.com ) and Sanrio ( www.sanrio.com ) will host a promotional sweepstakes for fans.

RATINGS

Cartoon Network‘s premiere of the third season of its animated series Adventure Time on Monday, July 11 at 8p, surpasses the previous seasons debuts among kids and boy demos.

  • The new season launch of Adventure Time outpaced the debut of season 2 (October 11, 2010) with K2-11 by +41% (1,687,000), K6-11 up +52% (1,318,000), and Tweens 9-14 with an increase of +92% (1,060,000).
  • Season 3 also debuted strongly among boy viewers, which were also up over the previous season, with Boys 2-11 up by +48% (1,282,000), Boys 6-11 up +50% (1,005,000), and Boys 9-14 +71% (766,000).
