Good morning. It’s Friday, January 22, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Miffy is heading to the big screen. Telescreen B. V. and m43 will introduce Miffy The Movie, a new 70-minute stop-motion feature film based on the books by author/illustrator Dick Bruna, at the European Film Market in Berlin, February 11-21, 2010. Targeted to preschoolers and their families, Miffy The Movie is currently in pre-production and slated for delivery in November 2011. Featuring five story segments that link together to support an overall story, the movie is unique in that it marks the first time that a Miffy project will feature voices. Telescreen Film Productions, a unit of Telescreen B.V., is co-producing Miffy The Movie with Dutch public broadcaster KRO, featuring a budget of about $4.5 million, and with development support of the Media program of the European Union and Dutch Film Fund. A production/distribution/brand management company, Telescreen is part of m4e.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Could the rumor of the last few weeks be coming true? Martin Scorsese is reportedly in discussions with GK Films to helm a feature film adaptation Brian Selznick’s gorgeous tween-targeted novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret, per Variety. Though there is no distribution deal in place just yet, GK Films is said to be talking to Sony and Paramount, the movie is expected to being production in May 2010. If the project moves forward Scorsese is expected to partner again with producer Graham King; the two worked together on The Departed.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Big Fish Entertainment enters into a partnership with National Theater for Children to distribute the new weekly, educational/informational (E/I) financial literacy TV series, Mad About Money (30 minute episodes). The teen-targeted series is based on the national live school tour of the same name. Set to premiere in fall 2010, Mad About Money has been cleared on Tribune, Sinclair, Newport and Acme station groups.
More Next X news. Disney XD US will premiere Winter Next X on Monday, February 8 at 5p. New episodes of Winter Next X will air daily through Saturday, February 13. The episodes will also be available at DisneyXD.com ( www.disneyxd.com ) soon after running on the network. This new round of short-form Next X series will feature pro athletes Simon Dumont (skier), Andreas Wiig (snowboarder), Sammy Carlson (skier) and Chas Guldemond (snowboarder) mentoring amateur tween competitors in their sports. Originating from the Winter X Games 14 in Aspen, Winter Next X is sponsored by Sega’s Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. The Next X series was developed by Disney XD in association with ESPN, and is produced by Transition Productions (ESPN X Games/Winter X Games, Ultimate Parkour Challenge).
Double order of Robot Chicken. Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block gives the go ahead to creators/executive producers Seth Green and Matthew Senreich for two additional seasons (40 episodes), seasons five and six, of their stop-motion animated series Robot Chicken. The series is produced under Green and Senreich’s Stoopid Monkey Productions, in conjunction with Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico’s ShadowMachine Films. While not targeted to kids, Robot Chicken is pretty great, and I know plenty of kids who watch the show. Adult Swim airs nightly 10p-6a.
Echo Bridge Entertainment inks a deal with Turner Broadcasting System Latin America to launch the teen-targeted drama Instant Star (52×30) on Boomerang in Latin America. Boomerang will air all four seasons of Instant Star in Latin America beginning March 2010. The series is being dubbed in Spanish by Centauro.

Channel One News is partnering with AdoptaPlatoon, a non-profit organization, to invite students to convey their appreciation to US troops and let them know about the positive activities taking place in their communities at home. Channel One News will work with teachers to assign a platoon for their school or classroom, and then students can reach out and boost troop morale via cards, letters, pictures, and videos and care packages. Students and teachers can find more information about the program and sign up by February 5 at www.channelone.com.
