Cynopsis: Kids!

02/05/10

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 5, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Spin Master Entertainment, a division of Spin Master Ltd., and animation studio Titmouse are partnering to co-develop and produce a new tween animated music TV series The Special Offers.  Created by Titmouse’s VP Keith Fay, the series will feature music by Fay and Gina Shock — yes, you remember her as the drummer of the Go Go’s (she has also penned songs for Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Miranda Cosgrove).  Fay previously produced the first two seasons of Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse, and was also creative producer for in-game cinematics scenes on the last five Guitar Hero video games.  The series follows four music-loving misfit kids that form a band, The Special Offers.  Each episode will feature an original song, culminating in a soundtrack release at the end of the season.  We can also look forward to a live tour.  Spin Master Entertainment will serve as the global merchandising, licensing agent and toy maker for the property, with Titmouse Entertainment creating the animated series and retaining the global music rights.  Spin Master’s Matt Wexler and Jennifer Picherack and Titmouse’s Fay and Shannon Prynoski will serve as Executive Producers of the TV series.  Schock will serve as a producer and will collaborate on original music with Fay for the series.

The Kratt Brothers head back into the wild in the new animated wildlife adventure/comedy series Wild Kratts (40×22).  Targeted to K6-9, Wild Kratts will premiere in January 2011 on PBS Kids Go!, and in Canada on TVOntario, Knowledge Network and Tele-Quebec, and will be showcased next week at the KidScreen Summit in NYC.  Co-produced and distributed by The Kratt Brothers Company and 9 Story Entertainment, the series follows animated versions of real life zoologist brothers Chris and Martin Kratt as they take viewers on adventures where they explore habitats of unusual animals.  In each episode the brothers work to help animals in crisis, often instigated by their nemesis Zach Varmitech and his mission to collect endangered animals. 9 Story Entertainment will distribute the series outside of North America.  The Kratt’s created and produced Kratt’s Creatures, Zoboomafoo and Kratt Brothers: Be The Creature.

PorchLight Entertainment adds the new Flash animated series Agent A to Agent Z (52×11) to its development slate.  Created by Andy Rash (author/illustrator) and Dan Yaccarino (author/creator, Oswald, Willa’s Wild Life) and based on Rash’s kid’s book of the same name published by Arthur A. Levine Books, Agent A to Agent Z is a comedy/mystery that revolves around the misadventures of a father and son (12-yr-old Aaron) spy duo and their secret missions.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

A sequel to Disney‘s live-action movie Enchanted (2007, Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey) is in the works as the studio taps Jessie Nelson (Fred Claus, I Am Sam, Corrina, Corrina) to write a script for a follow-up movie, which would be directed by Anne Fletcher (The Proposal, 27 Dresses), per Variety.  Barry Josephson and Barry Sonnenfeld will again serve as producers.  The initial Enchanted movie was written by Bill Kelly and directed by Kevin Lima

MORE KIDS STUFF

Classic Media acquires international distribution rights across all media worldwide, including licensing and merchandising, to the new tween-targeted digital animated series My Life Me (52×11), which is produced by Canada’s CarpeDiem Film & TV and France’s ODM.  Canadian kids broadcaster, Teletoon Canada and French Broadcasters, FranceTelevisions and Canal J backed the co-production, and are slated to launch the series in 2010.  Co-created by JC Little, Cindy Filipenko and Svetlana Chmakova (author young adult comic book Dramacon), My Life Me is a comedy that follows four characters trying to make sense of being a tween.  The digital animation used to produce My Life Me features employs manga aesthetics, such as stylized black and white comic book panels as a backdrop to characters to express their feelings.  In addition to the TV program, an internet component, comprised of 26 original shorts, 9 bloopers and 4 music videos, are also being produced and will be available from spring 2010.

UK broadcaster Five acquires the terrestrial rights to the animated preschool series Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom from E1 Kids.  Five plans to debut the series this April 2010 as part of its preschool Milkshake programming block.  An original Nick Jr. UK commission and created by Astley Baker Davies (Peppa Pig), Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom made its UK satellite premiere on Nick Jr in April 2009.  With 14 licensees already signed on, Penguin will be the first to launch product this March with a line of story, activity and novelty books.  The full licensing range will be available from July 2010, including a toy line from Golden Bear.

Foothill Entertainment enters into an exclusive distribution deal with France-based Toon Factory for several of its series.  Under the deal Foothill will serve as the exclusive representative in the US and Australian for Toon Factory’s new series Samson & Neon in HD, as well as three other series, Brady’s Beast, Kid Clones, and Franky Snow.  Foothill will launch these series next week at the KidScreen Summit’s KidScreen Connect.  Samson & Neon recently debuted on France 3 (France).

DHX Interactive launches the Living Stories app for iPhone/iPod Touch.  Targeted to preschoolers, the Living stories app provides kids with animated interactive storybooks that they can read on their own or along with narration (English).  Readers can also record their own narration.  The Living Stories app debuts with the Hans Christian Andersen stories The Princess and the Pea and King Midas ($1.99/each).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Chronicle Books will release the newest board book feature Paul Frank Industries’ character Julius.  Targeted to infants and toddlers, the newest book, High Five with Julius, features multi-colored illustrations, touch and feel textures, and encourages little kids to celebrate everyday achievements.  The book will be available at Target and Toys ‘R’ Us early this year.

STONE SOUP

Continuing to embrace social media, WhiteHouse.gov is collaborating with National Healthy Mothers and Healthy Babies Coalition on a new text4baby campaign, enabling users to send text messages to help expectant mothers and mothers of infants. Sign up for three weekly messages timed to the stage of their child’s development, and get tips on subjects including nutrition and immunization by texting the word “baby” or “bebe” to 511411.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Chorion continues to grow its licensing team with the appointment of Lauren LaBumbard as Director/Retail Development.  She will be responsible for expanding the presence of Chorion’s properties at key US retailers, as well as exploring direct to retail partnerships.  LaBumbard previously toiled in retail development positions for VIZ Media, Signatures Network, and 4 Kids Entertainment.
