Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 4, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

In London, Penguin Children’s Books establishes a new kid-centric licensing division, Media and Entertainment as it builds its efforts to support the growing kids licensing market.  Headed by Eric Huang, newly promoted to Publishing Director, the Media and Entertainment group combines the BBC, Sunbird and Ladybird Licensing teams.  Juliet Matthews becomes Publisher of the BBC Children’s, Ladybird Licensing and Sunbird imprints, overseeing the editorial and design teams, as well as maintaining her key role in the BBC joint venture.  She will report into Huang.  Meg Wang is upped to Editorial Director and will head up the editorial team, reporting to Matthews.  Rose Gardner is promoted to Junior Editor, reporting to Wang.  In the design area, Ben Hughes has been promoted to Senior Designer.

Entertainment One Family (eOne Family) announces Nick Jr. UK has commissioned a second season of the preschool animated series Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom for 2012.  Animation studio Astley Baker Davies will begin production on the new 52 episodes of the series this summer.  The new season of Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom will debut first in the UK and then roll out around the world.  eOne will also re-launch the official Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom (  ) website later this month.  Additionally, a new Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom DVD title, Gaston’s Visit, is slated for an April 4, 2011 release.  The series launched in April 2009 on Nick Jr. UK and then on Channel Five’s Milkshake! (UK), and is now also available in 150 territories.

Disney Channel will premiere The Suite Life Movie, its new original TV movie based on its Suite Life TV franchise, on Friday, March 25 at 8p, simulcast on Sprint TV and MobiTV.  The Suite Life Movie once again stars brothers Dylan and Cole Sprouse as Zack and Cody, who also serve as executive producers on the movie, as well as Brenda Song, Debby Ryan, Matthew Timmons and Phill Lewis.  The movie will be available for preview from March 22 via Disney Channel On Demand.  Following its TV debut, the movie will be available for purchase on iTunes beginning Tuesday, April 5, and then available from April 24 as part of Netflix’s Watch Instantly option.  Filmed on location in Vancouver, the movie features a screenplay penned by Michael Saltzman (writer The Pink Panther, EP Murphy Brown) and Robert Horn (writer Broadway’s 13, writer/producer Designing Women, writer Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure), and is directed by Sean McNamara (EP Even Stevens, producer That’s So Raven, director Zeke and Luther).

MarVista Entertainment completes further international TV deals for Saban Brands new Power Rangers Samurai series with Canada’s Corus Entertainment and Teletoon Canada, the latter of which is co-owned (50/50) by Corus and Astral Media.  Corus Entertainment and Teletoon Canada have acquired all cable TV rights to the new Power Rangers Samurai series, which will premiere on Nickelodeon in Canada Friday, February 11 at 8p, followed by Teletoon’s French-language service later this spring.  Additionally, Cable TV rights to select classic Power Rangers episodes have also been picked up by Teletoon Canada for broadcast on its classic cartoon channels, Teletoon Retro English and Teletoon Retro French.
