Cynopsis: Kids!



Good morning. It’s Friday, February 19, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

BBC Switch, BBC’s teen-targeted brand, picks up a new six-part documentary series, Single, Together, Whatever, from independent production company Firecracker Films.  Set to air in the Switch zone on BBC Two (Saturdays 12p-2p), the 6×30 minute episodes explore what UK teens (14-18) think about relationships and love, and how they function in those relationships.  Each episode follows different teens, couples and single individuals, as they experience the good and the bad parts of relationships.

Twilight fans have been waiting for a movie trailer for Summit Entertainment‘s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse movie – and now they’re getting one (cover your ears to protect them from the screams of joy).  The Eclipse trailer will be shown ahead of Summit’s upcoming movie Remember Me (PG-13), which opens March 12, per Coming Soon.  Oh  and in case you’ve been away from our planet it stars Robert Pattinson, who also stars in the Twilight movies.  The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is set for release on June 30, 2010.


Nickelodeon picks up a second season of its new kid game show BrainSurge.  Production on the new season or 40 episodes will commence this spring 2010, with Jeff Sutphen returning as host.  In addition to the BrainSurge TV series (Monday-Friday at 4:30p), kids can play the game online at .  BrainSurge is produced by 310 Entertainment and Stone & Company.

In Canada Family Channel, Astral Media’s commercial kid/family network, will premiere Disney Channel’s new original TV movie StarStruck on Friday, March 19 at 7:30p.  The movie will also be available on Family OnDemand (an SVOD service) from March 16-April 5.  StarStruck premieres as part of Family Channel’s week of spring break programming Monday-Friday, March 15-19 and Monday-Friday, March 29-April 2.

The animated preschool series the WotWots (52×10) will premiere in Canada on Treehouse on February 22, 2010 at 6:15p.  The WotWots will air regularly on Treehouse on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6:15p, and Saturdays at 6:30p and Sundays at 1:40p.  Created by Weta Workshop’s Richard Taylor and Martin Bantyon, the WotWots made its initial launch in New Zealand on TVNZ last year and currently airs on TV2 and TVNZ6 daily.  The series also airs in Australia (ABC1, ABC2), the UK (Channel 5’s Milkshake), and in Finland (MTV3)

PBS Kids is inviting Mister Rogers fans young and old are invited to vote for their favorite episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood at .  Once at the site you can choose from seven Mister Rogers episodes, with the winning episode to broadcast on air and online on Saturday, March 20 (check local listings), as part of the third annual Won’t You Be My Neighbor? Day, which celebrates Fred Rogers’ birthday and his world of neighborhoods.  While online fans can also view previously unseen clips, behind the scenes moment and outtakes from the long running preschool series at, as well as share their own photos and stories in the Neighbors of All Ages area at  Additionally, PBS Kids has also recently introduced Mister Rogers’ Make a Journal iPhone/iPod Touch application.

Dolphin Entertainment signs a program sales deal with NRK (Norway) for the live-action series Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide.  Created and executive produced by Scott Fellow, Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide was developed and produced for Nickelodeon, which launched the series in 2003.  The series airs around the world on various broadcasters.

Chorion inks two licensing deals, via its Copyrights’ subsidiary, for the Flower Fairies band in the UK and Japan.  In the UK, Somerbond is launching a new range of apparel in Top Shop, starting with a limited collection of nightwear this month followed by underwear launching in all stores in May 2010.  Copyrights’ Japanese agent, Copyrights Asia, inks a deal with Sumikin Bussan, on behalf of apparel company Onward Kashiyama, to produce a line of Flower Fairies T-shirts for young adult women, which will launch in Forste stores.  Forste is a brand of Onward Kashiyama.  The line launches this month with three high-end T-shirts, followed by three more designs in March, available at 16 stores throughout Japan.  The first Flower Fairies book Flower Fairies of the Spring, by creator/illustrator/author Cicely Mary Barker was published in 1923.

Licensor Turner CN Enterprises is preparing to head to brand Licensing Central and Eastern Europe, which will take place in Budapest on March 8-9, 2010, where it will feature its brands and preview its plans to build its licensing, merchandising and retail business in the region.  Turner CN Enterprises will showcase shows including Ben 10 and Ben 10 Alien Force, with a focus on 10/10/10 (October 10, 2010) for Ben 10 related events across EMEA.


DC Entertainment, established in September 2009 to take the DC Comics library of characters across al media platforms, names its executive management team.  The new senior executive team includes Jim Lee and Dan DiDio, who are named Co-Publishers/DC Comics, and Geoff Johns, who will serve as Chief Creative Officer/DC Entertainment. Additionally, John Rood has been named EVP/Sales, Marketing and Business Development, and Patrick Caldon will serve as EVP/Finance and Administration. Each of these executives will report directly to Diane Nelson, President/DC Entertainment.  DC Entertainment is a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment.

  • Most recently, Lee was Editorial Director, overseeing WildStorm Studios, which he founded and was later acquired by DC Comics, and was also the artist on a range of DC Comics comic books and graphic novels.  Lee also serves as Executive Creative Director for he upcoming DC Universe Online MMOG from Sony Online Entertainment.  A comic book illustrator/creator/publisher Lee began his career at Marvel Comics.  He created WildCats and Gen 13, comic books that were adapted as animated series that aired on CBS Saturday morning programming block.  Lee also co-founded Image Comics.
  • DiDio was most recently SVP and Executive Editor, DC Universe, heading the editorial department for the DC Universe imprint.  He was previously with Mainframe Entertainment where he eventually served as SVP/Creative Affairs for its TV properties.  Prior to that he was Executive Director/Children’s Programming, ABC.
  • Johns is a well-known comic book writer, having worked on a range of DC titles.  He also worked and wrote comics with movie director Richard Donner.  Additionally, Johns has written and produced episodes of Smallville, Robot Chicken and Titan Maximum, as well as the story of the DC Universe Online MMOG.
  • Rood re-joins Warner Bros. from Disney ABC Television Group where he worked for the last decade, most recently as SVP/Marketing, ABC Family.  He previously worked for six years at Warner Bros. Consumer Products.
  • Caldon has been with DC Comics for 25 years, most recently serving as EVP/Finance and Operations of DC Comics and MAD Magazine.  Prior to joining DC Comics, he worked in corporate accounting at Warner Communications and as SVP and CFO of the Cosmos soccer team (owned by Warner Communications at the time).

Digital Rights Group (DRG) ups Patrick Roberts to SVP/International Sales.  Roberts, who had been VP, officially begins his new role in March.  He takes over the position over the SVP reins from veteran Christina Willoughby who leaves the company at the end of this month.  Roberts previously served as Sr. Sales Executive at Channel 4 International, joining DRG when it acquired Channel 4 International in 2007.


Nickelodeon‘s premiere of The Penguins of Madagascar President’s Day special, Dr. Blowhole’s Revenge, featuring guest star Neil Patrick Harris, on Monday, February 15 at 8p earned the top spot of the night on basic cable among Total Viewers 2+ (4.6 million) up by +19% versus last year, and across broadcast and basic cable with K2-11 (2.9 million) and K6-11 (2.1 million) an increase of +34% and +167% respectively.
