Cynopsis: Sports
12.06.13

Good morning. It’s Friday, December 6, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

SiriusXM and the NBA are launching an exclusive league channel that will tip off on Monday, December 9, and is designed to cover the league “24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and bring fans closer to the game.” SiriusXM NBA Radio will live on Channel 217 and feature exclusive interviews throughout the day including NBA Commissioner David Stern, NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving, and more. In addition, the channel will offer fans more than 14 live NBA games each week as well as a daily schedule of NBA-focused news and talk from the likes of Kenny Smith and Steve Kerr; Stacey King; Lionel Hollins; Mike Dunleavy, Sr., and Sam Mitchell; Nancy Lieberman; and Mateen Cleaves.

On the Air

FOX Sports announced a new executive management structure, handing David Nathanson and Bill Wanger with new responsibilities. Nathanson was named General Manager & Chief Operating Officer, FOX Sports 1 and FOX Sports 2, a newly created position, while Wanger will now serve as Executive Vice President, Programming, Research & Content Strategy. Reporting to Nathanson, as the senior management team guiding both national sports channels, are Scott Ackerson, who becomes Executive Vice President, News; George Greenberg, whose title is now Executive Vice President, Content Integration & Presentation; and Michael Bloom, who remains FOX Sports’ Senior Vice President, Original Programming.

NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France offered a state of the union for the organization in Las Vegas, telling reporters that its upcoming deal with NBC could be a game-changer. “Right away, we’re going to get a lot more attention simply because it’s their focus,” he said. “They’re going to use the assets within the (NBC) Universal platform, the E Channel, things that we don’t think about every day, to cross-promote day in and day out. And when you create interest levels that hopefully go up, we match that with even better racing than we have today, (that’s) our goal.”

NBA TV added former NBA executive and head coach Stu Jackson to its ranks, where he will serve as a contributor on league-related topics including rules clarifications, discipline, and general league operations. His first in-studio appearance is slated to take place on NBA GameTime on Friday, Dec. 13. He will also contribute across NBA Digital’s portfolio, including answering questions from fans via Twitter  @StuJackson32 – and providing insights on NBA.com. His first Twitter chat will be Friday, Dec. 6.

Deportes Telemundo announced that Honduran presenter Ana Jurka was joining the on-air team as reporter and co-host for a number of network properties, including current events segments featured on Futbol Estelar and Barclays Premier League on Telemundo, mun2 as well as the brand’s digital platform. Before joining Deportes Telemundo, Ana was a sportscaster at Telemundo Orlando.

With the 2013 MLB Winter Meetings gearing up next week, MLB Network is prepping special editions of Hot Stove, Intentional Talk, Inside MLB and MLB Tonight, starting Sunday, December 8 at 8p. MLB Network will also produce an on-screen social media ticker that will display the latest news throughout the league. In addition, MLB Network will also televise the 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame Expansion Era election results announcement on Monday, December 9 live at 10a.

Around the dial, ESPN’s coverage of the 2013 Baseball Winter Meetings will see hourly SportsCenter coverage from the on-site Baseball Tonight set starting at 9a on Monday. In addition, ESPN will air Baseball Tonight five times daily, including three shows on ESPN.com, plus a 6p telecast on ESPNEWS and a final wrap-up show on ESPN2 after midnight.

CBS Sports’ Week 13 national doubleheader coverage of the NFL on CBS on Sunday, anchored by Denver/Kansas City, drew a preliminary national household rating/share of 16.7/29, up 20%, over last year’s 13.9/24 to tie Denver/Dallas as the highest rated NFL telecast on any network this season, according to Nielsen.

The Pac-12 Networks are gearing up for Championship Week with a bevy of programming surrounding the game, including the Pac-12 Football Championship Coaches Press Conference today, as well as the Pac-12 Championship Pregame Show on Saturday featuring host Mike Yam and analysts Rick Neuheisel and Curtis Conway. On Sunday, the platform will feature Pac-12 Playbook: Bowl Selection Special at 6p Pacific. Pac-12 Networks also programmed other NCAA postseason coverage this week with live coverage of the 1stand 2nd round volleyball matchups, as well as quarterfinal action from the men’s soccer tournament.

Saturday’s Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale main card ranked as the second most watched UFC show on Fox Sports 1, according to MMA Torch, as well as the sixth most watched program ever on the young network. The telecast averaged 1,129,000 viewers.

Lindsey Vonn’s return to racing this weekend can be seen on Universal Sports, which is carrying all of this weekend’s alpine races live. The action starts today at 2p. Over the course of the weekend, the network will offer more than 20 hours of winter sports heading into Sochi including alpine skiing, figure skating, bobsled and skeleton.

Univision Deportes announced plans for Saturday’s 18th annual MLS Cup pitting Sporting Kansas City and Real Salt Lake. Coverage begins with Futbol Central at 3p, followed by the match at 4p hosted by sports anchors Jorge Perez Navarro and Diego Balado, with special reporting by Jaime Motta.

The Coca-Cola Company was honored with the 2013 NASCAR Marketing Achievement Award at the NASCAR NMPA Myers Brothers Awards Luncheon. The honor makes Coca-Cola the first three-time recipient of the award. “Over the course of our 15-year relationship Coca-Cola has become one of the most recognized brands in our sport,” said Jim O’Connell, NASCAR chief sales officer. “Once again Coca-Cola raised the bar by creating innovative activation and an integrated marketing approach to engage with millions of NASCAR fans, embodying the spirit of the award.” This year, Coca-Cola launched a series of brand spots dubbed, “Coca-Cola Racing Family Road Trip,” featuring NASCAR stars Tony Stewart, Danica Patrick, Greg Biffle, Ryan Newman, Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano that premiered during the Daytona 500 and mirrored storylines that were playing out on the track throughout the season.

Meanwhile, NASCAR officials also confirmed that it was once again booking a return engagement to Las Vegas, extending the annual Champion’s Week slate of events through 2017. The organization is currently in its fifth straight year in the city.
The USOC is partnering up with Sesame Workshop as an official affiliate of Team USA through the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
