Good morning. It’s Friday, August 9, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
FOX Sports continued its shopping spree, inking a deal with the Jockey Club to bring horse racing to FOX via a multi-year agreement. The new partnership will see graded stakes races hit FOX Sports 1 starting Sunday, February 9, 2014 with a package that includes up to 10 telecasts per year with each episode offering two top stakes races. The deal includes international as well as Spanish-language rights, including the ability to air races on FOX Deportes. The race series will hit racetracks that include Mar, Gulfstream Park, Keeneland, Santa Anita Park and Woodbine as well as the race tracks of the New York Racing Association.
NBC Sports Group unveiled channel assignments for the first three weeks of its coverage of the Premier League, which kicks off Saturday, August 17 at 7a on NBC Sports Network with a Liverpool/Stoke City matchup. In that span, NBC and NBC Sports Network will televise 17 Premier League matches with the rest made available on Premier League Extra Time, the bonus television package available to MVPDs for customers who receive NBC Sports Network. Lead play-by-play voice Arlo White will team up with Lee Dixon to call the 12:30p Saturday matches on NBC in the first three weeks, including Swansea/Manchester United on Aug. 17; Aston Villa/Liverpool on Aug. 24; and Crystal Palace/Sunderland on Aug. 31. White will also pair with Graeme Le Saux to call two Sunday matches and one Monday game on NBC Sports Network in the first three weeks Chelsea/Hull City at 11:00a on Aug. 18; Manchester United/Chelsea at 3p on Aug. 26; and Liverpool/Manchester United at 8:30a on Sept. 1.
NBC’s sister channels Telemundo and mun2 will also feature more than 75 Premier League matches this season, with the action starting on mun2 on Saturday at 9:55a with Arsenal/Aston Villa, followed by Swansea/Manchester United at 12:25p. Andres Cantor offers play-by-play alongside Sammy Sadovnik to start the upcoming season.
Speaking of Telemundo, Deportes Telemundo unveiled a new state-of-the art studio for all of its properties hosting flagship series such as Titulares Telemundo and Titulares y Mas as well as live broadcasts of Mexican soccer, World Cup qualifiers and the upcoming Barclays Premier League.
ESPN and the Big 12 Conference announced its 2014 men’s college basketball television schedule for the ESPN family tree, with ESPN and ESPN2 averaging three Big 12 games a week. Overall, the networks will combine to televise 83 conference games in addition to non-conference play. Conference action tips off on Saturday, Jan. 4, with three games beginning with Oklahoma State/Kansas State at noon on ESPNU, Iowa State/Texas Tech at 1:30p on the Big 12 Network and ESPN3, and West Virginia/TCU at 4p on the Big 12 Network and ESPN3.
Meanwhile, FOX laid out special plans for its own college basketball schedule, announcing a Super Saturday Hoops doubleheader on FS1 on Saturday, Feb. 1, featuring Marquette/St. John’s at 12:30p and Michigan State/Georgetown 3p live from legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City on the eve of Super Bowl XLVIII.
ESPN will present a new one-hour documentary film in RGIII: The Will to Win, on Aug. 27 at 7p. The special is produced by NFL Films and Gatorade Productions about Washington Redskins quarterback and 2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III and focuses on Griffin’s journey to return to the field for the 2013 NFL season.
On Monday at 7p, ESPN is offering SportsCenter Special: NFL Face to Face with Hannah Storm, a one-hour special of long-form interviews hosted by Hannah Storm. Monday’s special showcases Vernon Davis, Clay Matthews, J.J. Watt and Russell Wilson and marks the sixth of Storm’s Face to Face series on the network.
ESPN Radio will debut The Paul Finebaum Show on a national stage on Monday at 2p. The four-hour daily program, will showcase Finebaum’s opinions and knowledge of the SEC as well as his interaction with his passionate callers.

Ahead of the new NFL season, the league is hitting up Marie Claire in a move to drive up interest from female viewers. The September issue features a 16-page insert dubbed “The Savvy Girl’s Guide to Football” that features six ad pages for the NFL’s women’s apparel line. According to Ad Age, the league is also turning to seven other women’s magazines, including Vogue, Cosmopolitan and Us Weekly as part of its campaign.
NCAA President Mark Emmert announced that the organization was “hypocritical” in selling player jerseys on its site and would pull ShopNCAASports.com immediately. The move comes two days after ESPN’s Jay Bilas called out the organization by stating that a search engine showed jerseys for sale merely by typing in a player’s name.
JELL-O is taking college football to a new place with the release of College JELL-O molds. The items will hit retail shelves for four IMG College partner schools, shaped like Arkansas’ Hog, Florida’s Gator, Texas’ Horns, and the Michigan “M.”
ONE World Sports announced that the hip-hop single “Big Lights” by Sammy Adams has been selected to serve as the network’s theme song.

Just before the new season, the Premier League has a new technology to lean on to determine the fate of controversial goals. British company Hawk-Eye developed the Goal Decision System that will use camera-based tech to give referees a ruling within a second with their watch buzzing to tell them if a ball has gone in the goal.
Brandon Howell has been promoted to Vice President and General Sales Manager of the four FOX Sports regional networks based in Atlanta: FOX Sports South, FOX Sports Carolinas, FOX Sports Tennessee, and SportSouth. Howell joined the organization in 2000 as an Account Executive with Home Team Sports.
