Good morning. It’s Friday, August 23, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Major League Baseball Productions is collaborating with FOX Sports to launch a new series dubbed Mission October. The eight-part series will debut on Monday at 7:30p on Fox Sports 1, and feature an inside look behind the scenes with a specific team fighting to reach the Postseason and win the World Series, while also featuring “the quickest turnaround of any show MLB Productions has ever created.” Camera crews will follow team members and personnel over the course of a weekend series before running on Monday evenings each week. Episode one will showcase the Pittsburgh Pirates facing off against the San Francisco Giants in an effort to reach the Postseason for the first time in 21 years. The first seven episodes will be a half hour in length while the final episode will be one hour in length and air on the Monday following the conclusion of the World Series.

On the Air

YES Network is throwing in with Manchester City FC, inking a multi-year agreement with the football club to carry Manchester City games on tape delay. The first match televised by YES was last night against Newcastle United, marking City’s first match of the 2013-14 EPL season. The deal will also see YES televise the CityLife and Inside City magazine shows which give Manchester City fans intimate behind-the-scenes insights in to the club and its players off the pitch, while keeping fans abreast of the latest team news.

ESPN’s 2013-14 Atlantic Coast Conference men’s college basketball regular-season schedule is in place, with 130 conference games lined up across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3 marking the most ACC conference-controlled games ever on the networks. In addition to the Big Monday schedule, ACC games will also run as part of the weekly ACC Sunday Night Basketball franchise on ESPNU and across networks on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the season. As part of the schedule, ESPN or ESPN2 will televise both matchups between Duke and North Carolina and all three games Syracuse will play against Duke and North Carolina. The action begins on Dec. 8 at 12:30p with Virginia Tech/Miami on ESPNU.

IndyCar is looking to boost its international presence by 2015 with a series of off-season races around the world that could launch a winter championship, according to Autosport. The report states that European group World Series Operations put forward plans for a winter series under the IndyCar Global Challenge banner and is proposing a five-event schedule that begins at the end of next year.

BTN recently completed a survey to find out how and where fans like to watch college football with most Americans preferring to view the action via the big screen at home (62%), where they can enjoy spending time with their friends. In addition, the survey found superstitious fans like to do more than just watch – 53% say they wear certain clothes or shoes to help their favorite team beat their opponents while 40% felt looking away from the screen sometimes helped their team win. 31% of superstitious fans are 18-24 while that number drops down to 10% by the time fans reach their 60’s. BTN Kickoff Week begins at 6p on Monday, Aug. 26, with #BTNLive, airing daily Monday through Friday and also simulcast on FOX Sports Radio.

Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic will carry 30 combined Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) games as part of its 2013 college football schedule, beginning Aug. 31 with Maryland’s season opener against Florida International on Aug. 31 at 12:30p. Overall, 17 ACC games are on tap while 13 CAA games will run with appearances by the likes of local schools William & Mary, Richmond, James Madison, Delaware and Towson.

On the other side of the country, Comcast SportsNet Northwest announced expanded Ducks, Beavers and Pac-12 football coverage, with three new, weekly Ducks and Beavers football-focused shows: #DucksFootball, #BeaversFootball (launching Aug. 30) and Ducks Postgame Live (Aug. 31).

Ricky Williams has been signed to join LHN as an analyst during pre-game, halftime and post-game coverage of the 2013 football season. Williams will join LHN’s Lowell Galindo and Ahmad Brooks during home games for Texas GameDay and Texas GameDay Final Powered by Chevy Silverado. Also joining the team this fall is former University of Georgia quarterback David Greene.

The last documentary in ESPN Films’ and espnW’s Nine for IX series, Branded, is set to run on Tuesday, Aug. 27 at 8p on ESPN. The film explores “the double standard placed on female athletes to be the best players on the field and the sexiest off of it” and explores whether sex appeal will always override achievement. Interviews include Mary Lou Retton, Chris Evert, Lolo Jones and Gabby Reece.

Sponsorship & Promotion

The Atlantic 10 Conference locked in a multimedia rights agreement with IMG College that covers the league’s digital platforms, sponsorship rights to the league’s 21 championships, corporate sponsorships, at-event promotions, licensing and publications. Through the deal, IMG College will develop A-10 sponsorship opportunities, at the corporate partner level and at conference championships, including the Men’s Basketball Championship and the A-10 Women’s Basketball Championship. The partnership will also secure sponsorship for the league’s digital assets, including the conference’s live streamed events and the league website.

Slots for the Super Bowl are almost gone. FOX Sports reports that ad inventory is already 85% sold according to USA Today, and will hit 90% before the start of the NFL season. The report states that some of the game’s 30-second slots are passing $4 million for the New York game.

Dial Global entered an alliance with three-time ACM nominated band The Lost Trailers, which recorded new theme music for Dial Global Sports’ Sunday Night Football program. The music will be a modified version of their single It’s Goin’ Down Tonight featuring football highlights, sound bites and customized lyrics.

Digital & Technology

CBS Interactive and IMG College locked in a three-year renewal of their agreement for the production and management of the official athletic sites of 22 of IMG’s partner schools. CBS Interactive Advanced Media, which produces more than 150 official athletic sites for premium collegiate athletic brands, will power the athletic sites of the 22 schools. CBS Interactive Advanced Media will develop, host and assist in the monetization of each school’s official athletic website across all digital platforms and includes the rights to stream live audio and video products as well as auction, photo, DVD, memorabilia, and advertising rights, and official online e-commerce stores for select schools.

Harmonic announced that FOX Broadcasting Corporation is updating the company’s entire playout infrastructure at its Los Angeles broadcast center with a Harmonic solution built on Spectrum Channel Port branded channel playout. FOX made the shift in preparation for its new FOX Sports 1 Network, which launched on Aug. 17.
