Cynopsis: Sports
08/17/12

Good morning. It’s Friday, August 17, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

A long-awaited standoff is over. NFL Network and Cablevision-the largest TV provider in the nation’s top media market-reached a multi-year agreement for carriage of NFL Network and the NFL RedZone channel on the MSO. NFL Network makes its debut in Cablevision homes starting today on channel 150 for customers who subscribe to iO Preferred, iO Silver, iO Gold or the iO Sports & Entertainment Pak. NFL RedZone, which airs on Sundays throughout the regular season, will now be offered in both standard-definition and HD on channel 151 as part of the iO Sports & Entertainment Pak.

On the Air

The FCC and Tennis Channel filed opposition to Comcast’s stay petition with the U.S. Court of Appeals, with Comcast now having until Tuesday to file a reply. Of course, the clock is officially ticking for Comcast to comply with the FCC’s decision to move Tennis Channel to the same tier as Golf Channel and NBC Sports Network. Comcast has claimed that the FCC decision was unconstitutional and is suing over the ruling.

CBS Sports Radio announced that Boomer Esiason will be tapped to play a key role in the network’s programming when it launches next month on at least 90 stations nationwide. Esiason will deliver commentary and updates on the current headlines during the CBS SPORTS MINUTE as well as offer insight and opinion as CBS Sports Radio’s Senior NFL Analyst. The former quarterback will be heard weekday mornings near the top of the hour from 6-10a on the stations, including WFAN in New York, WSCR in Chicago, KNBR in San Francisco and WIP-FM in Philadelphia.

CBS Sports Network will bring a new look to the fall’s weekly college football programming, with shows now originating from the channel’s newly upgraded 7,500 square-foot New York City studio based at Chelsea Piers. Inside College Football, The Tony Barnhart Show, Tackling the Trends and Lemming Report will all return to the lineup as well the channel’s SEC coverage which will be bolstered with the addition of This Week in SEC Football on Fridays at 7p. On Sundays, CBS Sports Network will feature Fantasy Football Today at 11a.

Mariah Carey and No Doubt are set to perform at the NFL’s first game of the season, where they will perform from Rockefeller Plaza before the Giants/Cowboys game at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The hourlong pregame show will air at 7:30p on NBC.

ESPN2’s Big Monday slate of games, which features top teams in Division I women’s basketball, will showcase 10 games over seven consecutive weeks this season including three doubleheaders in February. Games tip off on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, Jan 21, at 7p with a battle between Duke and Connecticut.  All 13 teams on the schedule are 2012 NCAA Championship participants, including three Final Four teams in Baylor, Connecticut and Notre Dame.

ESPN also announced an early preseason NBA doubleheader pitting the Hornets/Heat followed by Nuggets/Suns on Friday, October 26 beginning at 8p.

MLB Network’s new series My MLB Life debuts on Saturday at 6:30p. The four-part series, from MLB Productions, consists of 30-minute episodes that profile the “work hard, live well, give back” mentality of players beginning with Matt Kemp in the premiere episode. Other episodes over the following three weeks will feature Torii Hunter, CC Sabathia and Ryan Zimmerman.

MLB owners approved the sale of the San Diego Padres to a group that includes ex-Dodger owner Peter O’Malley and family as well as golf’s Phil Mickelson. The $800 million deal was formally given the green light at the MLB owners meeting in Denver on Thursday. The purchase includes the team as well as minority stakes in Petco Park and the Fox Sports San Diego cable channel.

MSG Networks and ESPN New York 98.7FM agreed to a multi-year extension that will keep the station as the radio broadcast home of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers. The deal includes full pre- and post-game coverage for both teams, as well as a continuation of a multi-tiered cross-promotional effort between The Madison Square Garden Company and the outlet.

Starting Monday at 7:30p, MSG will dive into the world of the Giants heading into the NFL season with three consecutive nights of Live from Giants Training Camp, followed by an all-new Giants Chronicles with Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning on Thursday night as well as a Giants Chronicles mini-marathon set for Friday night before the defending Super Bowl Champions take on the Bears in their second preseason game.

The Vikings announced that the team will take advantage of new NFL blackout rules, and will lower its percentage of tickets that must be sold to ensure local television carriage. The team will now reduce its ticket manifest to 90% capacity, for a reduction of approximately 6,000 seats.

MLB Network was the only one to get a hit out of Seattle Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez’s perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday. The channel reports that average viewership increased 71% after cutting live to the conclusion of the game from 5:30 to 6:15p that evening.

New international sports channel beIN SPORT locked in a carriage deal with DISH Network. The agreement will make the network available on DISH’s America’s Top 250 (AT250) in English and on DISHLatino packages as beIN SPORT E, a Spanish-language version. In addition to its linear TV network, select beIN SPORT content will be available on DISHOnline.com for DISH TV customers.
