Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, April 19, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Today’s Top Headlines
We’ve got kids news covered for you daily during Upfront season…

Disney Channel heads into production in July on a high-tech, family-friendly version of classic game show Win, Lose or Draw, with Justin Willman of Food Network’s Cupcake Wars set to host. The show will premiere on Disney Channel later this year, executive-produced by Scott St. John (Deal or No Deal) and produced by Summerdale Productions in association with ABC Media Group. Each episode will feature two teams of two kid contestants paired with a Disney star battling it out on the drawing board. Motion control, interactive multi-touch screen displays and graphic technology will give the proceedings a contemporary twist. The original Win, Lose or Draw aired on NBC from 1987-90 and in syndication. Disney has dabbled in these waters before. Its Teen Win, Lose or Draw aired on Disney Channel from 1989-92.

Mega-hot block-building game Minecraft has a new worldwide toys and electronics licensing partner in Jazwares, thanks to a deal struck with game developer and publisher Mojang.

Nickelodeon is playing a shell game. The network this week unleashes its first-ever worldwide mobile app, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rooftop Run, exclusively for iPhone, iPad and iPod. Available in more than 150 countries and eight languages, the app features Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo leaping and fighting their way across the rooftops of New York.

It’s something old, something new for the next batch of Nintendo 3DS, due in late summer through the holidays. In the mix of Super Mario spinoffs and other new titles the game maker will release for its much anticipated handheld console, are a bunch of throwbacks to the Game Boy days: Yoshi’s Island, Donkey Kong Country and The Legend of Zelda. The titles will have a modern twist, thanks to the device’s 3D imagery, which players can adjust with a sliding mechanism. Aside from their 3DS launch, the games will soon launch on Nintendo’s Wii U system, the company said. And in keeping with its retro ’90s gaming vibe, Nintendo will release EarthBound on the Wii U virtual console later this year.

ZeptoLab is prepping the third installment of hit game Cut the Rope. The new incarnation, Cut The Rope: Time Travel, will include new animated shorts featuring the character Om Nom. The original game and sequel have been downloaded 300 million times since initial release in October 2010.

U.K. indie home entertainment label Clear Vision is getting multi-territory rights to the first and second seasons of the Hasbro Studios’ My Little Pony Friendship is Magic in the U.K., France, Spain, Italy, the Nordic countries and the Middle East.

Mattel beat analysts projections with strong first-quarter results, including net income of $38.5 million, or 11 cents a share, which is more than quadruple its $7.8 million income a year earlier. Q1 sales increased 7% to $995.6 million, more than the $986.5 million that had been predicted by analysts. But the real story isn’t the income itself-it’s where the income came from. Not Barbie and the toy maker’s other classic brands, but rather latter-day family members including its Monster High, Disney Princess and American Girl lines. In fact, Barbie sales slid 2%, continuing a decline in sales from Mattel’s biggest franchise that began last year. Other iconic Mattel brands also got bumped out of the sandbox. Hot Wheels sales declined by 3% and Fisher-Price, Mattel’s preschool division, was down 7% in sales. To the shining contrary, in the company’s Other Girls division sales increased 56%, boosted largely from the Monster High line. American Girl sales rose 32%. Mattel is pinning high hopes on its new Max Steel toy franchise, based on the teen hero in the Disney XD series, which it will debut in August.

Clearly, he’s been avoiding the kryptonite. Happy 75th birthday to Superman, who was introduced to the world on April 18, 1938, in the pages of Action Comics #1. Among the nostalgia and Superman fodder coming at fans faster than a speeding bullet this week is a new, in-depth trailer for Warner Bros.’ upcoming movie Man of Steel, starring Russell Crowe, Henry Cavill and Amy Adams.

Awards Season: NCTA will honor several children’s television execs with Vanguard Awards at its ceremony June 12 at the Cable Show in D.C. David Preschlack, EVP, affiliate sales & marketing at Disney & ESPN Networks, will receive the Young Leadership Vanguard… Nickelodeon received six nominations for the 2013 NAMIC Vision Awards. The network, whose nods include TeenNick and a joint Nick-NFL Nomination, ties for the second-most nominations with TV One and HBO.

Let’s face it, the way to just about all of our hearts is through our stomachs. So we’re particularly jazzed about Publications International Ltd.’s new iCookbook 3.1 app, a culinary collaboration with Sesame Workshop that packs a hearty collection of recipes for kids and parents–Sesame Street’s Silly Snacks. Available for iOS devices for $2.99, the app’s Sesame section features 20 recipes like Oscar’s SCRAM-bled Egg and Zucchini Pie and Big Bird’s Little Nests. There are tips about healthy snacking, fun facts and cooking steps designed just for kids. Best of all, this app gives parents and kids a great excuse to get messy together in the kitchen.
