Good morning. It's Tuesday, April 24, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
FOX Sports Media Group entered a multi-year, multi-media agreement with Golden Boy Promotions to provide live boxing content in the US and internationally. Domestically, Golden Boy fights will be carried on FOX Deportes, on FOX Sports regional networks, and FUEL TV where one originally produced boxing event per month will air live. In addition, live boxing events from cities throughout Mexico will be also carried on FOX Deportes. The first U.S. event is scheduled for Friday, May 4at 11p with a bout featuring former World Champion Daniel Ponce De Leon of Cuauhtemoc and Juarez's Eduardo "El Chucky" Lazcano in the main event for the vacant WBC USNBC Super Featherweight title.
Internationally, FOX's networks will take exclusive rights to FOX's U.S.-produced fights throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa and Europe and to fight cards originating in Mexico throughout most of South America, the Caribbean and Europe. In addition, FOX's networks have exclusive rights to Golden Boy's Solo Boxeo series in Mexico and Central America, while FOX Sports Brazil has rights to select Golden Boy Promotions premier events.
On the Air
Two of the biggest franchises squaring off in the semifinal round delivered record ratings for FX. The Chelsea FC/ FC Barcelona game last Wednesday drew an audience of 592,000 viewers (and over a million counting FOX Deportes), according to Nielsen, a network-record for soccer, and likely scoring as the most-watched UEFA Champions League non-final match ever. FX's audience was up 21% compared to last year's first semifinal. Meanwhile, the other semifinal on Tuesday on FOX Soccer scored 308,000 viewers, up 20%. Both games were also broadcast on FOX Deportes.
What does it take to cut away from a Yankees comeback against the Red Sox? A perfect game. FOX Saturday Baseball helped generate a 2.7/6 this weekend for the Yankees/Red Sox and White Sox/Mariners telecasts. In spite of a historic comeback by the Yankees, White Sox pitcher Phil Humber's perfect game saw the channel swap out the rivalry game (which was airing in most of the country) to showcase the final three outs of Humber's efforts. Overall, Saturday's 2.7/6 is up 59% over last year's 1.7/4 and peaked at a 3.2/8 when the network cut away to the historic event. Through three weeks, FOX Saturday Baseball is averaging a 2.6/6 in the metered markets, up 8% over last year's 2.4/6.
NBC's coverage of the Bruins' overtime win against the Capitals drew the highest NHL playoff overnight rating outside of the Stanley Cup Final in 14 years, with a 2.5 in the overnight rating, according to Nielsen.
Universal Sports Network and Unipublic locked in a multiyear renewal for cycling's Vuelta a Espana through2016. The four-year agreement includes television, Internet and mobile rights across the United States and Canada.
ESPN's Outside the Lines has a huge break that the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of Louisiana is investigating New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis for using an electronic device located in his Superdome suite that had been secretly re-wired to allow him to eavesdrop on visiting coaches for nearly three NFL seasons. Loomis already is looking at an eight-game suspension from the NFL for his role in the bounty scandal. If proven, the allegations could be a violation not only of NFL rules but federal laws as well.
MLB Network is bringing today's Yankees/Rangers to national audiences. The game will feature Hiroki Kuroda vs. Yu Darvish on the mount and air nationally on the channel at 8p.
USA Track and Field named Max Siegel to serve as CEO of the organization. Siegel will become the fourth CEO in the organization's history when he assumes his duties on May 1 as part of a two-year contract. He previously served as President of Global Operations at Dale Earnhardt Inc.
The NBA Development League announced that it will bring back the Boost Mobile NBA D-League National Tryouts, with events taking place in LA on May 12, Chicago on June 2, New York on June 16 and Houston on June 17. The one-day tryouts will see several hundred athletes participate across the four cities for a chance to gain eligibility for November's NBA D-League Draft.

USA Basketball and The Jeep brand are entering a partnership that will make Jeep Wrangler the "Official Vehicle of USA Basketball," supporting both the men's and women's national teams. The brand will subsequently launch a full advertising and marketing campaign beginning Saturday, April 28. In addition, the company named Chris Paul as its spokesman for this partnership.
The Western & Southern Open extended its deal with the Western & Southern Financial Group for three more years to keep the company as title sponsor of the tennis tournament through 2014. The Western & Southern Financial Group has been the tournament's title sponsor since 2002.
ESPN is launching a social media promotion designed to have a College GameDay spot filmed on a TBD campus this summer. Through May 2, fans can vote once per day for their university at gamedayvote.com or using the Facebook app at facebook.com/collegegameday. More than 120 FBS football programs will be included in the promotion.
The Cleveland Indians are unlocking a new Indians Social Suite in their stadium dubbed as "the first social media-only space in professional sports," according to ESPN. The suite will offer fans the opportunity to chat about the Tribe offline with other attendees, as well as with friends and followers only directly from a Wi-Fi-enabled suite that is placed at Progressive Field.
