Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 12, 2014, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Welcome to Leadership Lessons, the column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the media world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys. Today, meet Jeff Collins, President of Collins Avenue. In addition, Collins serves as Executive Producer on the Lifetime series Dance Moms and is on-air host of the franchise’s reunion shows.
What was your first leadership position and what lessons did you learn from it?
I was the supervising producer on a late night comedy show, and there were a couple of producers under me who were "must-hires.” Without fully considering the ramifications, I let them know they were not pulling their weight, which was the case.  When season two rolled around, I wasn’t asked back and later learned that one of them was well-connected, through his wife, to a major program buyer in town who “suggested” to the head of our company that I be replaced. Because I didn’t pay attention to the politics at play, I lost that position, while the two producers remained. It was a humbling experience and one that taught me to carefully consider each situation from all angles before taking action.
What’s the most important part of managing a staff?
Making sure that I’m not micromanaging them and even more, making sure they’re not micromanaging their direct reports. I strive to create a culture of creativity with a diverse group of people who come from all walks of life, and contribute different points of view. A culture that breeds and fosters creativity is the spark plug of a production company.
Tell us about a difficult management problem and what you did to overcome it.
There’s a certain type of producer who likes to divide and conquer. They come into your shop and immediately start pitting people against each other and stirring the pot. There’s also a certain type of person in our industry who trades in gossip — it’s like a commodity. I used to be oblivious to that, but now I pay much more attention when one of these types lands under my roof. We’ve had good luck "correcting their behavior" if we catch them quickly and make sure they understand that these kinds of politics won’t be tolerated.
What do you look for when interviewing job candidates?
I trust my gut instincts. I’m very much in tune with a person’s character so if I get nervous inside when I’m interviewing someone, I know there’s something wrong. Whenever I’ve ignored that feeling, I’m always sorry later. People who are coming into the unscripted business at high levels need to have it all — charm, talent and the ability to sell others on their ideas. We’re all salespeople, at the end of the day.
