Cynopsis: Multi-Cultural & International Edition
11/27/06

Good Morning.  It's Monday, November 27, 2006, and this is your first early morning Multi-Cultural briefing.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving meals on Thursday (and made it to the gym by Saturday!).

HISPANIC MARKET:

Get your votes in … Fox Pan American Sports announced the finalists for the 4th Annual Premios Fox Sports presented by DHL.  Winners in three categories will be voted on exclusively by fans via text messaging, while 14 additional awards were voted on by an expert panel of judges and will be crowned during the official Premios Fox Sports awards ceremony to be held and taped on December 14 in Miami Beach.  Fans can vote for the Best Goal of Copa Toyota Libertadores, Best Goal of Copa Nissan Sudamericana, and Best Goal of Recopa, each representing one of the most important club level soccer tournaments in Latin America.  The award ceremony will air on Fox Sports en Espanol and throughout the Spanish-speaking Americas on Fox Sports Latin America on December 17 at 9p.

LATAM MARKET:

Mexico's Raul Velasco, host of the long running and popular Siempre en Domingo variety show, passed away yesterday at the age of 73 in Acapulco.  The 1969-1998 show on Televisa was often compared to The Ed Sullivan Show and brought many of Mexico's pop stars into the limelight.  Televisa stated on its website that Raul died with his family by his side at home after struggling against several different illnesses.  In a letter to Raul's wife, Dorle Klokow, Mexican President Vicente Fox called him "a founder of entertainment journalism [who] leaves us a particularly memorable story of the happiness and entertainment that he knew how to communicate."

Nielsen EDI and Variety's Top 10 Mexican Box Office Estimates for the week of November 17-23, 2006 will be updated as soon as they become available.

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

In a story unusual even for a soap opera, ABC's All My Children will introduce a transgender character who is beginning to make the transition from a man into a woman.  The character, a flamboyant rock star known as Zarf, kisses the lesbian character Bianca and much drama ensues with the storyline beginning this Thursday.   The soap opera brought in the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) organization and several transgenders to consult on building the Zarf character. Jeffrey Carlson will play the part.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

Turner Broadcasting System Europe Ltd will launch Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies channels in Germany on December 5, 2006.  Both channels will be available 24/7 and feature dubbed programming.  In the German market Cartoon Network and TCM can be seen in via the 'tividi HOME' and 'tividi FAMILY' on ish and iesy, as well as the KOMPLET arena plus the tividi' satellite platform tividi Sat and through Eutelsat KabelKiosk's 'tividi FAMILY' entertainment package. The Cartoon Network program can also be received through IPTV with Alice homeTV.  Additional platform partners are to be announced soon.  Turner launched Boomerang channel in Germany this past June 2006.

Attention shoppers! Cynopsis has broadened its portfolio by teaming with CABLEready to launch a new subscriber-based website for programmers and producers alike: Cable

Universal Pictures Australasia and ReelTime Media Ltd are partnering up to launch a major movie download-to-own (DTO) service in the international market which includes secure burn technology. The deal also marks the first major movie DTO service in Australia and New Zealand, releasing movies day-and-date with retail DVD, via its online entertainment portal,
www.reeltime.tv .  In an international first, from November 29, consumers with high speed broadband connection will be able to download a wide selection of Universal movies and content for permanent ownership via a 3-copy secure burn DTO model. By logging onto www.reeltime.tv consumers can access two Windows Media files, downloadable to PC/laptop and a portable device (compatible with Windows Play4Sure technology) and a third digital file that allows the movie to be securely and legitimately burned to DVD, containing full DVD functionality.  From the launch date, consumers will be able to choose from an initial selection of 35 Universal titles, led by Miami Vice which will be available day and date with the DVD retail release.

Heroes is to be screened on BBC TWO next year. This epic drama, chronicling the lives of ordinary people who discover they possess extraordinary powers, has been licensed by the BBC from NBC Universal International Television Distribution.

Strix Television has closed several deals in the U.S., with three options signed on My Best Friend, Ruth66 and Paradise Lost.  Strix also signed a license deal with Spanish broadcaster TV3 on My Best Friend, and a license and an option deal for action-game show format Phone Booth on the Latin American market.  The Ruth 66 format is about a group of elderly but quite alert ladies and gentlemen who get a unique opportunity to experience the ultimate road trip while Paradise Lost delves into social awareness.

Sony Pictures TV International has picked up the licensing rights to South Korea-based CJ Media's upcoming drama series for broadcast and digital content in Asia, excluding China, Japan and South Korea. The 16-episode Hyena series will be the first distributed by SPTI following the new agreement.  It focuses on four young men and their search for love.

The CTV Broadband Network has inked a Canadian broadband rights agreement with Warner Bros. International Television to stream Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.  CTV also picked up The O.C. and Smith. Ad-supported full-length episodes of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and The O.C. will stream on-demand at The CTV Broadband Network (at CTV.ca) immediately following their broadcast premieres on CTV.  Broadband scheduling details for the abbreviated 7-episode season of Smith will be announced soon.  The agreement represents the first multi-program broadband deal between any Canadian broadcaster and a major U.S studio.

CTV Inc. has also made another deal but this time in the opposite direction.  The Canadian company sold its Corner Gas sitcom to Superstation WGN.  The U.S. network picked up four seasons (88 eps) under the 2-year agreement for airing in 2007.  Although the price paid was not announced, CTV did mention that they would split the spoils with Corner Gas' producers, Prairie Pants Productions.  The comedy series focuses on a fictional prairie town called Dog River, Saskatchewan.

JumpTV Inc. and GloboSat Entertainment LLC signed an exclusive Internet-broadcast agreement covering three Hindi channels on JumpTV's online television platform in certain areas.  The deal covers Hindi general entertainment channel Sahara One TV, Indian news channel Sahara Samay, and Hindi movie channel Sahara Filmy.

Color Chips, an India based animation studio, has entered into a deal with Australia's Albert Tross Productions.  Under the pact Color Chips will serve as the animation studio as well as providing creative services for the new animated series Tales of Tross (26 episodes).  Color Chips will also work on the development of interactive games and other types of licensed products.

The 3D animated series Iron Kid has premiered on Jetix in Spain, where it airs daily at 7:55a and on weekends at 9:25a. Iron Kid is co-produced by BRB Internacional, Screen 21, DesignStorm, Daiwon, Manga Entertainment and TVE.  The series follows the adventures of Marty, a boy who lives in the future and inadvertently finds the "Iron Fist," which gives him mysterious powers and puts him at the head of a century long battle between good and evil.  The series has already bowed on KBS (Korea) and Jetix (France).  The Iron Fist series website can be found at
www.ironkid.tv .

Taffy Entertainment recently completed raft of deals for its animated series including: Fantastic Four series, based on the Marvel property, which was acquired by NTV7 (Malaysia) as well as TV12 (Singapore).  TV12 has picked up the rights to SamSam, a new 3D animated series based on a comic book and produced by Bayard Jeunesse Animation in HD, and ToddWorld.  The rights to SamSam has also been picked up by Yoyo channel (Taiwan) and C4U (Korea).  C4U also pre-bought the CGI animation series Dive Olly Dive! and in Indonesia PT Cintra has acquired all three seasons of Code Lyoko.  Additionally, a fourth season of Code Lyoko is currently under way.  Taffy also inked a co-production pact with Korean broadcaster EBS and France 5 for Lamimila, a new preschool series produced by MoonScoop and Characterplan.

As promised, here is the remainder of MTV Networks International's global study findings. The Wellbeing Study took six months to complete and encompassed 5,200 interviews with K8-15 and A16-34 in 14 countries (Argentina, Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Sweden, the UK and the U.S).
Family and friends
  • Developed countries feel they are getting more support from friends than they are from families. Conversely, developing countries feel they are getting more support from family than from friends.
  • 79% of kids around the world consider their parents to be their best friends, with Indonesia (98%), Brazil (96%) and India (96%) in the lead, and Japan dragging the Global average down with only 38%.
  • Youth in developed countries seem to be sick of their parents, whereas youth in developing countries either want their parents to spend more time with them, or are much more open to the idea:
    • India (70%), Indonesia (40%), China and South Africa (37%), Brazil (33%), Argentina (28%) and Mexico (22%) topped the ranking, against only 2% in Japan, 8% in Germany and Denmark, and 9% in the UK and Sweden.
    • Developed countries feel they are getting more support from friends than they are from families. Conversely, developing countries feel they are getting more support from family than from friends
  • With the exception of Argentina and Mexico, youth in developing countries were twice as likely to want their parents as their best friends.
  • Having lots of friends matters the most to Argentinian and Brazilian K8-15, behind only China, and surprisingly not so much to Mexican kids, who are in the bottom two ahead of Sweden.
New technology
  • Digital technology and media is changing kids' behavior.
    • Chinese K8-15 are almost twice as likely as kids in any another country to look at news online.
    • Chinese A16-34 have an average of 22 online friends, and 30% of them said they found it easier to maker friends online than in person.
    • 40% of Brazilian youth plan to meet more friends online in the future.
    • Youth in Germany, Japan and Sweden turn to the Internet more often than the TV to keep up with local news, although youth around the world places much more trust in the news they see on TV.

The Wellbeing Index
As part of the survey, MTVN developed the Wellbeing Index to compare the perceived wellbeing of A16-34 in different parts of the world. The index is based on the perceptions of young people themselves and how they feel about safety, where they fit in to their society and how they see their future.  The country where young people had the greatest perceived sense of wellbeing was India, followed by Sweden with the U.S. coming third.  Both qualitative and quantitative research analysis was gathered via questionnaires, online, telephone, face-to-face interviews and ethnographic immersions. MTVN commissioned Synovate YC to conduct the project globally.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Taffy Entertainment has opened a new Asian office in Shanghai, which will be headed Yangsook (Grace) Lee.  She will focus on selling Taffy's programming to Asian broadcasters.  Most recently, Lee was VP/Business Development, House Films.  Previously she held International Sales Manager roles at Neuroplanet Group, responsible for the Asia Pacific region.
