Cynopsis: Multi-Cultural & International
Edition 11/22/06 Good Morning. It's Wednesday, November 22, 2006, and this is your first early morning Multi-Cultural briefing. While several thousand people gathered yesterday at NYC's Riverside Church to remember and celebrate the life and work of 60 Minutes correspondent Ed Bradley, the media industry was dealt another blow with the news John M. Higgins, journalist and Business Editor for Broadcasting & Cable Magazine, passed away Monday evening from a heart attack at the age of 45. Throughout the industry, John was well respected for his tough reporting skills and his keen knowledge of the business. He first joined B&C in 1997 after working at Multichannel News. FCC Chairman Richard Wiley:
HISPANIC MARKET: Following a new agreement with Si TV, Verizon Wireless will exclusively offer two new channels on its V CAST service: Si TV Comedy and Si TV Latino. In addition to featured clips updated every day from shows such as Unacceptable Behavior, The Drop and Latino Laugh Festival, Si TV will also provide show related content made exclusively for mobile and broadband. AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET: BET Networks' broadcast of the inaugural BET Hip-Hop Awards last Wednesday drew a 2.93 rating for a total of 3.64 million viewers (2.44 million households) according to Nielsen Media Research. Among African American viewers, the network scored big with a 32.3 audience share. By the way…if you missed it the first time around, BET will air it again on Thanksgiving night, November 23 at 9p. Advertising in African American magazines magazines tracked by BlackMagazineMonitor in October totaled $40.6 million on 1,040.83 total ad pages. Year-to-date measured ad dollars total $364.5 million and 9,795.11 ad pages. Ad pages in October were mixed compared to the previous year for the major African American (AA) titles. Ad pages were up on a year-over-year basis at Black Enterprise (+21.3%), Essence (+7.8%), and Sister 2 Sister (75%). However, ad pages fell at Ebony (-12.6%), Jet (-22.5%), The Source (-35.9%), and Vibe (-8.2%). Overall, ad pages for the major AA titles were down by 3.3% in October, compared to previous year. Estimated ad dollars at those magazines fell by 1.7%. Year-to-date (January to October), ad pages for the major AA magazines have also declined by 3.2% and estimated ad dollars have dropped slightly (-0.4%). Ad pages have declined at virtually all the major AA titles except for Essence (+2.2%), Sister 2 Sister (+56.2%), and Vibe Vixen (+393%). (Vibe Vixen did increase its publishing frequency from semi-annual in 2005 to quarterly in 2006). At the category level, the categories showing the largest increases in ad spending through October of this year include Haircare (+43.5%), Cosmetics (+51%), Skincare-face (+107.9%), and Household Supplies (+18.9%) categories. Among the categories showing the largest decreases in ad spending through October were the Auto manufacturers (-18.3%) and Apparel & Accessories (-31.8%) categories. There were 596 active brands (down from 621 in September), 418 active advertisers (parent-company level), 1,040.83 total ad pages and $40.6 million total ad dollars. New advertising activity for September includes 134 new brands/campaigns with 200.63 ad pages and $8.4 millionin new spending. There were 47 new advertisers from the month (increase from September's 30), spending $1.4 million for a total of 49.32 ad pages. In a year-to-date analysis (January - October 2006), there were 2, 655 active brands, 1,418 active advertisers (parent-level), 9,795.11 total ad pages and $364.5 million total ad revenues. ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET: Discovery Networks Asia is partnering with the National Film Development Corporation (FINAS) and the Ministry of Culture, Arts & Heritage of Malaysia to commission FTFM Malaysia, an initiative designed to showcase the talents of up-and-coming Malaysian filmmakers. FTFM is targeted at providing Malaysian filmmakers with the opportunity to receive hands-on training and professional development from Discovery Channel producers, as well as a chance to showcase their talent on an international level. The initiative seeks to present a real picture of Malaysia to Discovery Channel viewers through the eyes of its people. The initiative will result in five 30-minute films that will premiere on Discovery Channel next year to commemorate 50 years of Malaysia's nationhood. More info at www. discoverychannelasia.com/ ftfm. JEWISH MARKET: Shalom TV will air exclusive TV coverage of presentations and events from the 2006 UJC General Assembly, the largest annual gathering of Jewish community leaders. Among the full-length speeches available on Shalom TV are Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert offering to meet with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and speaking about the kidnapped Israeli soldiers. In addition, speeches from Likud Chair Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni will be offered on Shalom TV's SVOD service. CROSS-MARKET: Comcast Corporation and The Walt Disney Company have entered into a long-term distribution agreement spanning the next ten years which will affect the 10 ABC owned television stations and many of the Disney-owned networks and services including Disney Channel, ABC Family, Toon Disney, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Classic, ESPNEWS, ESPN HD as well as carriage upgrades for SOAPnet. Some highlights of the agreement include:
MTV Networks announced a new initiative titled (RED) to eliminate AIDS in Africa. The 90-second (RED) Manifesto will air as a special "roadblock" across MTVN's channels. The roadblock is in support of and will build awareness of the (RED) effort to turn “Black Friday,” the biggest shopping day of the year, into “(RED) Friday,” the biggest giving day of the year. Companies whose products take on the (PRODUCT) RED mark contribute a significant percentage of sales profits to the Global Fund to finance AIDS programs in Africa. The (RED) Manifesto is the first element of the (RED) TV campaign that will roll out across MTVN channels in the coming months. To find out more about the campaign's components, check MTV.com, VH1.com, and www.joinred.com. Current partners include American Express (U.K. only), Converse, Gap, Giorgio Armani, Motorola and Apple with MySpace.com as the first media sponsor in the U.K. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: MTV Networks International will extend two of its brands into Pakistan, MTV and Nickelodeon, following licensing agreements with Indus Media Group (IMG) and ARY Digital Network, respectively. MTV Pakistan launched today to 3.5 million cable and satellite households. Can you believe that this will be MTV's 57th localized channel? As part of the agreement, the current Indus Music channel becomes the all-new MTV Pakistan, which will combine local and international music videos and entertainment. Locally produced long-form programming fronted by local presenters are complemented by signature shows from MTV channels around the world. IMG Chairman Ghazanafar Ali will also serve as MTV Pakistan's CEO. Nickelodeon is now available in 2.5 million Pakistani cable and satellite households in partnership with ARY Digital Network. Targeting K2-12, Nick Pakistan will offer a diverse range of programming genres that include a mix of international and regionally produced series, including animation, live action, comedy, game shows and pre-school programming. In continuation to yesterday's mention of MTV Networks International's global study, we are bringing several more topics to you on kids and youth well being around the world. The MTV Networks International's Wellbeing Study took six months to complete and encompassed 5,200 interviews with K8-15 and A16-34 in 14 countries (Argentina, Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Sweden, the UK and the U.S). You will see the remainder of the findings (Family and Friends, New Technology, and The Wellbeing Index) in Monday's edition. Terror and safety
