Cynopsis: Multi-Cultural & International
Edition 11/20/06 Good Morning. It's Monday, November 20, 2006, and this is your first early morning Multi-Cultural briefing. HISPANIC MARKET: The broadcast of ESPN Deportes Radio and MRN Radio's NASCAR radio programming for the 2007 season has been released. As previously announced in October, the ESPN network became the exclusive Spanish-language place for MRN Radio through the 2012 season. ESPN Deportes Radio's coverage began this past weekend with live updates from the Ford Championship Weekend and its Ford 300 NASCAR Busch and Ford 400 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup finals. As of today, the radio network will begin to air daily 2-minute Una Vuelta Con NASCAR update segments in the morning and afternoon with Andres Agulla as host. The segments will be part of the SportsCenter show. Future plans include live race updates from fourteen of Daytona International Speedway's runs circuit's facilities as of February and running through 2007. Bernardo Pillati and Carlos Arratia will lend their voices with play-by-play comments. According to HispanicMagazineMonitor's update on Hispanic magazine advertising activity in October 2006, advertising in Hispanic magazines for the month totaled $25.5 million, a 10.3% increase from the previous year. Ad pages were down by 2.4% to 1,272.79. Magazines posting the largest year-over-year increases in ad dollars included People en Espanol (+26%), Latina (+21%), Espera (+18%), Vanidades (+32%), and Mira! (+36%). Magazines with year-over-year declines in ad dollars included: Selecciones (-9.1%), Ser Padres (-21.7%), and Hispanic Business (-15%). From January through October, ad dollars in Hispanic magazines totaled $195.3 million, a 15.4% increase from previous year. Ad pages, however, were basically flat (+0.3%) to 9,931.16 through the month of October. Top categories showing increased spending so far this year include Haircare (+49%), Cosmetics (+26%), Department stores (+26%), Apparel & accessories (+44%), and Direct Response (nec) (+17%). However, spending in the key auto category (the single largest category in Hispanic magazines) remains down by 8.4% year-to-date. Increased spending in July and August was followed by a sharp 16% drop in ad spending by auto-makers in September and a 35% drop in October. Year-over-year comparisons continue to be negatively affected by the closures of Cristina in December of last year and Shape en Espanol in early 2006. Kraft's Comida y Familia has been added to the HispanicMagazineMonitor tracking list beginning with all 2006 issues. There were 647 active brands as opposed to 545 in September, 460 active advertisers (parent-company level), 1,272.79 total ad pages and $25.5 million total ad revenue. New advertising activity for October included 116 new brands/campaigns totaling 187 ad pages and $3.9 million in new spending. New advertiser numbers came down a bit from 43 in September to 39 in October totaling 53.4 ad pages and $581,183 in new spending. The January - October, 2006 key stats show that there were 2,108 active brands and 1,179 active advertisers for 9,931.16 total ad pages (+0.3% from 2005) and $195.3 million total ad revenue (+15.4% from 2005). The series combines musical numbers and drama with very human subjects such as commitment, homophobia, self-esteem, fear and unrequited love. Each episode ends with a visitation to one of the characters from a gay ghost of the past (i.e. Tennessee Williams, Walt Whitman, and others). Joel Castleberg produces with John Coppola directing and Jonuel Pozo writing. CROSS-MARKET: Earvin "Magic" Johnson is launching a new urban-focused media company in the beginning of 2007, which will also include internet and wireless-related aspects. The former NBA star's Magic New Media will be headed up by CEO John Huffman, who was recently CEO of Real Hip-Hop. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Although no official ink has hit agreement papers yet, six U.S. production houses will soon be signing deals with Shanghai Media Group's IPTV division, BestTV, to distribute their films over the internet in China. Buena Vista, Fox, Paramount, Sony, Universal, and Warner Bros. are expected to air on the service when it launches in 1Q2007, followed by a new VOD service. According to Shanghai Securities News, the studios will pick up money from Shanghai Media Group via fee shares, royalties, and cuts from ads in the films. The films on BestTV will still need to pass the Chinese censors but will bypass the country's annual quota of 20 foreign movies. Discovery has signed on to use Intelsat's Pas-12 satellite to transmit Discovery HD across Europe. The high def channel will originate from Discovery's European headquarters in London with GlobeCast Europe uplinking content through its U.K.-based Brookman's Park teleport. Granada International has picked up the global sales distribution rights, excluding the US, to two new shows from Original Productions. Resolutionaries (3x50) explores the trauma, perseverance and inadvertent humor of taking on the world's most popular (and most unfulfilled) self improvement projects, with the three episodes tackling Quitting Smoking, Losing Weight and Getting Organised. Each of the participants is teamed with an expert coach who guides their progress and keeps them motivated through temptation, frustration and psychological barriers. The 50-minute Holiday Madness looks at the growing phenomenon of Christmas lights and the people who compete against their neighbors to create the most elaborate Christmas display in town. Down under coming stateside … NBC will produce a pilot episode of Thank God You're Here following its acquisition of the format from Australia's Working Dog through its FremantleMedia rep. Here's the idea…throw performers and/or comedians through a door into an unknown scene in which they must improvise through the scene's next five minutes. The series is already in over 10 markets including Germany, Holland, and Israel and has been quite the hit in its native Australia on Ten network. EXECUTIVE MOVES: Cookie Jar Entertainment named Wiebke Hoefer as Director/European Sales. She will manage European television and home video sales, reporting to Jean-Michel Ciszewski, SVP/International Sales and Co-Productions. Wiebke was previously of Director/Television and Home Video Sales with Nelvana Enterprises. She will be based in Paris.
