Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It's Tuesday, November  7, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing. 

With the aim of producing new family holiday season classic programming, ABC announced it will premiere Shrek The Halls, a new original animated holiday 30 minute special from DreamWorks Animation SKG, December 2007.  Shrek The Halls will feature the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas reprising their original roles from the Shrek feature films.  The special will be directed by Gary Trousdale and produced by Teresa Cheng and Gina Shay.

Marvel Studios and Universal Pictures will release The Incredible Hulk feature film in theaters on June 27, 2008.  Directed by Louis Leterrier, The Incredible Hulk movie will takes its storyline and feel from the long-running comic series.  Zak Penn, who collaborated with Marvel on X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand, is writing the script.  The movie will be produced by Avi Arad, Kevin Feige and Gale Anne Hurd and executive produced by Michael Helfant, David Womark, and Ari Arad. 


MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network's first original movie, Re-Animated, will premiere on Friday, December 8, at 8-10p.  Produced in a combination of animation and live-action elements, Re-Animated revolves around Jimmy Roberts, a 12-yr-old who has an accident and finds himself in need of a brain transplant. In the end, he receives the brain of a famous cartoonist, played by Fred Willard, and from there on Jimmy sees the world differently: a world of cartoon characters who turn his life inside out.  Actors Paul Reubens, Tom Kenny, Ellen Greene and Brian Posehn lend their voices to some of the cartoon characters Jimmy sees. Created/written by Adam Pava and Tim McKeon and directed by Bruce Hurwit, Re-Animated is a Renegade Animation, Appleday Pictures, and Cartoon Network production.  A three-minute special preview trailer of Re-animated can be viewed at www.cartoonnetwork.com/reanimated_preview.

TBS is set to offer downloads of original programming content from Adult Swim and NASCAR.com, as of Wednesday, November 22 for Xbox 360 console users via Xbox Live.  Shows available for downloaded include Adult Swim's Robot Chicken, The Venture Bros., Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sealab 2021 and Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law, in addition to available clips of Race Rewind via NASCAR.COM.  Race Rewind will offer 10-minute, condensed versions of past NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series races.

Actor/musician Drake Bell, one of the stars of Nickelodeon's Drake & Josh, has been signed to a recording deal with Universal Motown Records, which will release his first CD, It's Only Time on December 5.  The first single off the CD is a cut titled I Know, written/produced and performed by Drake and his band.  The music video for the song is slated to premiere this week on MTV's TRL.  Also included on the release is the Drake & Josh theme song Found A Way, penned by Drake and band mate Michael Corcoran, and performed by Drake (on both the series and the album).  To support the launch of the album, Universal Motown is offering those who purchase the CD a limited edition DVD that includes behind the scenes content from Drake & Josh, outtakes from a photo shoot, an acoustic performance and the I Know music video


MARKETING/LICENSING

SEGA has snapped up the exclusive worldwide rights to develop and distribute video game titles based on Marvel Entertainment's Iron Man property.  Under the licensing deal SEGA will develop games based on both Marvel upcoming Iron Man feature as well as the comic book versions of the character.  The first title will be based on Marvel Studios' Iron Man movie, Marvel's first independently produced movie, set for release May 2, 2008.  While Iron Man marks the first part of the multi-year pact, at least one additional Marvel super hero property is to be developed for next generation gaming platforms.  The Iron Man video game rights were previously held by Activision which had planned to develop game titles based on New Line Cinema's Iron Man movie that did not come to fruition.

THQ Inc. is planning to publish and release Ratatouille, a video based on the Disney/Pixar animated movie of the same name, across eleven major gaming platforms (e.g. consoles, handhelds, PC and Mac, and wireless devices).  The Ratatouille game, currently in at THQ's Heavy Iron Studios, is slated to be released simultaneously across all platforms to coincide with the release of the movie in summer 2007.  Additionally, THQ Wireless is developing wireless content (e.g. games, wallpapers and ring-tones) based the movie.

Miniclip.com, the youth-targeted game developer/publisher/website, launches an original Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest game today.  The new game will support Buena Vista Home Entertainment's December 5 release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest on both DVD and on iTunes.  Miniclip.com has previously launched original movie tie-in games for Superman Returns and Chicken Little.

In other Buena Vista Worldwide Home Entertainment news, Disney/Pixar's animated feature film Cars can be downloaded at iTunes beginning today.

Big Idea is set to release two new Spanish language VeggieTales DVDs, Gideon: Tuba Warrior and Minnesota Cuke and the Search for Samson's Hairbrush will be released on December 1.  Big Idea is developing local outreach events to bring the VeggieTales characters to Hispanic neighborhoods, a Spanish-language webpage including interactive games, parenting tools and an in-language VeggieGram monthly e-newsletter, in addition to a national live tour.  Big Idea also plans to customize the existing 27 VeggieTales titles and bonus content for Hispanic audiences.  VeggieTales' 3-2-1 Penguins and Larry Boy Adventures, also air weekly in Spanish as part of the qubo programming block.  The Spanish-language version of the VeggieTales bowed on Telemundo this past September as part of the new qubo Saturday morning programming block.  The qubo block also airs on NBC and the i network in English.

Educational TV programs are successful in broadening young kid's knowledge, affecting their racial attitudes and increasing their imaginations, acquiring general knowledge and improving overall cognitive knowledge, according to a study published today in the November issue of Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.  The researchers of the new study reviewed 12 previous studies conducted between 1973 and 2000 and focused specifically on TV content viewed by Kids under 6 yrs and its impact on learning, racial preference, aggression, pro-social behavior, self-regulation and imagination. None of these studies looked at infant TV viewing or examined the content of videos designed for kids.  There is evidence that educational TV programming that emphasizes diversity can improve children's racial attitudes.  On the negative side, there is evidence that TV viewing can increase a child's display of aggression.  The study noted concerns about extensive TV viewing by kids under 2yrs and recommended adults exercise caution for those over 2yrs.  More info at http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/reprint/118/5/202 5

Veoh Networks, the internet TV Company, has appointed John MacDonald as President, based in San Diego.  He will oversee content acquisition and programming and will report to CEO and Founder, Dmitry Shapiro.  McDonald was previously GM, Fine Living Network and he served as CEO and President, InnovaTV.com. 

Davis Public Relations has named Kat Garcia as VP/Publicity.  Garcia will manage both trade and consumer clients as well as develop and implant publicity strategies and campaigns domestically and internationally.  She work closely with President and Founder Stacey Davis Levy, Most recently, Garcia was Direction/International Media, SSA Public Relations, where she handled market-related publicity strategies for clients attending NATPE, Toy Fair, MIPTV, Licensing International, Brand Licensing London, MIPCOM JR and MIPCOM JR.
