MCE 09/06/06 Good Morning. It's Wednesday, September 6, 2006, and this is your first early morning Multi-Cultural briefing. HISPANIC MARKET: Cisneros Group's Venevision Intl. (VVI) launched a new 24-hour Spanish-language film channel named VeneMovies with carriage agreements already in place with Comcast and Insight. The network will air contemporary films from the company's 350+ film library, commercial-free with English subtitles. Other programming will include footage from Latino film festivals and more. Some of the titles already picked for airing include La ley de Herodes (Herod's Law), Otilia Rauda, Los ninos invisibles (The Invisible Children) and others. Alejandro Parisca has been named to head up the network according to Variety. He will report to CEO/President Luis Villanueva and VP/Entertainment Jose Antonio Espinal. Recording artist Carlos Ponce will take on a new role this fall as spokesperson for The History Channel en espanol. During Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), the Puerto Rican singer, songwriter and actor will join the network in a special tribute, highlighting some of the greatest heroes and moments in Latin American history and introducing five documentary films airing at 8p: Balseros, The Madness of Don Quixote, Behind the Shadows, State of Fear and The Kidnapping of Ingrid Betancourt.
The Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF) will celebrate a decade of showcasing U.S. and international Latino films and culture from October 5-15, 2006. The festival returns to the Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. During the 11-day festival, LALIFF offers Latino films, film industry workshops, seminars, panels and labs led by Hollywood film community players. LALIFF programs offered throughout the years will also be presented at the festival. ABC is targeting Hispanic audiences with new primetime spots promoting Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty with its U.S. Hispanic agency of record, ARENAS, and Transit Television Network (Transit TV). The latter will air promo spots for the shows on its mobile broadcast network (Transit TV screens found on transit vehicles across select major markets). Both spots will run in Spanish. mun2 unveiled a new on-air campaign yesterday introducing the network's VJ personalities. The VJ campaign will present five 30-second spots featuring the network's resident VJs: Frankie Needles, Crash, Ellie, Yasmin Deliz and Renato Lopez. Each on-air spot features an individual VJ in a natural setting that shows their distinctive personality traits. AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET: VisionTV International (VTVI), the joint venture between VisionTV and Ellis Entertainment, has wrapped shooting and started post-production on a second season of Divine Restoration, for delivery in September. The 13-episode original series returns with network commitments from TV One and Canada VisionTV. The design and renovation series features a different church with a desire to support the needs of its community in each episode. ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET: Television Korea 24, Inc.'s (tvK24) flagship network tvK has picked up carriage on Charter Communications' digital Family and Information tier. The tvK launch includes a portion of Charter's LA market in Southern California, encompassing Glendale, Burbank, La Crescenta, La Canada Flintridge and Montrose. This will be tvK's second launch on a Charter Communications system (first was the Inland Empire market). Here are the top ten markets ranked by Asian American TV households according to Nielsen Media Research's updated universe estimates for Hispanic, African American and Asian American TV households in its 210 local television markets or Designated Market Areas (DMAs). In the Asian American household estimates, most of the top ten DMAs experienced household figure growth compared to last year with Houston entering the top ten list, kicking Boston down to the number eleven spot. The top ten markets ranked by African American TV households will appear in tomorrow's edition. Each 30-minute episode scientifically examines the risks and damaging results of major disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes that could possibly hit major cities, including New York, Dallas, Memphis and San Francisco. International Broadcast Communications, Inc. (IBC) has signed a few more deals for the 30-minute entertainment series Famous. The latest sales include a 104x30 agreement with Sitcom's Marco Polo TV in Italy. Season one will begin airing this fall season. AXN Japan will premiere season 3 of FAMOUS beginning in September, while Club launches the series with season 1 in September. Shalom TV Executives: Rabbi Mark S. Golub, President/CEO; Bradford N. Hammer, COO; Edith Samers, VP/Marketing; David Brugnone, VP/Sales; Dr. Evgueni Lvov, VP/Operations Long term View: Cynopsis MCE Question: "How do you see Shalom TV evolving over the course of the next 5-10 years?" Rabbi Mark S. Golub, President/CEO: "There has been a stunning void in Jewish programming on American television and we hope that Shalom TV will help fill that void. As a mainstream cultural network, rather than a ‘religious' network, we believe that Shalom TV will appeal to virtually every corner of the American Jewish community and that Shalom TV will become a part of every Jewish home. In addition, we know there are many other thoughtful and bright individuals of other faiths who are interested in learning more about Jewish life, the Jewish tradition and the Holy Land of Israel. Shalom TV will simply celebrate the totality of Jewish life and culture with entertaining, informative and compelling programming."
