With the downturn of the national economy, so goes the decline of US advertising spending. In a new report released by Nielsen, ad spending during the first quarter of this year decreased overall by -12% compared to first quarter 2008. In dollars the decline equates to -$3.8 billion for a total of $27.9 billion in first quarter. The biggest hit went to Local Sunday Supplements at -37.7% and in the broadcast category the largest decrease was Spot TV 101-210 DMAs at -28.9% followed by Syndication TV at -18.8%; Spot TV Top 100 DMAs at -15.6%; Spanish-Language TV at -13.8%; Network Radio at -12.6%; Spot Radio at -9.0%; Network TV at -4.8%; Cable TV at -2.7%; and Spanish-Language Cable TV at -1.1%. Internet advertising also declined by -3.4% during first quarter this year. E!'s new series Kendra opened Sunday night at 10p as the second highest rated series premiere ever on the network, behind the debut of The Anna Nicole Show on August 4, 2002. Kendra delivered a 2.13 HH rating; as well as 3.66 among W18-34; 2.62 with W18-49; 1.81 with A18-49 as well as averaging 2.6 million total viewers. Immediately following the premiere of Kendra, the second season of Denise Richards: It's Complicated opened at 11p posting a 1.37 HH rating and a 1.15 among A18-49 in addition to drawing more than 1.5 million total viewers. Apple unveiled its next
generation iPhone 3G S at its annual developer's conference, slated for
release with the new iPhone 3.0 OS on June 19 - timed almost exactly 2
years after the release of the first iPhone model when early adopters'
contracts expire. The phone is likely to spawn a new generation of mobile
video and photo applications thanks to faster processing speeds, longer
battery life, easy-to-use video recording software and a real 3 megapixel
camera. The autofocus camera automatically adjusts focus, exposure and
contrast. You can record high-quality video clips and edit them right on
the iPhone 3G S by simply trimming the start and stop points. You can
also send photos and video by email or MMS and post them directly to
YouTube or Apple's $99/year MobileMe subscription service with a single
tap. The new iPhone will retail for $199 with 16 GB online and at
AT&T, Best Buy and Wal-Mart stores. In a move to capture more price
sensitive folks, the existing iPhone 3G model dropped in price to $99,
effective immediately.
