Despite ranking third in ratings among A18-49
this past Thursday night, NBC is giving its newer police drama
Southland a second season chance. The series, from creator John
Wells (ER), was given a 13-episode order for a probable fall return on
Thursdays at 9p. The 10p Thursday slot where Southland now resides, is
reserved for NBC's anticipated Jay Leno primetime program. Paranormal
crime drama Medium also received a renewal order over the weekend.
An exact number of new episodes were not confirmed for Medium, though 13
to 18 episodes are expected. Moreover, NBC is finalizing a renewal order
for its new midseason sitcom Parks and Recreation starring Amy
Poehler and two other series, Chuck and Law & Order
will likely be renewed. NBC has also been involved all weekend in
full-season renewal negotiations with 20th TV over My Name Is Earl's
fifth run. Additionally, several other pilots are awaiting their
pickups including Community, Parenthood, Trauma, 100 Questions for
Charlotte Payne and Off Duty. NBC is poised to make more announcements
about new and returning series as the network serves up its
"infront" presentations for advertisers and the press beginning
today in New York. Starting May 17, Fuse presents a new two-hour block of live music programming on Sundays featuring two acquired weekly series, Live From Abbey Road at 9p followed by Later ... With Jools Holland at 1030p. Live From Abbey Road will watch as today's hot performers such as Mary J. Blige, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Dave Matthews, record at the famous recording studio in London. Later ... with Jools Holland has British pop star Jools Holland interview and perform with contemporary artists such as Radiohead, Morrissey and Vampire Weekend. Local television stations are selling at down-and-dirty prices in Canada as CTVglobemedia sold three stations for a $1 each to Calgary-based cable operator Shaw Communications cites THR. Each of the stations, located in Brandon, Manitoba and Wingham and Windsor, Ontario, were all operating at huge losses and were expected to close soon if no buyer stepped forward. Shaw Communications made a similar offer to Canwest Global Communications Corp. for its five E!- branded conventional TV stations that are on the brink of closing, though no formal deal has been accepted. BBC America will not premiere the third season of Hotel Babylon on May 15 as planned, opting to shelve the series return until sometime later this year. Instead, BBC America will debut the series Don't Tell the Bride with two back-to-back episodes starting at 8p, with this series remaining on Fridays with double episodes at 8p and 9p. The June 12 DTV transition date is just seven weeks away and Nielsen reports 3.5 million or 3.1% of US TV households remain completely unready for the change. Within the last two weeks since the last update, 100,000+ households made the switch and Hispanic households moved from being 5.4% unready to 5%. CYNOPSIS DIGITAL - TODAY'S
TOP STORY:
Fears of online piracy's
adverse effect on Hollywood received a reality check over the weekend as
X-Men Origins: Wolverine clawed its way to $87 million at the box
office in its debut, despite being widely available on P2P file sharing
sites a full month before its release. The movie topped the first two
X-Men installments (although not the third,) despite lukewarm reviews and
off-the-cuff advise from Vice President Joe Biden to avoid confined and
crowded spaces. Of course, the success doesn't mean that Fox, the FBI and
MPAA will give up its hunt for the leaker.
