Good morning. It's Thursday, December 4, 2008, and this is your
first early morning International &
Multicultural briefing.
INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
The U.K.'s Icon Films is taking history with History
to a whole new level. The producer has been commissioned by the channel
to produce the 120-minute All About Dung (nope, not kidding), hosted by Royal
Marine-turned-Marine Biologist Monty Halls. The show takes in depth looks
at the historical, cultural, medical, scientific and evolutionary importance of
human and animal waste. All About Dung will air internationally on
History (already aired in the U.S.) with global distribution to be handled by AETN
International.
Alfred Hedgehog, a new, 52x11-minute animated series for the K6-9 crowd headed
into pre-production in Paris and Montreal. Muse Entertainment and
France's Gaumont Alphanim are the producers on board producing the show
for TVO, TFO, Radio-Canada and Knowledge Network in
Canada and France 5 in France. The two will also handle
international repping duties.
The Asia Television Forum has already proven fruitful for the U.K.'s Outright

U.K. volleys will hit U.S. and international courts as ESPN picks up all
4 rounds of the Ricoh Women's British Open live on the network starting in
2010. As part of the 8-year contract, the main ESPN channel will have 12
live hours of Championship play over the 4 days. Same day Sunday coverage
will be on ABC in addition to digital rights, ESPN2 and more TV and digital
media rights for ESPN International. Other ESPN platforms joining the
match are www.ESPN.com, www.ESPN360.com, and ESPN Mobile Properties. ESPN International's
coverage includes ESPN in Latin America/Caribbean, TSN and RDS in
Canada, ESPN Star Sports in Asia and ESPN360 in Mexico, Chile and
Brazil. The rights have been extended and expanded in Canada, Asia,
Israel and Latin America as have the English-language rights in China (ESPN
Sports Star Sports). More digital rights in all of its licensed territories
(excluding China) were also written into the deal, including live streaming of
events, multiplatform highlight rights, TV and digital VOD and mobile TV.
And the rights for the FIFA Club World Cup 2008 go to (drumroll please) Fox
Soccer Channel for the fourth consecutive year. The network scored
the live and exclusive English-language rights for the Toyota-presented annual
tournament taking place in Japan from December 11 through December 21. It
includes the opening playoff match, quarterfinals, semifinals, the third and
fifth place match and, of course, the final.

CROSS-MARKET:
The Multi-Ethnic Media Coalition, made up of the National
Latino Media Council, the Asian Pacific American Media Coalition and
the American Indians in Film & TV, released their annual diversity
Report Card for the 4 major broadcasters. The report card is based on
statistical info provided by the networks which then measures performance for
diverse actors in regular and recurring roles, diverse directors,
writers/producers, entertainment creative executives, program development,
supplier diversity and overall network commitment to diversity initiatives.
FOX was the only network to improve its overall diversity grade, moving
up from a B- to a B+. NBC and CBS kept their overall diversity performance grades of B
and B+, respectively. However, ABC went down from an A- to a B+,
with American Latino actors showing up in unscripted reality but much less so
in scripted primetime programming.
HISPANIC MARKET:
With Nielsen Media Research's November NTI ratings in, Telemundo
revealed that the month delivered the Spanish-language network's best November
performance over a 16-year period among Total Viewers (averaged 1.2 million
persons 2+) in weekday prime. It also brought in Telemundo's second best
performance in 16 years for the same timeslot for A18-49, A18-34 and
Households. Telemundo also averaged 645,000 A18-49 in 4Q2008, growing 19%
over 4Q2007 (542,000), according to Nielsen's Live+SD ratings (November 2008 =
10/27/08-11/30/08; 4Q 2008 = 9/29/08-11/30/08; 2008-2009 Season=
9/22/08-11/30/08).
Cablevision has launched Optimum Latino, a new web channel
delivering Spanish-language content exclusively for Optimum Online
customers. Featuring news, entertainment, sports and the 15-channel Terra
TV platform, the service is accessible through Optimum Online's consumer www.Optimum.net.
