INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Canadian unionized actors may be inching closer to a strike following the latest moves between ACTRA and the country's ad agencies after 17 negotiation-filled months. The 21,000-member association and Institute of Communications Agencies and the Association of Canadian Advertisers have requested a conciliation officer's report, moving the commercial actors towards a possible mid-October strike time. Their contract expired nearly 4 months ago in June. The results of the members' vote to strike or not will be published by October 15. BBC Worldwide (BBCW) is restructuring its kiddie business under its new MD, Neil Ross Russell. The newly renamed Children's and Licensing unit will be divided into three units focusing on preschool, preteen and adult licensing, respectively. In addition to the restructuring news, the company inked a new deal with its joint venture partner, Ragdoll, under which the BBCW will manage the latter's U.S and Canadian TV sales and licensing. With this recent North American agreement, BBCW now reps all of Ragdoll's international distribution rights except for the U.K. In Poland, the SPI media group has announced 2009 plans to debut a new high-def domestic movie channel under the name Kino Polska HD. Offered on digital and certain cable operators, the channel is expected to bring Polish documentaries, films and animated material to viewers midway through next year. Slovenian IPTV operator, Planet 9, is launching BabyTV on in its Basic Tier. It currently is offered in the country on T2 in addition to upcoming launches on IPTV operators AMIS and Tus Telekom next month. ShineReveille's The Life and Times of Tim will have its own time slot on the U.K.'s Virgin Media later in 2008. Televisa is revving up its China production connections with the network's Ugly Betty version making her debut in the country this past weekend. Four more productions are reportedly in the works for the Mexican company in China. Dumb Girls Don't Go to Heaven (Las Tontas no van al Cielo) will be remade by Shanghai Media Group for a national airing, per Variety. The Stepmother (La Madrastra) goes to Beijing's Minghe while Zhejiang-based Huace Film has Esmeralda and Beijing Ciwen Film & TV takes on The Outsider (La Intrusa). Carnival, NBC Universal's newest acquisition in the U.K., has received a solid go-ahead to produce The Philanthropist, a fresh series produced from Carnival's London base for a mid-season debut. It is scheduled to start production in November mainly from the U.K. with some shooting taking place in South America. HISPANIC MARKET: Azteca America is launching a nightly news magazine, Al Extremo (To The Extreme), as a daily 60-minute show delving into real-life stories with host Juan Barragan (former Hechos AM news anchor) joined by Aline Hernandez and Maria Teresa Alexandri. The new show airs at 10p Monday through Thursday and on Fridays when the soccer schedule permits. It replaces Pasiones Prohibidas, which is moving to the 11a slot. In addition, the network is bringing in two anchors for Noticiero National Azteca America: Jorge Mendiola and Edith Serrano. Starting today, former Noticiero National Azteca America anchor, Jose Martin Samano will begin anchoring the local newscasts in Dallas, Houston, LA and Las Vegas. LATAM MARKET: The series premiere of Isa TKM (Te Quiero Mucho) will take place today at 7p (730p Venezuela) on Nickelodeon Latin America. This first original telenovela series for tweens from the network was co-produced with Sony Pictures Television International. Not to be left out, Sony BMG Music Entertainment also partnered with the network to oversee all music production for the series with a soundtrack album to be released in Latam in November. The story is written by Venezuela's Mariela Romero and produced in that country. GAY/LESBIAN MARKET: The international debut of Queer Streets, a new documentary about LGBT homeless youth, happened this week on Logo as part of the network's Real Momentum sixth season.
