~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
CBS Paramount Network TV will develop a
television series based on a new series of mystery novels by Judi
McCoy, according to Variety. CBS Paramount optioned
Hounding the Pavement, the first of a three-book deal which will
be published by Penguin paperback division Obsidian Mysteries next March.
Juniper Place Productions' Jeffrey Kramer will produce the TV series and
Hy Conrad (Monk) will adapt the book for television. Hounding the
Pavement is about a Manhattan dogwalker who tries to find out who
murdered her client with help from her doggie charges. For those who loved the 1970s version of The Partridge Family a modern-day edition of the family series is in the works by Reveille and Geffen Records in collaboration with the original rights holder, Sony Pictures TV, reports Variety. Jeff Rake (Cashmere Mafia) will write the script as well as executive produce along with Reveille executives and Interscope-Geffen-A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine and Geffen Records chairman Ron Fair. The series idea is currently being pitched to networks with a commitment expected soon. The genesis of the project came from talks between Fair and Howard Owens, Managing Director of Reveille who wanted to develop a family series that merges with the music industry. Specifics on the show are sketchy yet those involved say the new version will look nothing like the old which ran on ABC from 1970-74. HBO optioned the Tom Wolfe novel I Am Charlotte Simmons and is in the initial phase of developing an hour-long series, per Variety. Tina Brown and Bill Haber of Ostar Productions will produce and the duo is seeking a writer for the pilot. The 2004 novel is about a poor yet smart young woman from the South who goes to a fictional Ivy League university on a full scholarship as a freshman and encounters a social and sexual awakening. Casting Call: Food Network announced a national talent search has begun for season five of The Next Food Network Star. Amateur and professional chefs are encouraged to apply. A three-minute audition tape describing why applicants should be the network's new find should be submitted by the deadline date of October 31, 2008. Applications and contest rules can be found at www.FoodNetwork.com ; click on "Be on Food Network". In addition, the network will host several open casting calls with casting directors on hand and applicants should bring the application, a photograph and resume/bio. The open call cities include: Washington, D.C. October 3; New York City October 6; Los Angeles October 15; Charleston October 23; Portland, OR October 23; and Philadelphia October 29.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL - TODAY'S
TOP STORY:
The US music industry has
finally reached a deal regarding mechanical royalties for songs played by
online music services for streaming and limited music downloads. The
agreement, which now has to be approved by US Copyright Royalty
Judges, proposes that interactive webcasters and online subscriptions
services pay a straightforward royalty rate of 10.5% of revenue.
National Music Publishers Association President David Israelite
referred to the deal as an "historic agreement," ensuring that
songwriters and publishers can now "thrive" in the digital age.
However the agreement leaves performance royalties that must be paid to
music labels in place, (which increase from $.0014 per song, per listener
this year to $.0019 per song, per listener in 2010.) These rates are
expected to cripple independent radio stations and web 2.0 services like
Pandora, which has already warned that it may have to pack it in if the
fee structure isn't amended.
