INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Europe's RTL Group is picking up a two-thirds majority share is Greece's Alpha Media Group after inking an acquisition deal with its current owner, Dimitris Contominas. The 66.6% share went for 125.7 million euros ($185.8 million) with RTL Group also gaining 5 of the 9 Alpha Media Group Board of Directors seats and the right to nominate the CEO and COO. Dimitris Contominas will retain the right to nominate the Chairman of the Board of Directors. Expected to be finalized in October or November, the deal is, of course, subject to approval by the Greek Competition Commission. Following their recent purchase of Alliance Atlantis International Distribution, Echo Bridge Entertainment inked quite a few licensing deals.
In a $2 million distribution rights deal, SBS Productions in Korea has sold the Painter of the Wind series' broadcast and DVD rights to Japan's Avex. The series is based on Lee Jung-myeong's book about Shin Yun-bok. Nelvana Enterprises and its international partners, Spin Master Ltd., Sega Toys Ltd. and TMS Entertainment, Ltd., are producing an additional 26 episodes of the anime-style television series under the title Bakugan: New Vestroia. Spring 2009 is the expected delivery time for this second run of the series, which currently airs on the U.S.' Cartoon Network and Canada's TELETOON. CROSS-MARKET: Of the 616 scripted series regular characters announced to appear on the five broadcast networks this season, male characters will continue to outweigh female characters 57% (354) to 43% (262), according to a diversity study of the 2008-2009 primetime season released today by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). This is the fourth year that GLAAD has tracked the gender, race and ethnicity of all characters on primetime. 79% (485) of all series regular characters are white, up 2% from last year. Latino/a representation remains at 6% (34) while black representation has dropped from 12% to 11% (67). Analysts counted 19 Asian-Pacific Islander characters (3%), one more than last season. HISPANIC MARKET: Spanish Broadcasting System's Gabriel megaseries will come to Mega TV's lineup this weekend on September 28 at 9p. Produced by MegaFilms and DirecTV Mas, the show is the first scripted dramatic MegaSeries, filmed in high-def with 3-D animation and special effects. Telemundo will air the three presidential debates, as well as the VP debates, live in Spanish from coast to coast and. The first begins September 26 at 9p between John McCain and Barack Obama at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, followed by others on October 2, 7 and 15. Right after each debate, Telemundo will air a special with the Noticiero Telemundo news team and political experts analyzing the debates as they pertain to the US Hispanic community. AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET: The Murder in Black and White documentary series will make its debut on October 5 at 10p on TV One, airing for four consecutive nights. Hosted by Al Sharpton, the 4x60-minute specials were filmed by the network in cooperation with the FBI to examine (and hopefully help solve) civil rights murders from the 1940s and '50s.
