Good morning. It's Tuesday, September 23, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

Global channel provider Chello Zone launched its Zone Club channel in the Middle East following a deal with Orbit Communications, bringing the channel's total reach in the region to 23 territories.  It will be locally branded The Hollywood Channel by Orbit and will focus on offering lifestyle entertainment programming for women airing in both English and Arabic.

Eastern European Acquisition Pool (EEAP), a Central and Eastern European film and license trading % subsidiary of A Company Licensing & Consulting AG, is continuing its 5-year old agreement with Poland's Canal Plus for another 3 years as part of a new deal.  Effective January 1, 2009, the Polish pay TV channel will gain access to most of EEAP's upcoming programming.

Astral Media's The Movie Network (Eastern Canada) and Corus Entertainment's Movie Central (Western Canada) are launching HBO Canada.  Launching on October 30, the channel will offer a full slate of HBO's series, movies, comedies and live events in both standard and high-def.  The programming will also be offered on demand through The Movie Network OnDemand and Movie Central On Demand where available.

Off the Fence has a new exclusive distribution agreement with the U.S.' WE tv for 220 hours of TV and video content internationally (outside the U.S.).  The deal includes original programs made specifically for WE tv such as Secret Lives of Women (58x44-episodes), Little Miss Perfect (6x44-episodes) and others.

U.K. factual format S#x with Mum and Dad is traveling to the U.S. after a signed deal between Shine and MTV with Picture This TV producing the 20x30-minute U.S. series.  Changing the title ever so slightly for the American lingo, the newly titled S#x with Mom and Dad will have Dr. Drew Pinsky working with parents and their teens on relationships and s#xuality.  The U.K. show made its debut in 2007 on BBC3.

For the third consecutive year, Alfred Haber Distribution, Inc. is the exclusive global distributor of Scream 2008, the 120-minute Spike TV show all about the horror, sci-fi, fantasy and comic book genres.

Down under, Beyond Distribution signed a slew of sales for its new The Suicide Tourist.  The latest deals for the documentary are with Norway's TV2, Denmark's DR, Belgium's VTM, Finland's MTVOY, Israel's DBS, Ireland's RTE, Australia's ABC and Thailand's Cineplex.  The show was produced by Point Grey Pictures in association with CTV.

Temple Street Productions and CBC Television are partnering once again on their Being Erica drama series. Principal photography on the inaugural season has already begun with production continuing in Toronto until mid-December. The 13x60-minute series will begin airing on CBC in January 2009.

Ameba, the Winnipeg-based kid-aimed IPTV system, signed an agreement with Barcelona's Sol 90 to distribute the Spanish-language animated history series Great Civilizations on AmebaTV.com. Targeted to kids/tweens 8-12, Great Civilizations was originally created as a series of 8x32-minutes or 16x16-minutes, but will be available for download and streaming in Spanish on AmebaTGV.com in various program lengths (e.g. interstitials, full episodes).

HISPANIC MARKET:

NBCU is collaborating with its mun2 network to expand its programming lineup announcing with the upcoming reality series, The Call Back.  The multi-platform acting school competition takes young Latino actors from across the U.S. to compete for a prize and a co-star role on an NBC Universal show.The series debuts June 2009.

ESPN Films will debut JC Chavez, the first Spanish-language film under the ESPN Films brand, on September 27 at 10p on ESPN Deportes and ESPN Classic.  The 78-minute movie is about Latin boxer Cesar Chavez, airing as part of ESPN's Hispanic Heritage Month programming lineup. It will air on ESPN Deportes in Spanish with Spanish graphics and on ESPN Classic in Spanish with English subtitles and graphics.

Univision's Al Diablo con los Guapos (Down with the Beautiful) novela's 2-hour grand finale gave the network the #1 place for the entire night among all A18-34 and A18-49, regardless of language according to Nielsen's NTI ratings.  On average, the show was watched by 6,780,000 Total Viewers 2+, 3,763,000 A18-49 and 2,448,000 A18-34.  In addition, local highlights showed the show being the #1 program in Total Day among households in LA, Dallas and San Antonio.

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

As part of Logo and Levi's new co-branded 360 marketing and programming agreement, the brand will solely sponsor an entire Saturday late night daypart of unedited TV-MA programming on various platforms such as the Logo network, online, mobile phones and on-the-ground events.  Levi's Presents Logo Unbuttoned will debut on Logo on October 12 from 1-3a and run for 30 weeks.

There will be more than twice as many gay and bisexual characters on the broadcast networks this coming season, according to a new report released today by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).  GLAAD's 13th annual Where We Are On TV report shows that out of 616 scripted series regular characters scheduled to appear on the five networks, 16 (2.6%) of them are gay or bisexual. This is a dramatic increase from last year's 1.1% representation. Fox shows the most growth, having gone from zero to five characters in one year. CBS is the lone network with no gay series regulars. Cable, meanwhile, took a dip for the first time dropping from last year's high of 40 to 32 LGBT characters on mainstream cable. MTV Networks International (MTVNI) named Antonio Campo Dall'Orto as EVP/Music Brands to increase collaborative efforts between the company's international content and creative talent.  In addition, he will continue his current responsibilities as MD of Europe South, overseeing Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Greece.  From his base in Milan, Antonio will remain reporting to Robert Bakish, MTVNI's President.
