Good morning. It's Thursday, September 18, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

BBC Worldwide will launch two new channels, CBeebies and BBC Knowledge, on FOXTEL this November.  The kiddy channel will become part of the My Playtime package, which includes Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Boomerang and others.  The My World package will house BBC Knowledge.

BabyTV grows into Africa with a launch on Nigeria's new DAARSAT satellite DTH by Daar Communications on October 7.  The network is already available in Africa via MyTV and TrendTV.

Eurocinema signed new carriage expansion agreements, bringing it to 1.5 million more homes in Canada on Shaw TV and its VOD service.  Shaw is a cable TV community channel based in Calgary, Alberta that is also available in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia.  Shaw TV is actually relaunching the network from its previous agreement for 1-2 offerings to now include all 10 features as well as bonus short films each month.

Huaso in Hong Kong, Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) and China Film Group's 4-year old digital production joint venture, will debut its first show on September 22 at 730p.  The Game will air on China's CCTV8 as a 24x60-minute suspense drama based on Liu Ping's The Lunatic novel.  CCTV's China International Television will be in charge of Chinese sales while SPTI will handle sales of The Game within China, while SPTI takes on the global market for the format and finished show.

Through a new deal between The Walt Disney Company's Disney-ABC International Television (Asia Pacific) and the TVNZ free-to-air broadcaster, New Zealand viewers will be able to access a selection of ad-supported U.S. network series on TVNZ's catch up TV service, TVNZ ondemand.  They will be offered free of charge 12 hours after the local telecast on TV2 for 28 days.  Private Practice's first season will kick off the new service with the series airing Mondays at 830pm on TV2.

Alfred Haber Distribution, Inc. is Nash Entertainment's pick to internationally rep Breaking The Magician's Code: Magic's Biggest Secrets Finally Revealed (13x60-minutes).  The show will first air on the U.S.' MyNetworkTV on October 2.

Icon Films is furthering its relationship with the U.K.'s Five with a new commission to produce Flesh-Eating River Monster, a 1x60-minute documentary, to air this fall as part of the Nature Shock strand.

Opera is hitting a high note with the U.K. distributor Electric Sky after the company picked up the distribution rights to a new catalog of opera and ballet titles from the Royal Opera House 2008/2009 season through its Opus Arte production company.  The high-def shows include Salome (1x100-minutes), Don Carlo (1x3.5 hours), La Traviata (3 acts - 145-minutes) and more.

Toronto's Bejuba! Entertainment is partnering with Skaramoosh London Ltd. and Creative Visual Media to develop the Spooky Investigations animated series (52x11-minutes), a spin-off of the Spooky Sisters.  The latter is a short-form series produced by Skaramoosh for Disney UK. Slated to be available for broadcast in 2010, Bejuba will serve as both exec producer and distributor of Spooky Investigations, while also seeking co-production partners and financing for the series.

HIT Entertainment and National Geographic Channel (NGC) in Latin America are working together to launch The Pingu Show in October.  This is the show's first appearance in the region.  NGC will air 26 episodes on weekends during its Nat Geo and Me preschooler block.

The U.S.' World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) is ready to open a can of whoop you-know-what with Mexico's TV Azteca following a deal between the two to bring WWE SmackDown to the company's Azteca 7 channel starting October 3.  It will then slip into its regular Friday 10p slot.

CROSS-MARKET:

Sigh!  ESPN will offer multiplatform coverage of the final game at Yankee Stadium (Baltimore at New York) in just a few days on September 21.  In addition to the telecast (available in high-def), ESPN's ESPN Deportes will air a series of specials including Beisbol Esta Noche (Baseball Tonight) at 6p, SportsCenter at 630p (live reports from the stadium) and Beisbol Esta Noche (730-815p).  On the global side, ESPN International will distribute the game to 108 countries.

HISPANIC MARKET:

On October 5 at 8p, the Los Zafiros/The Sapphires documentary will be broadcast with a special premiere on History en Espanol.  The 1970s Cuban pop band is a mix of Doo Wop, Afro-Cuban and traditional Latin forms.  During the month of October, the network will feature other special programs such as The Sugar Curtain and Act of Honor.

Nielsen Media Research's Top 10 Broadcast Spanish and English Language Primetime Program Live +SD ratings for the week of September 8-14, 2008 will be updated as soon as they are available.

LATAM MARKET:

Nickelodeon Latin America's October 13 lineup includes the series debut of La Maga y el Camino Dorado at 8p before the show falls into its regular weekday slot.  Based on the classic tale by L.F. Baum, the 3D show is a co-production between Nickelodeon Latin America, Illusion Studios and Dori Media Contenidos.

AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:

October 23 is the day for BET Networks's airing of its annual BET Hip Hop Awards.  Starting at 8p, the show will be hosted by Katt Williams with production done by Cossette Productions.  Lil' Wayne leads with a whole lot of nods, 12 nominations to be exact.  The award ceremony will take place on October 18 in Atlanta.

Logo's AfterEllen.com is taking over the TV for a short but on September 19 with the series premiere of Brunch with Bridget. The online video blog turned late-night series (6x30-minutes) with comedienne Bridget McManus will begin airing at 2a.  An uncut, unedited version of the episodes will arrive on the AfterEllen.com the following Sunday morning (regular day and time that Brunch with Bridget would air on the site).
