Good morning. It's Wednesday, September 17, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

Indie production house Baby Cow has birthed a new partner with BBC Worldwide acquiring a minority share. BBCW has been distributing the company's properties internationally for close to 9 years already.  This relationship will continue in addition to new initiatives created local productions.

Metronome's Friday TV and Meter Film & Television units have decided to ink an output agreement with Endemol France giving the latter access and exclusive rights to both companies' entire format catalogs.  Current and future shows are covered under the deal including Single Moms, Clash of the Choirs and Luxury Trap, among others.  The new partnership has already born fruit with Endemol France already beginning production of Single Moms for France's M6 channel.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM) is launching The MGM Channel on Indian cable TV through STAR DEN Media Services Pvt. Ltd.  The latter is a distribution joint venture between News Corp.'s STAR India and DEN Digital Entertainment Network.  Signed by MGM Programming Service India Pvt. Ltd., the deal has STAR DEN handling The MGM Channel distribution to cable platforms.  The network is currently available in India on satellite through Dish TV.

In Munich, SevenOne International doled out the Chinese distribution rights for Beat your Host! to Idea Asia Limited. With this new repping deal, the Raab TV and Brainpool-produced show will make its way into 13 countries.

Target Entertainment Group is quite interested in love with its newest international pickup (excluding the U.S. and U.K.) being the Loveland dating format, brought in from Standing Stone.  The show combines animation within a real-time studio show with contestants building their individual, computer-generated animated alter ego characters.  Love comes in when the characters go out on dates and choose who they like best.  Created for the U.K.'s Sky1, Loveland is also being localized by Fox for the U.S. market.

Green Inc. Film and Television picked up its fifth consecutive order to produce The Afternoon Show for another 220 hours for a debut this fall.  The flagship magazine series commission from RTE focuses on lifestyle, info and fun with hosts Sheana Keane and Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh.

Mondo Home Entertainment, Mediaset (Italy) with Italy-based Play Entertainment are co-producing and creating a 2D animated series based on the tween-targeted Angel's Friends, a comic magazine series created by Simona Ferri. MONDO TV S.p.a. will be the global distributor for the show, which will also be exec produced by MONDO TV s.p.a.'s animation team. The K7-13-targeted series will make its debut at next month's MIPCOM.

Porchlight Entertainment partnered with Chile's Pascualina Producciones to develop a 2D animated show based on the tween-targeted Pascualina diary book series created/illustrated by Paulina Monckeberg. Porchlight will serve as the international distributor for the K6-12 series, which will be produced at Porchlight's LA animation studio.

9 Story Entertainment signed broadcast deals in Canada with TVO and Knowledge Network for the new preschool-targeted animated series Wibbly Pig. Commissioned by Cbeebies, the show is built off of author/artist Mark Inkpen's picture books. A joint production with the U.K.'s Wish Films, Wibbly Pig is set for a spring 2009 delivery with the series being distributed by both 9Story and BBC Worldwide. The former will handle North American and Latin American distribution while BBCW takes over for all other international distribution.

HISPANIC MARKET:

TV Vision Network is a brand new channel making its way to Florida's Tampa Bay area as an English- and Spanish-language programming network geared towards all U.S. Hispanic age groups.  Founded by CEO Francisco Rios, the channel makes its premiere on Verizon FiOS TV.  Acquired and original high-def productions will run the genre gamut from lifestyle, music, global news, sports and films to children's shows.  In addition targeting the A18-49 and A25-54 demos, the channel will have select programming blocks geared towards A18-34, preschoolers and K6-11 DMAs.  Here's a look at some of TV Vision Network's original area programming ...
  • Project 1805 - A weekly music video countdown with English and Spanish music videos, celeb interviews, comedy sketches and more
  • El Mundo de Luisitin - Kids speak, sing and follow Luisitin's adventures in both languages with 2D and 3D animation
  • Total Action - An entertainment sports news show with the latest sports events in and around Tampa

LATAM MARKET:

As part of a new partnership between MTV Latin America, Nike and the Inter-American Development Bank's Youth program, the network will air a 30-minute special in November about raising awareness among Latin American youth through their social inclusion projects focused on sport.  The youth will gain the chance to be featured on the next edition of MTV Agents of Change.

EXECUTIVE MOVES:

Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) named Gunther Picker as GM. His charges include managing AXN and ANIMAX in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland.He comes over from Germany's Premiere Star.  Gunther's new position begins in October from a Munich base, reporting to Ross Hair, SPTI's EVP/International Networks.  His first mission will be to build subscriber growth and ad revenue at AXN.

ITV's Director/Entertainment and Comedy Paul Jackson is leaving his position at the end of 2008 to go back to his production roots.  The U.K. network has not yet made its decision on his replacement.  Names being thrown around include Elaine Bedell (BBC's Entertainment Controller) and John Kaye Cooper (ITV's Entertainment Controller).  Paul has been with the company since the beginning of 2006 after 5 years as MD of Granada Media Australia and CEO of Red Heart Productions.
