Cynopsis: International 08/20/08 Good morning. It's Wednesday, August 20, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: India's Reliance ADA Group has launched Reliance BIG TV Ltd, its new direct-to-home satellite TV operation with 202 networks on its MPEG4 platform. The figure includes 50 SVOD channels and 30 exclusive film networks. The company is also planning to bring in IPTV services in the country by the end of 2008. With the 25th Anniversary of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brand coming up in 2009 (yes, it has been that long!), 4Kids Entertainment, Inc. picked up repping duties for the new series, TMNT: Back to the Sewer. It will debut the show internationally at MIPCOM with sales already signed. In the U.K., cITV acquired 13x30-minute episodes for a 1Q2009 debut. Further deals have been inked with Alter (Greece), DRTV (Denmark), MTV3 (Finland), Children's Channel via UCOI (Israel), Indosiar (Indonesia) and RTE (Ireland). FremantleMedia Enterprises bought the global distribution rights (excluding Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea) to Australia-based Nine Network's new crime drama, The Strip (13x60-minutes). The New Wave Entertainment-produced is all set to premiere during primetime on Nine Network in late 2008. Fox Reality Channel's Gimme My Reality Show! has a distribution partner. Target Entertainment is coming on board to handle the show's format and finished episode licensing globally. Produced by Natural 9 Entertainment, it debuts October 11 on the channel. STAR Group, Balaji Telefilms Ltd. (BTL) and BTL's Promoters signed an agreement to terminate the deal signed by the three on August 18, 2004. STAR is selling its nearly 26% share in BTL. In addition, BTL and STAR's regional language joint venture deal, signed in April 2007, is also part of the termination agreement. HISPANIC MARKET: Sorpresa is set to launch the live-action Chilean tween/teen-targeted telenovelas series, Karku, on August 25 at 9p, as part of the network's back-to-school programming. Set in Santiago, Chile, the series follows several teen friends as they face the mileposts of growing up. Karku will air on Sorpresa Monday through Thursday at 9p. Telemundo's Levantate will bring in some a.m. fun to the network's lineup with hosts Alan Tacher (Quinceanera), Rashel Diaz (Decisiones de Mujeres) and Erika Garza (Descontrol) with host/comedian/impressionist, Raymond Arrieta popping his head in for specials as well. The 120-minute live show debuts on August 25 at 7a. Produced from Telemundo Puerto Rico, Levantate will include interaction via satellite from Telemundo's news bureaus in Mexico and its local stations in LA, New York and Miami. ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET: iaTV inked a program acquisition agreement and strategic ad sales deal with TOKYOPOP to have iaTV's ad sales team repping ad sales activities for TOKYOPOP's digital assets including its website, brand integration within original and user-generated video content, mobile advertising and other applications. iaTV acquired two Japanese anime series, Initial D (41x30-minutes) and Psychic Academy (8x30-minutes), and anime movie Spring and Chaos (1x60-minutes) from TOKYOPOP. Initial D will air weekdays at 530p and 11p PT starting September 1 while Psychic Academy comes into the Tuesday primetime A-Pop lineup at 1030p PT on September 9. The 3-4-minute short-form iManga series and the more hardcore FMW Wrestling (22x60-minutes) are arriving at iaTV with the latter airing Fridays at 10p PT as of September 12. EXECUTIVE MOVES: American Latino TV and LatiNation brought in two new execs along with promoting several from within. The syndication division named David Morales as VP/Business Development and Co-Executive Producer to manage new business and programming development for the unit as well as for LATV Networks' digital broadcast network. He comes to the company from his own entertainment company, Picante Pictures, which he founded in 2000. Fonda Anita joins as Executive in Charge of Production. She will be responsible for business and legal aspects of the division's productions. Dolly Romero, a former SiTV and Nickelodeon producer, joins the shows as West Coast Producer to manage American Latino TV and LatiNation's LA production team. As for promotions, former LatiNation Producer Jennifer Pons is now Supervising Producer of both syndicated weeklies. In addition to continuing to oversee the LatiNation's daily creative, Jennifer will work with Erica Soto, American Latino TV head writer/segment producer, who was promoted to Show Producer.
