It's Friday, August 15, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Jetix Europe N.V. signed an agreement with Pokemon USA Inc. to air season 11 of Pokemon on its channels across EMEA. Pokemon: Diamond & Pearl: Battle Dimension will launch in the U.K. on Jetix for the first time. As part of the deal, Jetix Europe gains the pay TV and TV VOD rights in certain territories for the 52x22-minute series. Asia's ESPN STAR Sports inked a long-term deal for the exclusive multi-platform right to broadcast TNA Wrestling, including on TV, mobile and internet. It covers the Indian subcontinent including India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Maldives. ESPN STAR Sports will air a programming lineup starting in September that includes TNA iMPACT! and TNA Xplosion every week. Debmar-Mercury acquired the rights to Standing Stone Prods.' Hot Seat, a new reality/game show format. It will offer the program's primetime and daily editions to broadcasters and stations with the London-based Debmar-Mercury International handling international distribution while Standing Stone retains the U.K. rights. Did you know that one-third of the earth (people of course) watched the Olympics' opening ceremony? Two billion folks tuned in with over half of Asia's viewers watching, especially in China with a 63% share and 44% in South Korea, according to Nielsen and its international partners. Other viewer percentages include North America with 24%, Europe with 30%, Australia with 43% and Greece with 44%. AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET: A new African American-focused network is on the horizon. Percy Miller (aka Master P) is launching the new Better Black Television (BBTV) in 2009 as a family-friendly general entertainment network. The hip hop businessman will serve as its chairman and CEO. BBTV's programming will cover both scripted and unscripted content and news across various genres such as drama, comedy, films, animation, reality, politics and much more. LATAM MARKET: Nickelodeon Latin America has begun filming its first original telenovela series for tweens, Isa TKM (Te Quiero Mucho). The co-production with Sony Pictures Television International is being produced in Venezuela with local talent and customized in Portuguese for Nickelodeon Brazil. Beginning September 29, the show is set to air weekdays at 7p. EXECUTIVE MOVES: Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) brought in Eddie Nelson as GM/Central Europe, based in Budapest. The ex-SPTI consultant will manage the development of SPTI's four channel brands in the region, AXN, AXN Crime, AXN SCI-FI and Animax. Eddie reports to Tom Davidson, SPTI's VP/International Networks.
