Cyn opsis: International 08/11/08 Good morning. It's Monday, August 11, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: In a few months time, African audiences will experience an MTV Networks Africa music awards ceremony just for them. The 120-minute MTV Africa Music Awards event will air live from Nigeria on November 22 as part of the channel's 3-year sponsorship agreement with Yemen's Zain telecom company. In previous MTV events, African artists were acknowledged in categories within global award events. This first time around, the ceremony will air internationally on MTV as well as on its radio, mobile and internet platforms, including MTV Base, MTV2, STV, AIT, TBC and TV3. Project Kangaroo hit another barrier and may be prevented for hopping for a bit more time. The BBC Worldwide, ITV and Channel 4 joint venture is seeing the U.K. Competition Commission postponing its investigation deadline due to an alleged lack of relevant info provided by Project Kangaroo's partners. The initial reporting date was scheduled for December 14, which now means that the conclusions will most likely not be unveiled until mid-January 2009 if the info is submitted by next month. Diva TV and Hallmark Channel have cloned themselves into two new time-shifted networks in the U.K. on Sky and Virgin Media's platforms. The NBC Universal Global Networks airs dramas on Hallmark Channel while Diva TV is all about The Bold & The Beautiful, Oprah, Secret Lives of Women and more. Dori Media Group extended its agreement with Israel's HOT cable platform to continue carriage for its VIVA and VIVA Platina telenovela TV channels. Taking effect January 1, 2009, the deal will be in place for 3 years with HOT retaining the right to exit the agreement after 2 years. Fox International Channels made its first buy of a show intended to go straight for an internet-based broadcast. The Endemol-produced The Cell will air on the network's websites as of October as a 20x2-minute drama series. It originally aired on the U.K.'s O2 mobile operator and Sony's www.Crackle.com in the U.S., per THR. Beyond Distribution has been named as the global distributor of a collection of new VH1 and LOGO titles. The slate, which will launch at MIPCOM, includes The Cho Show, S#x: The Revolution, Transamerican Love Story and The Big Gay Sketch Show. In London, MTV is working with the Vodafone mobile community to launch of a new multi-platform program, Vodafone Soundbites on TV at www.mtv-vodafonesoundbites.com and on mobile at wap.mtv-vodafonesoundbites.com. The series of 21x3-minute shows beginning this month will feature behind-the-scenes content such as interviews from international gigs and festivals, bands' fantasy group lineups, pre-show rituals and more. It will be available in seven languages on MTV in Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey, the UK and Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and on the MTV European feed. Both the website and mobile service will carry additional footage. Westman Communications Group in Canada is the latest to add High Fidelity HDTV's 4 high-def channels in the city of Brandon in Manitoba. The channels are Oasis HD, Equator HD, Treasure HD and Rush HD. CROSS-MARKET: Bernie Mac passed away this past weekend on Saturday from complications connected to pneumonia at the age of 50. The actor and comedian, famous for Fox's The Bernie Mac Show and roles in Ocean's Eleven, its sequels, Transformers, Guess Who and much more, was also well-known for being part of The Original Kings of Comedy tour and documentary. He picked up two Emmy and two Golden Globe nominations for The Bernie Mac Show. This pneumonia-related hospitalization in Chicago was not tied to his previous fight against sarcoidosis, which had been in remission for 3 years. Bernie will appear posthumously in the Soul Men and Old Dogs features. In Fox and 20th Century Fox TV's words, "Bernie Mac was a gifted talent whose comedy came from an authentic and highly personal place. He was a tremendous live performer and a wonderful actor." AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET: On TV One, Judge Greg Mathis looks at urban America reflected through two cities with large working-class African American populations, Newark, NJ and Oakland, CA. The 60-minute Mean Streets: Cities Under Fire will air on August 24 at 9p. LATAM MARKET: In 5 days, MTV Latin America will debut its original docu-reality series La Zona de Combate: La Ultima Batalla spotlighting the 3 remaining bands in the pan-regional La Zona de Combate contest.
