It's Monday, August 4, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: After a 4-year TV production company buying hiatus, Ten Alps has made a purchase. Films of Record, a nearly 30-year old U.K. indie factual house founded by Roger Graef, was picked up with its toppers, Jane Bevan and Nick Poyntz, heading over to Ten Alps' Brook Lapping and Blakeway units. Films of Record documentaries include Searching for Madeleine, Malaria, After The Break and many others. The purchase amount was undisclosed. Another U.K.er, ITV, acquired a 10% share in Electric Farm Entertainment (EFE) through ITV's Granada America production company. In addition to the stake buy, Granada America will look into working with EFE on internet video content for its U.S. brands such as Nanny 911 and Hell's Kitchen. Asia's SingTel telecom company is bringing in the BabyFirst kids development network carriage. The channel will launch in Singapore on SingTel's digital pay TV service mio TV. Mouth to Mouth (wt) has been requested by BBC Three from Avalon Television. The comedy/drama, about a girl group's 3 members and their ups and downs, will debut later in 2008 on the TV channel with mobile and web components as well. The animated Claude series, based on David Wojtowycz's illustrated books about a little polar bear, will air on the U.K.'s Playhouse Disney this year after the channel acquired the 52x10-minute British preschool-targeted show. The Dot To Dot and Red and Blue Productions series is also traveling to Germany with ZDF while ZDF Enterprises handles the international distribution. Pay TV channels will not be allowed on Spain's new digital terrestrial TV platform. However, the country's deputy prime minister, Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega, did state that plans were in the works to create new regulations as part of a new Broadcasting Act. Opposition had been raised about the pay TV possibilities by current operators, citing audience fragmentation issues, according to Variety. CROSS-MARKET: Dish Network has discontinued carriage of the bilingual GolTV soccer channel as of August 1 following contract and term breakdowns. Several other Citadel stations were also dropped by Dish. The channel, which will soon air the Emirates Cup, Spain's La Liga, Germany's Bundesliga and 2010 World Cup qualifying matches, was carried on Dish's America's Top 250 and Dish Latino programming packages. HISPANIC MARKET: MTV Tr3s' MTV Tr3s Fashionista returns to the network with its premiere on August 16 at 2p with hosts Natalie Martinez and VJ L.Boogs and correspondent Karli Henriquez. Taped in front of a live studio audience, the show will bring in celeb models and show off the Fall 2008 looks and designers. Discovery Network en Espanol's airing of La Cirugia me Salvo (Surgery Saved My Life) and Diagnostico Reservado (Life or Death) brought in rank for the network on July 26 at 9 and 10p. Among W18-49, the network came in at #2 and #1 with the programs with 27,000 and 36,000 viewers and ratings of 26 and 35, respectively. For households, the #3 and #2 spot were had with 40 and 43 shares and 49,000 and 52,000 HHs. EXECUTIVE MOVES: Neil Ross Russell was named as MD/Children's for BBC Worldwide as of August 11, taking over from Gill Pritchard. He is presently consulting for the company. The former Sparrowhawk exec launched Movies 24 and Diva as well as created KidsCo with DIC Entertainment and Nelvana. Ross will now be in charge of Doctor Who and CBeebies' In The Night Garden and Charlie and Lola' global multi-media rights. He reports to Peter Phippen, MD/BBC Magazines. In addition to Ross' position, BBC Worldwide has brought in Helen Kellie as its first Director/Marketing, reporting to CEO John Smith. She will take up marketing and audience research growth for the company. She moves to this job from her prior position as Director/Marketing, Communications and Audiences at BBC Vision. In France, TF1 chairman Patrick Le Lay has stepped down with Director General Nonce Paolini taking over in the new chairman-CEO position.
