Good morning. It's Wednesday, July 30, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

VOOM HD Networks entered into its second global carriage agreement for its RUSH extreme sports/action channel with Germany's Kabel BW cable operator (Kabel Baden Wurttemberg GmbH & Co. KG, Heidelberg).  It will be in the new Pay-TV-Package with its 2.3 million available homes.  The deal was brokered by Chello Zone.

Canada's Breakthrough Films & Television expanded its TV movie division to include more original development and production.  The company will continue with its domestic and international co-production partnerships in addition to going after acquisitions and format development while handling the international sales and pre-sales for all the properties. The first development project out of the expansion gate will be Shadow Island Mysteries, a run of TV films taking place on the same island.

Eurocinema has picked up carriage with DIRECTV with the launch set for later this week on August 1 on the DIRECTV-on-Demand platform.

The Travel Channel is bringing more haunted to U.S. homes following its acquisition of the finished and format rights to the U.K's Most Haunted from Target Entertainment.  The finished series pickup, produced by Manchester-based Antix Productions, is the 20x60-minute season 10.  As for the 8-episode U.S. version, Antix will co-produce the series with Travel Channel and Virgin Media TV as well as a 120-minute, live Most Haunted event with both airing first in the autumn on Travel and then on the U.K.'s Living.

In the fall, Astral Media's The Movie Network (eastern Canada) and Corus Entertainment's Movie Central (western Canada) will add on a new bunch of HBO (all debuting day-and-date with the U.S. network) and Showtime programming to their Sunday and Monday night lineups. Shows showing up include a September 7 kickoff with HBO of Entourage's season 5 debut at 830p, followed by the new True Blood vampire drama series.  On September 28, HBO's new 30-minute The Life & Times of Tim comedy and season 3 of Showtime's Dexter (season 3) will appear on Sunday night's roster.  Monday's will get Showtime's Californication back for a second run on September 29 at 9p along with HBO's new 30-minute Little Britain USA comedy in the 930p slot.

Octapixx is the new international distribution rights holder of the 30-minute claymation animated The Little Crooked Christmas Tree holiday special, narrated by Christopher Plummer.

Brit distributor Portman Film and Television sold the local Spain rights for Doc Martin, originally on ITV1, to Antena 3.  Production has started on 8 of the 23 episodes set to air this year on the terrestrial channel's primetime lineup.  In addition, Germany's ZDF bought the second run rights for its Doktor Martin local version, which is being produced by Phoenix Film & Television for a Spring 2009 premiere.

In a little cross-border dealing organized by Alchemy Television, Canada's CBC and the U.S.' ABC are partnering on a new show titled 18 to Life (18-year-old newlywed couple trying to make it work).  The networks acquired the rights to the 30-minute comedy for their respective territories.  Galafilm, based in Montreal, will develop and produce the show.

HISPANIC MARKET:

American Latino TV and LatiNation brought in additional affiliate renewals for the shows' respective season 7 and 5 premieres taking place the week of September 29.

On August 4 at 9p, Dona Barbara will make her way to Telemundo's broadcasting lineup.  The storyline first made its appearance as a novel, followed by a film and recently as a telenovela.  Starring Mexico's Edith Gonzalez, it is a co-production between Telemundo and Sony Pictures Television International, developed by RTI.

With the Olympics starting next week, Discovery en Espanol will air several programs highlighting China as part of a 4-hour block on August 3 from 7-11p.  The Pre-Olympic China Spectacular starts with Discovery Atlas: China Revealed, followed by Genghis Khan and Behind the Great Wall.

Telemundo's telecast of Titanic on Cine Millionario on July 27 brought the network the top Spanish-language broadcast network spot for Persons 2+ (2,209,000), A18-49 (1,395,000), A18-34 (901,000) and other key demos.  For the night itself, Telemundo saw its best Sunday prime performance in NTI with an average 839,000 A18-49 for the month.

Among other top programming positions on Nielsen's NTI ratings rankings for the 7/21-28 week, Univision saw its Friday night debut Viva la Familia! de Todobebe (Hooray for Families! from Todobebe)bring in 1.1 million A18-34 for the top spot in the 10-11p slot.For the weekday 8-9p hour, Al Diablo Con Los Guapos (Down with the Beautiful) helped the network to a #1 position for A18-34 (1.5 million), A18-49 (2.5 million) and Teens (367,000).

EXECUTIVE MOVES:

As part of its TV movie unit's expansion, Breakthrough Films & Television has upped Marina Cordoni to Head/Sales and Business Development, Theatrical and TV movies. She will oversee film script acquisition, original TV movie development and production and international distribution of original and acquired productions. Marina started with the company 2 years ago as a Sales Agent.
