Good morning. It's Monday, July 28, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

MGM Networks has a new initiative in the works to grow its The MGM Channel's TV distribution to mobile subscribers, with the first move being a deal with Vodafone in Germany. This follows a soft launch in June.

Xilam Animation in France has more business in the Eastern European market following up on June's Discop.  Oggy And The Cockroaches goes to Lithuania's LNK in (seasons 1-3) and Russia's VGTRK (seasons 2-3) while the home video rights went CD Land for Russia (seasons 1-3) and North Video for the Czech Republic and Slovenia (season 1).  Poland's Kartunz and Romania's Millennium Trading inked for Shuriken School's (Jetix) home video rights.  In addition, Disney's channels in Poland and Serbia bought It's a Kind of Magic.

Six movies from Sundance Channel's upcoming Asia Extreme season will become available on Sundance Channel On Demand as of August 1, one month before the new season's linear channel debut.  Old Boy, Re-cycle, The President's Last Bang, The Red Shoes, will be available in high-def as well as standard-def and The Maid and The Ghost of Mae-Nek will be available in standard-def.

MTV South Europe is looking to reach out to young folks not only in their homes but also in their hostels as they travel with plans to develop a branded hostel network, according to Advanced Television.  The network is reportedly looking around for partners.

Digital Rights Group's companies were quite busy pulling in post-DISCOP deals ...
  • The U.K.'s C4i is bringing a programming package to Polsat for its lifestyle channels, including all series and specials for the Brat Camp (23x50-minutes total) and Brat Camp USA (7x50-minutes).  C4i also sold the 60-minute Undercover in Tibet documentary from True Vision Productions to 15 broadcasters, including in Korea (Educational Broadcasting System), Taiwan (Public Service Television), Australia (ABC), Brazil (Globo Sat), Sweden (SVT), Poland (Telewizja Polska), Denmark (DR), Norway (NRK), Switzerland (Television Suisse Romande), French-speaking Canada (Societe Radio Canada), Germany (ARD1), Estonia (Estonian Television), Israel (DBS), Austria (ORF) and Greece (broadcaster to be confirmed).
  • ID Distribution inked several sales in Budapest, including a human interest documentary package to Poland's Polsat¸ also for its lifestyle channels. The 60-minute shows include Mums Who Leave Their Kids, Alexis Arquette: She's My Brother, Three In A Bed, Swimsuit Secrets Revealed and other documentaries.
  • Digiturk Turkey is taking three series with Nigella Lawson - Nigella Feasts (13x30-minutes), Nigella Express (13x30-minutes) and Nigella (20x30-minutes) while Estonia's Kanal 11 took the first two series and BBC Entertainment has season 4 of The Real Hustle (10x30-minutes) and two series of Eataholics (15x30-minutes) for its Polish channel. The Real Hustle also went as a format for Russia through Red Planet for a 15-episode production.
  • Zeal Entertainment's The Singing Bee format buzzed in productions in Portugal by Endemol for SIC and Romania and by ProTV S.A for ProTv Romania. Additional episodes or second runs were taken in Australia (Nine Network), Chile (Canal 13), Finland (MTV3), Hungary (TV2), Norway (TV3), The Philippines (ABS), Portugal (SIC), Spain (Antena 3), Sweden (TV3) and Turkey (Show TV).

SingTel signed an agreement with three major studios, Disney-ABC International Television, Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Bros. International Television Distribution, for its mio TV service to air more than 50 U.S. series as soon as 24 hours after the shows' U.S. premiere.  The SingTel service, Season Pass, has a September launch planned.

HISPANIC MARKET:

ION Media Networks, Inc.'s bilingual qubo kiddie TV and online entertainment service has picked up carriage in Boston with RCN Corporation.

AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:

BET decided Kevin Hart has enough of the funnies to host Comic View.  In addition, the network also produced a pilot for a reality show (I Ain't Scared) with the comedian.  That's not all for Kevin as he also is becoming part of the cast of Comedy Central's new Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire show.  The newly revamped The Comic View is being renamed as Comic View: One Mic Stand, per Variety.

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

here! will spring the second, 9-episode run of its The Lair supernatural series on September 5.

EXECUTIVE MOVES:

Corus Entertainment Inc. has a few senior management changes in the works. As of September 2, 2008, John Cassaday will add on additional responsibilities to his current position as President and CEO by taking on operations for Corus Radio on an interim basis.  The change follows on the heels of the recent announcement about John Hayes' stepping down as Corus Radio' President as of August 31.  Mario Cecchini, Chris Pandoff, Doug Rutherford and Bryan Ellis will become VP for Quebec, Ontario, the West and Planning, respectively, with all reporting to John.  Doug will continue to oversee Edmonton Radio with all cluster GMs across Canada reporting to the appropriate Regional VP.  Effective August 5, Scott Dyer will be Corus Entertainment's CTO, also reporting to John.  He will oversee both the company's divisional and corporate technology.  On the same date, Doug Murphy will also come in as President/Nelvana and EVP and GM/Corus Kids, reporting to Paul Robertson, Corus Television's President. Doug will be in charge of kids internationally, including YTV, Treehouse, Discovery Kids, Nelvana, KidsCo, qubo and Kids Can Press.

Two new names were named at London's Cineflix International LtdRights Manager Claire Lowe comes to the company from her prior position at National Geographic Television International as Business Affairs Manager. She will collaborate with the sales and legal teams as well as the Dublin office on rights agreements and strategies.  In addition, Cineflix International named Lucinda Garner as Sales Manager/U.S. and English-speaking Canada. Based in Toronto, she will manage completed program sales across all media for those territories.  She was previously with the BBC for 12 years.

News of the last week ...
While Cynopsis International was on vacation last week (Ariana's excellent New England adventure), several top international/multicultural TV industry news stories were announced.  Here are some of the snippets from the week ...
  • Off the Fence inked a 5-year first-look output agreement with Canada's High Fidelity HDTV broadcaster.
  • MTV Networks International launched Nickelodeon Arabia as the network's 50th global channel. The K2-14-targeted, Arabic-language channel will be available on Arabsat and Nilesat.
  • Alfred Haber Distribution, Inc. inked a new 3-year distribution deal with K2 Communications for the distribution of 38 films originally produced for IMAX and other large screen theatres.
  • FremantleMedia Enterprises named Richard Tulk-Hart, formerly TWI/IMG Media's Head/Sales and Business Development, EMEA, as its London-based VP/Sales, Home Entertainment, EMEA, reporting to Pete Kalhan, SVP/Home Entertainment and Archive Sales.
  • Sony Pictures Television International's Dragons' Den format has been licensed to 3 more markets. In Ireland, it will be produced by Screentime ShinAwiL for RTE and in Sweden by Silverback for SVT while in the Czech Republic, Dragons' Den will air on and be produced by Czech Television.
  • AETN All Asia Networks Pte Ltd, an A&E Television Networks/ASTRO All Asia Entertainment Networks Limited joint venture, and now TV launched The Biography Channel in Hong Kong on July 21.
  • Entertainment Rights Plc's Postman Pat debuted on China's China Central Television in addition to picking up orders for the new Postman Pat - Special Delivery Service with other broadcasters.
  • Televisa signed an agreement to produce content for Brazil's TV Record broadcaster potentially for its primetime 7p slot.
  • TV5MONDE is in a year-long partnership with Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF)to be a major sponsor of SIFF Cinema, part of which includes free installations and free 3-month subscriptions from July 20-August 31.
  • France's Xilam Animation producer has gone into production on a new short-form sitcom titled Mr Baby, geared towards families.
  • CBeebies debuted Northern Ireland's Sesame Tree on BBC Two on July 21 and will premiere it on CBeebies Channel as of August 4.
  • V-me will air the U.S. premiere of the controversial, 6-part Italian drama Corleone in a Monday 10p slot from August 4 through September 8.
  • CaribeVision Television Group is the broadcaster of the Atlante Soccer Club's local soccer games with the action kicking off this past weekend on Saturday at 10p.
  • FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) is working with BBC One on a new fantasy drama titled Merlin.  John Hurt, Santiago Cabrera and Michelle Ryan have been announced as the main actors.  FME is the exclusive distribution, licensing and home entertainment (excluding U.K.) rights holder to the 13x60-minute series created and produced by Shine Television for a September debut. FME also already pre-sold the series to the U.S.' NBC and Canada's CTV.
  • Disney-ABC ESPN Television renewed its multi-year volume deal with Greece's ERT public TV broadcaster for a variety of content to be aired on both terrestrial TV and DTT.  The content comes from Disney's producers such as Disney Channel, The Walt Disney Studios and ABC Studios.
  • Shaftesbury Films began production on season 2 of its Murdoch Mysteries (13x60-minutes) drama for a Spring 2009 debut on Citytv.
