It's Thursday, July 10, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Less than one month before the Olympics begin, global broadcasters have finally been given the go ahead by the Chinese government to broadcast live via satellite from other Beijing and co-host city locations besides the sports arena used for the Olympics. Limited access will be given Tiananmen Square from 6-10a and 9-11p for rights holders only with television crews only allowed to pre-record content in the Square. National Geographic Channels International (NGCI) now has the international premiere rights for the 13-episode Monkey Thieves series outside of France from Off the Fence Productions. In addition, NGCI picked up 6 new episodes of Michael Hoff Production's Super Factories from Off the Fence with the two series debuting in August and later in July, respectively. Other NGCI buys include SuperCarrier (2x60-minutes) and Flight of the Elephants (1x60-minutes) while Nat Geo Wild took 30 hours of programming such as Wild Asia (9x60-minutes), Scavengers of the Sea (1x60-minutes), Animal Inventors (3x60-minutes), Caught Barehanded (1x60-minutes) and Fishzilla (1x60-minutes). Competition may just pick up if Argentina goes through with its plans half the amount of broadcast licenses a company can own. The current regulations are set for 24 with the big three in the country, Grupo Clarin, Grupo Uno and Telefonica (Spain), owning the majority. The proposed changes will also concern broadcasting definition from a service to a business, per Variety. The bills on the table are based on U.S. legislation. IMG Sports Media has been named by the conferences and universities that participate in the Bowl Championship Series as the exclusive international media rights rep for the series that begins in 2011. Up in Canada, Astral Media's Family Channel is going Hannah crazy with the broadcast of Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert 3D on July 26 at 8p, day and date with the U.S.' Disney Channel. CROSS-MARKET: The Major League Baseball All-Star coverage on ESPN from Yankee Stadium (last season at the old ballpark - can you believe it has arrived?) will be shown on ESPN Deportes and ESPN International, among other ESPN platforms. On July 14 at 8p, it will air a live presentation of the 2008 State Farm Home Run Derby. There will be a preview to the event at 730p on ESPN Deportes and the Spanish-language network will also televise the Futures Game live. Both ESPN Radio and ESPN Deportes Radio will broadcast the 79th All-Star Game on July 15 at 8p while Joe D'Ambrosio comes in to host pre- and post-game shows. ESPN International will have live coverage of the All-Star Game and Futures Game on its networks broadcasting in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and New Zealand. Coverage of the Home Run Derby will also be made available in these regions, plus Australia. NASN will air the All-Star Game to 43 countries throughout Europe. HISPANIC MARKET: History en Espanol will air a special set in the Wild West era about what happened to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid after they fled the U.S. Butch Cassidy in Patagonia, an Anima Films production, debuts on July 13 at 8p. In its season-to-date, Galavision posted increases among A18-49 in both Prime (+9%) and Total Day (+6%), according to Nielsen, reaching over 11 million A18+ viewers. LATAM MARKET: ESPN and ESPN Publishing inked a deal with Mexico's Grupo GW magazine publisher to launch ESPN The Magazine Mexico. The new monthly, Spanish-language version of ESPN The Magazine is being customized, produced and distributed by Grupo GW with locally relevant content with the debut issue out on newsstands this week in Mexico. It will be headed up by Linda Alexander as EVP/Corporate Communications, who is taking on additional communications and public affairs responsibilities for MTVN Latin America. She will continue to be based in Miami and report to Bill Roedy, MTVNI's CEO/Chairman, and Bob Bakish, MTVNI's President. The team will work with other divisions including channel services, ad sales, digital media, consumer products, programming, public affairs and events such as The MTV Europe Music Awards and Nickelodeon's Kid's Choice Awards. Linda will collaborate with MTVN U.S., Viacom and international communication teams. In addition to the current MTVNI Corporate Communications team of AnneMarie Kane (New York-based VP) and Bob Seely (London-based Director), Seema Alibhai and Sandra Lee join as MTVNI's Directors/Corporate Communications in London and New York, respectively. Sandra create media strategies for MTVNI including international programming and events, digital media, corporate responsibility and research and serve as MTVNI's communications liaison for Viacom and MTVN US. She comes to the company from Thomson Reuters. Seema, a former 10-year CNN International exec, will take on media and communications campaigns for MTVNI's business and creative projects, corporate responsibility and internal communications. The Italian American Network (I A NET) brought in Patrick J. Peters as its first SVP/Business Development and Marketing. The announcement was made today by Italian American Network's CEO, Tony Ceglio. Patrick's experience includes 33 years in exec positions at Unilever, including SVP/North American Home and Personal Care Company. He is presently an Advisory Board member of Effective Brands. Jene Elzie has been upped to VP/International Sales and Strategic Planning for Comcast International Media Group (CIMG), reporting to SVP Duccio Donati. She will manage the London program sales division overseeing distribution of all the CIMG programming in Europe, Middle East and Africa in addition to the company's Latin America, ancillary and in-flight sales units. She will collaborate with CIMG's Hong Kong and work on growing the CIMG brands globally, with a particular focus on The Golf Channel and The Style Network.
