Cynopsis: International
07/08/08

Good morning. It's Tuesday, July 8, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

Entertainment One (E1) went on a bit of a buying spree of late.  The Canadian entertainment content owner/distributor acquired three TV content suppliers, including the LA-based Blueprint Entertainment and Toronto's Barna-Alper Productions and Oasis International.  E1 also inked a deal at the same time to buy Robert Lantos' Maximum Films international and Canadian distribution units, International Film Sales and Canadian Film Distribution, to merge with its Seville Pictures. All will become part of E1's Filmed Entertainment Division, joining other purchased corps such as the U.K.'s Contender Entertainment Group and Holland/Belgium's RCV Entertainment. (But, wait, there's more ... E1's board is seriously contemplating a dual-listing on the Main List in London and the Toronto Stock Exchange this financial year.)  Although the price tag was not announced, the acquisition will mainly consist of shares with cash involved as well. What will all these purchases bring E1?  In the end, the company will have international rights to 9,300+ hours of programming and Canadian, U.S., U.K., Holland and Belgium-based distribution units and libraries.  Oasis International will handle TV content distribution and all Blueprint and Barna-Alper content internationally while E1's own Seville Pictures will take on theatrical.  All of the 4 acquired companies' top execs will take on leadership roles at E1 except for Maximum Films' Robert Lantos, who will join E1's board of directors.  He will be producing films with his Serendipity Point Films (SPF) with E1 retaining the Canadian theatrical distribution rights to all SPF movies and international rights for some.  (See exec moves section below for the other toppers.)

Military History will launch in the U.K. and Ireland on July 28 on Sky Digital following a deal between A&E Television Networks, British Sky Broadcasting and The History Channel (UK).  The channel, operated by The History Channel (UK), will air both U.K. and international military history programming with new series such as Jetstream.  The 8x60-minute show tags along with pilots learning to fly fighter aircrafts.  This will be the channel's first linear travel outside of the U.S.

U.K. gaming channel PULSE is all set to kick out with a new branded block titled Martial Arts TV.  The program series will be martial arts-focused, of course, with Thai Kick Boxing as the first up.  The channel also airs the multi-platform XLEAGUE.TV, Cultra films and male-targeted MAV TV.  There is a possibility that the block may be expanded to be a standalone channel in the future.

This August in Tokyo, the Star Channel foreign film network will relaunch as a new company utilizing the current broadcasting station's license and subscribers.  The move, approved by Star Channel's top 4 shareholders, is attributed to its growing losses according to Variety.  The new company will not take on the debt but rather the old 22-year old Star Channel will work to get rid of it after the split.  U.S. studios that together own 20% of the old company's stock include Paramount and Sony with the movies airing come from the latter two as well as Fox, MGM, Universal and Warner.  All will continue to supply the new channel but will not be shareholders.

There will be more drama in Eastern Europe with ALL3MEDIA International's newly signed deals in Poland and Serbia.  Dexin Film of Serbia picked up 80 hours, including Company Pictures' George Gently (in post production), Ecosse Films' He Kills Coppers, two Outrageous Fortune series from South Pacific Pictures and several documentaries such as Lion Television's China trilogy.  Poland's Tele5 has Lime Pictures' Bonkers, Company Picture's Ghost Squad and Wild at Heart, Outrageous Fortune and all Ultimate Force seasons.

The MoonScoop Group's Taffy Entertainment, with distribution assistance from Canada's HOLA Entertainment, sold a few series in Latin America. The Fantastic Four has been acquired by Costa Rica's Canal 7 Teletica, Trinidad's TV6 and Ecuador's Ecuavisa. It continues to air on Cartoon Network Latin America, Brazil's TV Globo and Chile's TVN, among others.  Code Lyoko went to TV6 and Ecuavisa while other deals included the Insectoscope kids' documentary series going to Ecuador's Tevecuador and Dive Olly Dive! to Ecuavisa and CBC Barbados.  The latter also bought Creepie.

Cricket galore ... ESPN Star Sports has entered into an 8-year broadcast deal with Arab Digital Distribution in the Middle East and North Africa for International Cricket Council events through 2015.  The multi-platform agreement, which includes TV, internet and mobile, will the 2011 and 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, among many other events. The many countries involved in the deal include Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

So is ITV on the sales block again?  Speculation is in the air as to whether the U.K. commercial broadcaster is up for grabs with a Competition Appeal Tribunal ruling expected next week about BSkyB's 17.9% stake in ITV.  The Competition Commission and Secretary of State's offices had ruled BSkyB's stake needed to be equal or less than 7.5%.  So, once again, who might be a potential buyer?  Italy's Mediaset, Germany's RTL, Haim Saban and several private equity groups are reportedly interested.

HISPANIC MARKET:

Telemundo Communications Group and GMC are partnering up for a new digital GMC Sierra road trip with Yahoo! Telemundo. The multi-screen, multi-platform, branded entertainment project will center on an original digital series, Gol de Media Cancha (The Longshot), launching this August.  The 12-episode "reality series" airing via broadband also includes teaming up with the pro soccer Miami FC team to follow 8 aspiring soccer players cut during the Miami club's tryouts. The best player of the bunch will earn a pro contract with Miami FC.

Azteca America will premiere Pasiones Prohibidas (Forbidden Passions) on July 16 at 9p with The Making of Pasiones Prohibidas preceding the debut on July 14 at 8p.  The weekday show will then slip into its regular 10p slot.  Produced by Brazil's TV Bandeirantes, the novela is set in Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro in the 1800's about two lovers torn by family rivalry.

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

Season 6 of Logo's gay documentary series, Real Momentum, will debut on August 2 at 8p with the international debut of Bear Run.  The documentary looks at the "bear" sub-culture and the men that love them within the LGBT community. (In case you were wondering, as I was, bears are defined as "big, hairy, friendly and affectionate guys.")  Other documentaries in the series include Tying the Knot, Roxy: The Last Dance and Jake's Adventures in Dollyworld.  The content is also available on iTunes, other download-to-own services and www.LOGOonline.com .

EXECUTIVE MOVES:

In Brussels, the European Broadcasting Union dubbed Jean-Paul Philippot as President, He takes over in the 2-year term position from ARD's Fritz Pleitgen starting in 2009. Peace Arch Entertainment Group Inc. has a new CEO in Gerry Noble.  As of July 21, he will replace interim CEO Jeff Sagansky.  Jeff will continue on as Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors with Drew Craig.  He was most recently President/CEO of the U.S.-based Transit TV Network, a unit of Canada's Torstar Corporation. Based in Toronto, Gerry will work with the company's LA-based President/COO John Flock.

Here's Entertainment One's (E1) breakdown for the execs it will integrate into its operations following its 4-company buy.
