Good morning. It's Tuesday, June 3, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

News Corp.
has picked up the final 30% of Latvia's TV Riga that it did not previously own.  The free-to-air network becomes the second fully-owned Latvian network for News Corporation European Television with its 100% ownership of the LNT entertainment channel.

TV Globo and SIC have renewed their partnership deal for another four years, giving SIC's exclusive broadcast rights to all of Globo's new telenovelas produced up to 2012. No other types of content or dramas are included in the agreement.

New Zealand's MediaWorks NZ re-inked its programming deal with 20th Century Fox Television Distribution to continue to bring content to MediaWorks' TV3 and C4 networks.  The two companies first signed back in 2000.

Germany's TV-Loonland and Canada's CarpeDiem Film & TV have started up production on the K8-12-targeted My Life Me for Canada's TELETOON and France's France 2 and Canal J.  Global distribution rights across all media for the 52x11-minute digital animated series will be handled by TV-Loonland.  With its debut scheduled for Fall 2009, the digital series will also have 26 original shorts produced for other platforms such as VOD and mobile.

In the U.K., Disney Channel has ordered a new sketch comedy production from Prism Entertainment for airing later in 2008.  Life Bites, aimed at the tween crowd, will follow two sibling's adventures as a 16x5-minute series with themed episodes.

Canada's CTV announced its Fall 2008 primetime schedule with seven new series being added to the lineup on CTV and A (formerly A-Channel). The new shows are as follows ...

  • Flashpoint (CTV) - A Canadian-produced series to be simulcast with CBS about an elite team of police
  • The Listener (CTV) - Another Canadian-produced series airing on the U.S.'s NBC and in 175 other countries tracing the life of a young man with the ability to read minds
  • So You Think You Can Dance Canada (CTV) - The Canadian version of the format
  • Fringe (A) - A sci-fi mystery/drama from Lost's J.J. Abrams
  • Eleventh Hour (A) - A Jerry Bruckheimer drama about biology in the wrong hands
  • The Mentalist (A) - A man using his extraordinary observational skills to solve crimes
  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars (CTV) - A new Lucasfilm Animation series about that Star Wars galaxy
  • The first projects on CTV's development slate for the 2008/09 season include a pilot for a new comedy series from Corner Gas's Brent Butt, the daytime series The Marilyn Denis Show and a new season of Canada's Next Top Model (A). CTV music/talk series Spectacle is also currently in production and will debut premiere later in 2008.
  • Other returning shows include American Idol, Grey's Anatomy, Corner Gas (sixth and final season), CSI: Miami and numerous other U.S. shows, original CTV movies and more.


CROSS-MARKET:

The 2008 NBA Finals will take off in two days time on June 5 at 9p on ABC, ABC HD, ESPN Radio and ESPN International with coverage on a slew of other ESPN platforms, including ESPN Deportes, ESPN Deportes Radio and
www.ESPNdeportes.com .  ESPN International will air The Finals on ESPN Pacific Rim (Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands), ESPN Latin Brazil (Brazil) and ESPN Atlantic (Sub-Saharan Africa including South Africa). ESPN Latin Brazil's coverage will include commentary by Wlamir Marques and Eduardo Agra.  On ESPN Deportes, Alvaro Martin and Carlos Morales will provide NBA Finals updates on ESPN's Spanish-language edition of SportsCenter for the U.S. and Latin America, ESPN Deportes Radio and www.ESPNdeportes.com .

HISPANIC MARKET:

Univision Communications
is looking at a new fee strategy in which it will ask for retransmission payments from multichannel TV platforms rather than the current must-carry fee.  The flipover will take place for many platforms on January 1, 2009 when numerous current deals will expire, per Multichannel News.

EXECUTIVE MOVES:

The newly formed IA Media has brought in former media consultant vet Adam Ware as President. As part of the new units management of ImaginAsian TV, Adam will manage the network's production, marketing, ad sales and distribution and its group of digital media properties.

A few changes have been made at ESPN's X Games as part of the division's renaming and reorganization under Keith Clinkscales as SVP/Content Development and Enterprises:

  • Ron Semiao, SVP/ESPN Films, who founded and developed the X Games idea 14 years ago, will continue to internationally as the Chief Creative X Officer while taking on the new role managing ESPN Films.
  • Rick Alessandri, MD/X franchise, will oversee X Games' expansion strategy and operations in the U.S. and globally.  Reporting to Keith, Rick will also manage and develop new business for the X Games brand and www.EXPN.com .
  • Chris Stiepock has been upped to VP and GM/X Franchise, reporting to Rick. In his new position, Chris will keep his responsibilities with the X Games in addition to new responsibilities increasing X business internationally and organizing ESPN's owned, organized and televised events, including the X Games, Winter X Games, all International X Games events and Moto X World Championships.  There's more in store for Chris with other duties overseeing action sports programming on ESPN's networks, including www.EXPN.com .
  • Under the reorg, Jack Wienert will continue in his current role reporting to Rick as Executive Director/X Games, a title he has held since April 2000. He will now manage all X Games-related properties including X Games, Winter X Games, Moto X World Championships, International X Games and other X Games branded properties.
