It's Monday, June 2, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: It definitely looks like Bulgaria's CableTel and Eurocom Cable operators will be merging following an end of May deal with the latter acquiring CableTel. The two have been negotiating since 2008 began on this agreement, which is now subject to regulatory approval. The U.K.'s Ramford Alliance Ltd is backing CableTel with Warburg Pincus Private Equity behind Eurocom Cable. Armoza Formats' factual game show The Bubble landed 10 new deals, including ones in Norway, the U.K. and Australia. During MIPTV, the format was also optioned in the U.S., Canada, France, The Netherlands and Germany. In the show, 3 people are secluded from the outside world for 1 week to return afterwards and decide which of the missing week's headlines and events shown to them are real or false. Germany's Axel Springer is teaming up with Philips on an international personal TV system which will enable viewers to pick channels according to what they prefer by combining the publishing group's TV Digital Personal program guide with Philip's Aprico software technology. The personalized electronic program guide will then pull in content from broadcast channels connected to the subject (e.g., news). It is due out in the second part of this year. The U.K.'s Virgin Media Television is going wide ... widescreen that is. The company will begin airing its channels, including LIVING, LIVING2, Bravo, Bravo2, Challenge, Trouble and Virgin1, in widescreen as of tomorrow. ESPN has been in Indian courts of late trying to get its 3 channels on Tata Sky's basic tier. The latest move happened on Friday with the Delhi High Court overturning the Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal's interim decision that the network's Reference Interconnect Order was invalid. That original May 20 ruling was based on a regulation that broadcasters must offer their networks to all DTH players a la carte, according to Indiantelevision. The new ruling stems from a clause in ESPN's new offer to Tata Sky in which it states that the carrier must carry ESPN, Star Sports and Star Cricket on basic with the repercussion of a disconnected ESPN signal as of May 20 if Tata Sky did not like the offer. The result of all this is that the latter clause would stand until the case was fully resolved. HISPANIC MARKET: Amas de Casas Desesperadas, the Spanish-language version of Desperate Housewives, is going to TV Azteca for a June 9 debut on its Canal 13. The series, produced for Univision by Disney Latin America as a weekly show, will instead be turned into a weekday primetime program by the Mexican network, per Variety.
