Cynopsis: International 05/28/08 Good morning. It's Wednesday, May 28, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: As part of its option agreement, Sweden's Zodiak Television AB has acquired the remaining 65% of the shares of Polish production company Mastiff Media Polska. The purchase price tag is about $5.4 million with a possible second payment next year depending on how the company fares. TNT Serie will be Turner Broadcasting System's fourth pay TV network in Germany when it debuts in January 2009. ER, Smallville, Monk and other series will be part of the lineup, which include both English-language and German-dubbed series. Distribution in Germany will include both cable and satellite with talks currently underway for additional distribution on IPTV and local cable. U.K.-based ITN Source inked with Northern Ireland's Ulster Television (UTV) to rep its archive internationally. The video agency will handle sales for the 50,000+ hours of movies, TV recordings and interviews with groups such as the Beatles and Rolling Stones. Canada's CCI Entertainment and Weekly Reader have decided to work together to develop educational content based on the Weekly Reader franchise for TV, DVD and the internet as well as consumer products for the Canadian and U.S. markets. They will also be distributed internationally. Paris-based Taffy Entertainment closed its first broadcast pre-sales agreement for Geronimo Stilton with Radio-Canada. The animated kids' TV series (26x22-minute), currently in production, is produced by Atlantyca Entertainment and Moonscoop Productions, in association with Mike Young Productions. Based on the children's chapter book series of the same name, it is scheduled to air in the 2009/2010 season. France may be in for yet another strike as the 10 unions repping the public broadcasting services' employees call for a June 18 strike. If it happens, staff from France Televisions networks, Radio France Internationale and the National Audiovisual Institute will conduct a one-day work stoppage for the second time in just a few months. The strike possibility follows on a government-commission report released last week that proposed changes to public broadcasting funding, including advertising limitations and state fees (in France, public TV depends quite a bit on advertising as opposed to licensing fees). We'll be kung-fu fighting as Cartoon Network welcomes the flash animated series Skunk Fu! to its programming lineup this week in its regular Tuesday 10a slot. Skunk Fu is co-produced by Cartoon Saloon, Cake Entertainment and Telegael for Ireland's TG4 and Germany's Super RTL, with Cake Entertainment controlling the series distribution rights and Galleon Plc., handling the licensing and merchandising rights. This deal is the second for the series in the U.S. It currently airs as part of the Kids WB! block on The CW as well as on the U.K.'s BBC, France 5 and Super RTL. HISPANIC MARKET: Azteca America and Latin American news agency Fuerza Informativa Azteca are combining forces to create a Hispanic journalistic network with 32 news bureaus and 108 reporters in Latin America and internationally in addition to a new studio at the Azteca parent headquarters in Mexico City. Azteca America's news broadcasts will continue at 530p and 11p as will the local news broadcasts in LA, Dallas, Houston and Las Vegas at their regularly scheduled times. Other parts of the business will remain the same, including the current news team, led by Jose Martin Samano. Local news in Chicago, Washington, D.C., Dallas, Houston and Las Vegas will be anchored by two new faces to the U.S., Mexican broadcast vets Christian Lara and Roberto Ruiz. In additional Azteca America news, the network will air the Mexican Soccer League Finals games live. On May 29 at 9p, Cruz Azul will face off against Santos Laguna in Mexico City and on June 1 at 6p, the two teams will play again in a final showdown. EXECUTIVE MOVES: Daniel "el Ruso" Brailovsky, the former head coach of Mexico's Club America, is returning to ESPN Deportes as the Co-Host of Mexican soccer studio show Futbol Picante. He made his first appearance last night at 12a. Daniel previously co-hosted the daily show from January 2005 through October 2007. Ibra Morales, President of the Telemundo Station Group will leave the company this Friday after not reaching a contract renewal agreement with the network. Ibra has been with Telemundo since 2002 and has served in various interim roles. At present, Telemundo will not fill Ibra's position until a reorganization takes place.
