INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Prisa is mulling over the sale of part or all of its Sogecable's Digital Plus pay-TV unit to bring down the Spanish media group's debt more in line with the sector's average (2.5 times EBITDA for sector vs. 6 times for Prisa). At this point, the company has not entered into any negotiations but is checking its options. The company has not yet crossed off financing in the market from its list of potential solutions. London's Digital Rights Group has launched a dedicated DRG Acquisitions Group, headed up by Andrea Jackson, Zeal Entertainment's MD. The new company's modus operandi will be to increase DRG-represented multi-genre content through program and funding development for all stages of production. Content acquired by the Group will be distributed internationally by several of its distribution companies, including Portman Film & TV, Zeal Entertainment, iD Distribution, Click TV, Channel 4 International and I-Rights. The K2-11-targeted Total Drama Island is leaving the island to travel to France's CANAL + Family, Benelux's Jetix, Israel's Noga, Turkey's Digiturk, Russia's Salmon and Bulgaria's Diema. The 26x22-minute series is a FRESH production with TELETOON Canada inc. with Cake Distribution handling distribution. FremantleMedia Enterprises inked more sales for its Australian drama Satisfaction (10x60-minutes). The series has been taken by Allarco (Super Channel) for English speaking Canada, Bulgaria's TV2, Estonia's Kanal 2 and Poland's TVN Style. London-based Cineflix International Ltd has signed quite a few programming sales deals with nine Scandinavian broadcasters for 500+ hours of programming in 25 shows, produced both in-house and through third-parties. On May 25, Discovery Channel Canada will take North American viewers to another planet. The Phoenix Lander is expected to touch down on Mars, the Red Planet, at approximately 746p. The network will air the landing live as part of its Earth - Discovery Channel presents Mars: The Phoenix Lands - A Daily Planet Special from 7-9p (simulcast on Discovery HD). Created and produced in-house by Discovery Channel Canada, the live 120-minute program will also be simulcast in the U.S. on Science Channel. HISPANIC MARKET: Univision's announcement this week about its January 2009 launch of a new VOD channel has been followed up by another volley from Grupo Televisa. The Mexican media corporation has stated that the U.S. Hispanic network will not be able to air its programming on the service, programming which currently accounts for 15 primetime hours a week on Univision itself. Univision's news about the new VOD service did not overtly include a Televisa mention but rather indicated importing news, sports, films and entertainment programming from Univision, Telefutura and Galavision. Televisa also mentioned that the Mexican Soccer League matches it licenses to Univision will not be able to be used on the service. AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET: In honor of the 15th anniversary of director Mario Van Peebles' Wild West with Posse and the 21-minute original special Posse Rides Again, Encore Westerns will showcase the films on June 6 at 6p and on June 19 at 6p on Starz In Black.
