Cynopsis: International 05/22/08 Good morning. It's Thursday, May 22, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: The Biography Channel (BIO) will launch in Southeast Asia on May 27 on Singapore's StarHub (Channel 95) and in the Philippines, with additional distribution deals expected in the coming months. It will first be offered to StarHub subscribers on the Free Preview Channel from May 27 through May 31 with Chinese subtitles. Future plans also involve distributing BIO content on mobile, broadband and VOD. The British Board of Film Classification has put into place a new internet ratings program for movies, TV shows and videos with the common U.K. certificates of U, PG, 12A, 15 and 18. Once internet-based services and stores decide to voluntarily join BBFC Online, they will be required to rate the content they offer for download and/or streaming in addition to blocking kids from gaining access to inappropriate content. At this time, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox have already joined the ratings certification program. RDF Rights secured five pre-sales for Blakeway's documentary Secrets of the Cellar, which aired on the U.K.'s Channel 4 last night. It has been sold to YLE in Finland, VTM in Belgium, SBS in the Netherlands, Cuatro in Spain and SIC in Portugal and GNT a Globosat channel in Brazil with more deals in the works. The documentary is one of the first programs to be made about the story of Josef Fritzl, the man who imprisoned his daughter in the cellar for 24 years and fathered children with her. Crusoe is coming back to life again in another take on the Daniel Defoe novel as a 13-episode series co-produced by Power, Muse and Moonlighting. The show is due to film in the U.K., South Africa and the Seychelles. Discovery Networks International is integrating its India and Asia divisions as of July 1. Rahul Johri, SVP/Ad Sales, Discovery Networks India, will take on the management responsibilities for India as SVP and Country Manager while Deepak Shourie, EVP and MD/Discovery Networks India, will become Advisor/Corporate Affairs, India. Canada's Corus Entertainment is expanding plans to develop Melanie Watt's Scaredy Squirrel book series into a multiplatform entertainment property. The collaborative effort between Kids Can Press, Nelvana Studios and Nelvana Enterprises includes a TV series, on-air animated shorts, additional publishing plans for other titles in the series and an international merchandise and licensing program. The 26-episode animated TV series and shorts will be produced in-house by Nelvana Studios in collaboration with Melanie with production starting on the latter first in Summer 2008. Nelvana Enterprises will handle international broadcast, distribution, merchandising and licensing sales. The U.K.'s Electric Sky has signed more post-MIPTV terrestrial and cable package deals, including one with Belgium's VTM for the high-def The Hunt for the Texas 7 (1x60-minutes) from U.K.-based Wild Dream Films. MySpaceTV has picked up the rights from RDF Digital to show Banzai, a Japanese spoof game show, as short mini webisodes for 30 days in an exclusive deal with MySpaceTV. After this time period, the episodes will be available on RDF Digital's U.K. website Comedy Demon and the U.S.' Dailymotion, Hulu, MetaCafe and YouTube. The series itself has already in the U.S. on Fox, Comedy Central and G4 and on E4 in the U.K. several years ago. HISPANIC MARKET: Fundacion Azteca America, Grupo Salinas and Azteca America Colorado are working together to present Agenda Latina 2008. The forum on issues affecting the Latino community, taking place on May 30 before a live studio audience, will air nationally on Azteca America in the beginning of June. Guests will be coming in from the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute, Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, Latino Issues Forum, League of United Latin American Citizens and other organizations. Season 2 of Si TV's Jammin will rock out on June 15 at 9p with 6 new Latino indie rock bands chosen by the www.jammin.sitv.com online community (200 bands submitted) to receive music industry training. LATAM MARKET: In continuation to its 2007 promise to expand its Buenos Aires operations, MTV Networks Latin America is revealing more details about the next phase this week. As a result of the expansion, Buenos Aires will become the Latin American "creative hub" for MTV, VH1 and Nickelodeon for part of their programming production and all of the on-air creative, dubbing and customization services for Spanish-speaking markets in the region. The company's digital media business will also be serviced and administered pan-regionally from the Argentina hub. In the next phase, MTVN Argentina will work on creative initiatives for MTV Networks International.
