Good morning. It's Thursday, May 15, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

Germany's ProSiebenSat.1 launched a new fully-owned production company titled Red Seven Entertainment to develop light entertainment content for the group for channels in Germany and throughout Europe as well as other platforms. ProSieben's current Head/Entertainment Jobst Benthues will be in charge of the new entity, which will be based out of a Munich suburb as part of ProSieben's Group Content Acquisitions and Productions Division under EVP Jan Frouman.  He will take on additional duties managing acquisition, production, distribution and format development.

FremantleMedia Enterprises entered into a deal with BermanBraun and Original Productions to pick up a variety of international TV, home entertainment and format rights to four new NBC shows on its 2008/2009 TV schedule. America's Toughest Jobs, Swords and Shark Taggers will be part of a four series deal, which will form a primetime programming block of 30+ hours. One additional series will be named in the near future.  The international TV rights, including Canada, and home entertainment rights in Australia and U.K. were gained for the 3 shows in addition to FremantleMedia Productions taking the global format rights to America's Toughest Jobs (also including Canada).

Digital Rights Group's Zeal Entertainment entered a new repping agreement with U.K.-based Love Productions for the global format and finished program rights (excluding North America) for its factual series Young Mums' Mansion (8x60-minutes).  The series, a social experiment of sorts, follows a group of young, single mothers and their children as they live together and pool their resources to see if communal living can help them.

Several more international distribution rights renewals were made by Warner Bros. International Television in addition to those mentioned in yesterday's Cynopsis: InternationalWarner Bros. Television's Eleventh Hour and The Mentalist were commissioned by CBS while the network also renewed WBITV's Cold Case, Without a Trace, The Big Bang Theory, The New Adventures of Old Christine and Two and a Half Men.

HISPANIC MARKET:

On May 25 at 10p, Discovery en Espanol will air Santo Milagro, an original production on the pageantry, color and rituals of how some Hispanics practice their religious faith and even unexpected ways in which they look for miracles.

In new news, Spanish Broadcasting System's Mega TV flagship station is now in an exclusive content sharing deal with Fox News,making the channel Fox News' only Hispanic affiliate in the U.S.  With the deal, Mega TV will gain complete access to the Fox News Edge interactive server.

Lifetime Networks and Cox Communications will launch all of the company's new multi-platform channels, including Lifetime Television HD, Lifetime Movie Network HD, Lifetime On Demand and Lifetime Movie Network Espanol On Demand. Cox will begin rolling out Lifetime HD to its customers in June.

The Top 10 Broadcast Spanish Language and English Language Primetime Program Live +SD ratings and African American TV home rankings from Nielsen Media Research for the week of May 5-11, 2008 will be posted in Friday's edition.

At its first upfront, the 14-month-old V-me spoke of reaching 6 million Hispanic TV homes, according to Nielsen, part of the 38 million households it reaches in the U.S.

GolTV is adding four new original programs to its line-up with a mix of exclusive 2010 World Cup soccer coverage, user-generated video, audience interaction and documentary-style features.

ESPN Deportes' upfront audience was treated to a special, onsite production of Miercoles de Combate (Wednesday Night Boxing) to mark the return of the sport to the network.  In addition to the showcase of sports guests, the network announced a distribution increase over the past year, bringing its total number of Hispanic households to 3.4 million Nielsen Hispanic homes this month.  Expanding its reach, ESPN Deportes Radio recently launched a new affiliate station in Milwaukee and will soon launch a Miami affiliate. ESPN Deportes' content and offerings expansion includes renewals for programming such as Dream Job: El Reportero, South American World Cup Qualifiers, Wednesday Night Fights and the documentary film Chavez as well as an expansion of SportsCenter and a new talk show.

  • Studio shows in development for Fall 2008 launches include a new 30-minute magazine show similar to ESPN's Around the Horn and a sports-talk radio show from ESPN Deportes Radio studios in Miami and simulcast in television on ESPN Deportes.
  • Returning Programming comes back in from several different sports, genres and leagues including UEFA Champions League, NBA, NFL, MLB, tennis, Mexican First Division Soccer, MLS, NASCAR and Dominoes as well as the 30-minute Perfiles portrait series and the 2008 World Salsa Championship

LATAM MARKET:

Nickelodeon Latin America and Illusion Studios will work together to co-produce the tale of La Maga y el Camino Dorado, based on the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz.  Each episode will have dual storylines taking place in both the world of reality and fantasy. La Maga y el Camino Dorado will be distributed by Dori Media Group.

ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET:

Comcast's International Networks subsidiary and News Corporation's STAR Group Ltd. Inked an agreement in which the former will rep five of STAR's Indian channels to MSOs in the U.S.  The five channels included in the agreement are:
  • STAR India PLUS: Hindi pay-TV channel with programs such as Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thii
  • STAR India GOLD: Bollywood movies from STAR's Indian film library
  • STAR India ONE: Hindi entertainment leaning to more urban Indian audiences with dramas Dill Mill Gayye, singing show Bol Baby Bol and more
  • STAR India NEWS: 24-hour Hindi news on politics, business, investigative reports and more in India and news from international news agencies
  • VIJAY: A Tamil entertainment channels with talent and music shows, sitcoms, thrillers, reality shows and dramas

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

Logo gave the green light to RuPaul's Drag Race, the network's new competition reality series starring RuPaul in the search for America's next superstar drag queen. It first launches this week with www.RuPaulsDragRace.com .  The 6x60-minute episode series is expected to debut on Logo's digital cable channel in early 2009.

EXECUTIVE MOVES:

The new EVP/Affiliate Sales and Marketing for TV One has been revealed with Michelle Rice taking over the position.  The prior SVP/Distribution Strategy and Operations and 4-year TV One exec will be in charge of distribution strategy and operations, including sales, marketing and local ad sales.

Martin Irusta is the new SVP/Programming and Acquisitions of NBC Universal's Global Networks.  In the newly created position, the London-based Martin will work on overseeing and guiding the company's existing channels' content and programming strategy, new channel strategy development and implementation, global acquisitions, investment in new and original productions, commissioned product and any in-house full length programming production intended for global use.  The prior SVP and Deputy MD of Fox International Channels (France) will report to Roma Khanna, President/Global Networks and Digital Initiatives.
