It's Wednesday, May 14, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Al Jazeera Network recently closed five distribution deals in the Philippines for its Al Jazeera English network, bringing the channel's total number of households to 110 million. Carriage will now be on Global Destiny Cable, Royal Cablevision Corporation, Eaglevision, Ultravision Cable TV and an Al Jazeera English simulcast on ABS-CBN News Channel from 4-430p. Lightworks Program Distribution signed a new international programming distribution deal to distribute CaribeVision-developed and produced content which aired on its U.S. Hispanic and Puerto Rican network. First up for licensing will be Hollywood Café, the 60-minute Fraganti and talk show Margarita Te Voy a Contar. It's official ... KidsCo has launched in Hong Kong as part of a broadcast deal with PCCW Now TV. The NBC Universal, DIC Entertainment and Corus Entertainment Inc. channel also recently picked up carriage agreements with Asia operators such as SingTel's mio TV in Singapore, the Philippines' Sky Cable and Korea's HanaTV. In Toronto, Astral Media's The Movie Network is cooking up its summer season programming lineup with series such as HBO's Generation Kill, the second season of Showtime's Californication (debuts day-and-date with Showtime in August), six new HBO documentaries and more. On May 25 at 9p, HBO Films' Recount will start off the summer for the Canadian network. Not to worry, Showtime's Penn & Teller: Bullshit! (season 6) will begin airing on June 23 at 10p while Canadian original Stargate: Atlantis (season 5) arrives on July 14 at 8p. National Geographic Channels International commissioned a new, 4-part series from IMG Entertainment Company's Darlow Smithson Productions with U.K. presenter/author Richard Hammond as host. The series, which discovers historical innovations behind the most advanced engineering projects, will begin airing internationally in September and in the U.S. on National Geographic Channel later this month. The Ba Ba Boom game show format rights for over 20 territories are going to Endemol courtesy of a new deal signed with 2waytraffic. It covers Australia, France, India, Italy, the Middle East, Russia, the U.K. and the U.S. As of yesterday, Warner Bros. International Television received distribution orders for the following network series for 2008/2009. The CW's new Surviving the Filthy Rich joins renewals for Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, Smallville and Supernatural while at ABC, WBITV's Pushing Daisies and The Bachelor were officially picked up again for the 20082009 season. They join previously announced renewals of WBITV's Chuck and ER. Canada's Distraction made three German sales via its German office for its The Next Great Leader, Trade Up and DNA formats with the first going to ZDF. IMG Group (Germany), Tiger Aspect (the U.K.) and Zebra Producciones (Spain) traded in on Traded Up with a second season pickup inked with Canada's Societe Radio-Canada. Tresor TV, a German producer, acquired the DNA game show format. HISPANIC MARKET: The Hispanic TV Upfronts continued yesterday with Fox Sports en Espanol and MTV Tr3s. Here's a look at what each is offering for the next season ... Fox Sports en Espanol's spoke of its partnership with Microsoft on www.msnlatino.com (1.5+ million unique users per month), Fox Sport Magazine (750,000 Hispanic HH monthly), and Fox Movil (mobile-sports offering). The network is extending its Copa Libertadores, Copa Nissan Sudamericana coverage through 2014, and InterLiga through 2010. Additional soccer programming will include the Torneo de Verano and Recopa, as well as coverage of the Mexican, Argentine, Italian Serie A and English Premier Leagues.
Since its launch less than two years ago, MTV Tr3s has picked up 6.3 million Hispanic TV households and 33.3 million total households. The network launched Fresh Music Mondays, a new music block, as well as the second season of Music My Guey. The latter is an online platform where fans can create playlist, post photos and potentially be selected to air. The multi-platform music discovery Descubre & Download will return with the network also picking up the new Dame Un Break to discover unsigned Latino artists. It debuts June 3. Among the returning programs, MTV Tr3s is bringing back Mi TRL, Karlifornia, Quiero Mis Quinces (season 3 with a digital component), Sucker Free Latino, MTV Tr3s Weekend Stunts (expanded slate), The Yearbook Chronicles and Pimpeando, along with newbies Bust-a-Ritmo and Rock Dinner. MTV Tr3s' first short-form animation series, Lugar Heights, is also part of its 2009 offerings. It follows the adventures of several friends living in Lugar Heights. EXECUTIVE MOVES: Jamie Weissenborn, formerly VP/Global Ad Sales, International Networks, has been upped by Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) to serve as SVP/Digital Media and Global Ad Sales, International Networks. Reporting to Andy Kaplan, SPTI's President/International Networks, Jamie will take on additional responsibilities for the group's digital distribution, website development, traffic growth, media sales and digital revenue. He will continue to lead global ad sales, branded content, new channel and revenue development spanning across SPTI's AXN, ANIMAX and Sony Entertainment Television channels. Marking its fifth year, Ontario's General Purpose Pictures (GPP) named Tiina Soomet as VP/Operations in addition to promoting producer Josie Crimi to Head/Production. Tiina, a National Film Board of Canada-trained editor, has worked as an indie producer with clients such as CBC, NFB, TV Ontario, CHUM Television and others.
