It's Friday, May 9, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: An Italian version of Al Gore and Joel Hyatt's Current TV went live in Italy yesterday on Sky Italia. In addition to the localized, Italian-language channel, the endeavor will also have an online component with Tommaso Tessarolo managing the new channel while Davide Scalenghe heads up production. Following final talks at MIPTV, Zodiak Television's Zodiak Vostok Russian business development unit inked a format agreement for a new season of its international celeb-based primetime Stars on Stage series with First Channel Russia. Dve Svezdy, the Russian version, will go into production for a second 12-episode run. The original series was created by Zodiak's MTV Mastiff Sweden. Globo TV International and Canada's Rogers are new partners with the latter now airing Globo's Amazonia miniseries. U.K.-based Optomen International granted new licenses for its Kitchen Nightmares and The F Word with Australia's Nine Network. Further renewals from XYZ were signed for more than 300 hours of Market Kitchen and the Great British Menu. The Nine Network grabbed second helpings of US Kitchen Nightmares and season 4 of the U.K. version of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. Australian distributor Shock signed on a DVD agreement for the latter two (season 2-4 and 1-2, respectively) as well as season 2-4 of The F Word. Taffy Entertainment inked broadcast and video rights deals for a range of series:
Canada's Rogers OMNI Television is marking two firsts: the launch of its exclusive multilingual UEFA European Football Championship coverage and the debut of digital over-the-air transmission for Toronto-based Rogers OMNI.1 and OMNI.2 viewers. It kicks of on June 7 at 12p with the live, tri-lingual coverage of the competition's first match (Switzerland and the Czech Republic) airing simultaneously on OMNI.1 in Italian and in Cantonese and Mandarin on OMNI.2. HISPANIC MARKET: V-me added titles to its natural history lineup with two new programs from the BBC, Big Cat Diary and Dinosaur Detectives. Big Cat Diary (El Diario de Grandes Felinos) airs at 630p on Wednesdays and 430p on Saturdays while Dinosaur Detectives (Dinodetectives) will be on the same days at 6p and 4p, respectively. This June, ESPN will air exclusive live coverage of the UEFA European Football Championship 2008 on quite a few of platforms, including ESPN2, ESPN, ESPN Classic, ABC, the networks' high-def versions and www.ESPN360.com . As part of its multicultural coverage of the June 7-29 tournament, ESPN Deportes will offer up exclusive Spanish-language coverage of the 31 matches with 25 airing live. On days where simultaneous matches occur (June 15-18), the second match will have a tape delay, including two ABC matches on ESPN Deportes. The network will also broadcast a 60-minute daily Euro 2008 studio show as well as pre-game, halftime and post-game segments. LATAM MARKET: Nickelodeon Latin America inked an agreement with Sony Pictures Television International for the co-production of Isa TKM (Te Quiero Mucho), its first original telenovela to be produced in Venezuela. The show will be produced in Spanish and adapted in Portuguese for Nickelodeon Brazil with production due to being in August. Winter 2008 is the anticipated debut. ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET: In honor of the 30th anniversary of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, ImaginAsian Entertainment, Inc.,the network is launching new programming, a PSA campaign and sponsoring the Asian & Pacific Islander American Vote's first Presidential Town Hall on May 17. Reporting to Jeffrey R. Schlesinger, Warner Bros. International Television's President, Jim will manage the licensing of all Warner Bros.' series, movies and animation to pay and free TV in those regions as well as to basic subscription, AVOD and SVOD services.He takes over from the newly upped Malcolm Dudley-Smith, who was named as EVP/Branded Services - Business Management.
