INTERNATIONAL MARKET: The European Commission is putting a plan into action to increase EU affairs coverage on TV and radio channels and multimedia platforms. The $63 million plan, Communicating Europe through audiovisual media, proposes a network of TV channels in 2009-2010 in addition to the 16-station EuRaNet radio network launched at the beginning of April as well expanding the raw audiovisual material it has available for free and its own video productions on EU policies. The A Team, "the daddy of 80's action series," (Bravo Channel Controller Dave Clarke's words - wish I came up that one) is making a trip overseas to Virgin Media Television's men's entertainment channel Bravo following a deal with NBC Universal. Starting in May, the network will air 98x60-minute series' season 1 through 5 as part of its daytime schedule. I love it when a plan comes together. A few post-MIPTV deals for PorchLight Entertainment, including the sale of Farm Kids (26x13-minutes) to Rainbow's HD Voom networks and Four Eyes (52x13-minutes) and My Goldfish is Evil (26x30-minutes) to the U.K.'s CITV. PorchLight also concluded a new multi-title agreement with PeaceArch for Canadian and North American rights to several projects, including Renart the Fox and The Ultimate Gift. The U.S.' V-me took Ozie Boo! (78x7-minutes), Holiday went to Eagle in Italy and Maple in Canada and Treasure Island Kids will travel to Jetix for U.K. and Scandinavia. Wallander is making its way back to Scandanavia and the U.S. as an English-language version (U.K.) following sales to Sweden's TV4, Denmark's Danmarks Radio¸ Norway's TV2 and the U.S.' WGBH. Zodiak International inked the distribution deals for the three, 90-minute movies, which will air first on the BBC, according to TBI vision. They are being produced by Zodiak's Yellow Bird and indie Left Bank Pictures for BBC Scotland with Zodiak in charge of distribution in Eastern Europe, the Baltics, Germany and Scandinavia while BBC Worldwide (1/4 owner in Left Bank) picks up the rest of the world. The original films were in Swedish. Virgin 17/MCM in France has inked a 143-episode broadcast licensing deal with Toei Animation for the One Piece animation series. Airing at 5p on weekdays, the show will have revised French-language dubbing and new voice castings to produce the series as more faithful to the original Japanese animation (an adaptation of Mr Eiichiro ODA's comics). Through an agreement with Disney-ABC International Television, Canada's CTV will offer certain episodes of Lost, Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy on its www.CTV.ca 's CTV Video Player for free in Canada. HISPANIC MARKET: Spanish Broadcasting System, Inc.'s MEGA TV held its first upfront at the end of last week with the big news of the evening stemming from its new programming distribution deal with WSJU, a new market affiliate in Puerto Rico. Megafilms, the new entertainment unit set to produce exclusive Spanish-language filmed content for MEGA TV, was also officially launched. Pangea Day, a live 4-hour international event, will take place on May 10. From 2-6p, V-me will join a network of global broadcasters connecting live events from Cairo, London, Los Angeles, Kigali, Mumbai and Rio de Janeiro through 24 short films, speakers and music. The network will air the shorts with Spanish subtitles and provide simultaneous translations of presenters and speakers. Talent Group plc's Talent Television is bringing in some new talent by naming Dinah Gray as Development Executive/Factual Entertainment.
