INTERNATIONAL MARKET: U.K.-based RDF Media received a buyout offer from a consortium that seems to include several of its management execs, possibly counting RDF CEO David Frank. Mention of the proposal sent shares up by over 33%. The next move is for RDF's indie directors to evaluate and accept/decline the offer to take the company private. FremantleMedia Enterprises is continuing its distribution partnership with production house Sally Head Productions for another 3 years, covering shows such as Fanny Hill, Tipping the Velvet and Fingersmith. Studio B Productions Inc. signed on with three Canadian educational TV networks for broadcasting rights for Martha Speaks. TVO, Knowledge Network and SCN will begin airing the 40x30-minute series in Fall 2008 for the K4-8 crowd as will the U.S.' PBS KIDS. Martha Speaks, a co-production with WGBH Boston, was originally a children's book series by Susan Meddaugh. Quite a few orders have been placed this week, including the following deals:
The U.K.'s Neal Street Productions picked up the TV rights to Jennifer Worth's book Call the Midwife, the first of a trilogy by Worth, chronicling her experiences as a midwife in the Docklands during the 1950s. HISPANIC MARKET: ESPN Deportes is joining The Nielsen Company's Nielsen Homevideo Index Hispanic (NHIH) Service to report program ratings from the Hispanic sub-sample of Nielsen's National People Meter panel as of April 28. Approximately 1,722 Hispanic households are included within Nielsen's National People Meter sample, representing 12% of all households. ESPN Deportes will be one of six fully-rated Spanish-language cable networks within the Hispanic Sub-Sample. As part of its upcoming lineup, V-me will air the 2-part Teaching the Future: The True Story of Maria Montessori on April 28 at 10p, showing the life of the educator and 3-time Nobel nominee. The second half will air on May 5. V-me Peliculas will present Las Lloranas (The Weeping Women), based on a traditional Hispanic legend, on April 30 at 10p. LATAM MARKET: Mexico's TV Azteca is taking telenovelas to a new level with the launch of the 24-hour Azteca Novelas. Close to 50 pay TV platforms have signed on to air the programming, which is organized within four, 6-hour blocks with classic novellas airing first followed by more recent shows in the future. GAY/LESBIAN MARKET: Canada's OUTtv national gay and lesbian TV network has licensed programming to OUTTV Media in the Netherlands, creating the first Dutch gay lifestyle TV network. The new channel will feature OUTtv's Coverguy and Bump! as well as other programming such as Queer as Folk, Dante's Cove and Mile High. EXECUTIVE MOVES: ProSiebenSat.1 Media's new CFO will be Axel Salzmann as of June 11. He replaces outgoing CFO Lothar Lanz, who has been with the company for the past 12 years. Axel will oversee finance and investor relations, legal affairs, regulatory affairs and administration. Jeremy Carr has been appointed VP/Regional Entertainment Advertising Sales for Turner Entertainment Networks Asia, Inc. (TENA) from his recent Partner and Director position at International Media Representation Company Pty Ltd. Based in Hong Kong, he will oversee TV and interactive ad sales for the properties TENA represents, with particular attention on South Asia and Australia/New Zealand. He is responsible for 13 TV channels including: Cartoon Network's India, Australia, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Pakistan and South East Asia feeds, Pogo in India, Boomerang in Australia and Southeast Asia and HBO in South Asia. Eight Cartoon Network online destinations and the TCM and Pogo websites are also under his responsibility. Jeremy takes over his new position for Soumitra Saha, who was named head of TENA in December 2007. Antonio Roman, a 12-year veteran at Univision Communications Inc., has been named as VP/Network Sales in Miami.
