INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Spanish-based Promotora de Informaciones SA's Grupo Media Capital in Portugal sold its RETI analog TV channel for an undisclosed amount to Portugal Telecom (PT). PT already owns three other analog channels (RTP1, RTP 2 and SIC). Today is the last day to bid for a 15-year digital terrestrial TV platform license and rumor has it that PT will place a 40-channel platform bid which will now include the four free-to-air channels. ESPN Classic will launch in South Africa via Multichoice's DStv platform as of May 1, joining its sister ESPN live sports network on the service. B. Wooding inked new international factual program deals for its slate coming out of MIPTV.
Arab Digital Distribution, a pay TV platform and management company in the Middle East and North Africa, has added Turner's Boomerang channel in Arabic to its offerings on Art (Arabic entertainment), Pehla (Asian entertainment) and FirstNet (international entertainment). On May 30, GolTV will kick off its coverage of the 2010 World Cup qualifying matches of the Italian National Team as part of its agreement with RAI Trade, the global TV distribution rights holder. The soccer network picked up with the exclusive U.S. and Canada broadcast rights to the 11 matches (5 home games and six friendly matches), starting off with a friendly game between Italy and Belgium on May 30. PBS Kids' Super Why is going across the ocean following a deal between the series' global distributor (excluding the U.S.), Decode Enterprises, and the U.K.'s Nick Jr. The animated preschool show has already gone to Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea, in addition to airing on the U.S.' PBS Kids. Canada's CCI Entertainment sold the 30x11-minute Frankenstein's Cat to Germany's ARD for KI.KA and South Africa's MNET. The animated series for K6-11 viewers, is based on a Curtis Jobling book. Shaftesbury Films' 60-minute drama Murdoch Mysteries has been renewed for a second run by Citytv. Based on Maureen Jennings's Detective Murdoch Mystery novels, the show is set in 1895 Toronto. Granada International holds the international distribution rights for TV and video (excluding Canada and U.K. TV rights). Corus Entertainment's Movie Central (western Canada) and Astral Media's The Movie Network (eastern Canada) will debut HBO Films' Recount day-and-date with HBO on May 25 at 7p (PT) and 9p (ET), respectively. The drama portrays the controversial 2000 presidential election in Florida that brought Bush to the presidency. HISPANIC MARKET: The MEXICANAL Network inked a multicasting deal with Neuhoff Family Limited Partnership LLP, a CBS affiliate in Twin Falls, Idaho. The network will be available to viewers receiving digital TV multicast channels from KMVT as of May 5. MEXICANAL's Mexican programming includes news, culturally relevant programs, regional sports and entertainment shows. On April 28, Azteca America will launch a new judge on the block with the weekday Juez Franco (Judge Franco) show debuting at 6p. The 30-minute show with Judge Manuel Franco is the evening version of La Corte del Pueblo, another real-life courtroom program. Juez Franco is produced by Proenza de la Paz Entertainment. The Sunday lineup on Spanish Broadcasting System's MEGA TV Channel 22 will get a new musical boost with the addition of La Descarga Con Albita. The musical show, featuring the Cuban singer, will begin airing at 8p on April 27. So the Sunday schedule lineup will consist of Mega News: The Weekend Edition (6p), El Circulo (7p), La Descarga con Albita (8p), Raices y Recuerdos (9p) and Mega Reporte (10p). Other scheduling changes include Consulta Medica (Medical Advice), hosted by Veronica Yussin, premiering on April 26 in its regular Saturday 7p slot.
