INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Romania will be the newest recipient of NBC Universal Global Networks' SCI FI and Universal Channel. Localized versions of the two will make their debut on the country's AKTA TV platform (formerly MAX TV), airing daily from 9a to 3a will Romanian subtitles. maxdome, ProSieben's German online video store and VOD portal, has extended its current agreement with Sony Pictures Television International as part of a multi-year deal with ProSiebenSat.1 Group. maxdome customers will be able to digitally rent Sony Pictures current and library movies titles and current and classic hit TV series on www.maxdome.de . BBC Worldwide is reportedly looking into acquiring Virgin Media Television (VMTV), which owns UKTV Drama, Dave, UKTV History, UKTV Style and UKTV Gold. In the past, rumors had pointed towards BBC buying out VMTV's 50% of the UKTV content business that the two companies co-owned but this is the first rumor of a full VMTV buy. According to the Sunday Telegraph, BBC Worldwide is talking to several equity firms to drum up money to make a bid, including Cinven, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Providence Equity Partners. VMTV is valued at close to $1.5-6 billion. Other rumors are swirling around that Europe's RTL Group and Haim Saban are interested in buying BSkyB's 17.9% share in U.K.-based ITV. The news drove up ITV's public trading by 6.1%, somewhat good news following a 40% drop in the broadcaster's stock since the beginning of last year. No comment has been made from the key players regarding the rumors. Zee TV, India's largest network, will make its way to Russia by the end of the year with plans including a new Russian office and Russian-language satellite or cable broadcasts with Indian film and other content to be translated back in Mumbai. This marks a first as Zee TV will become the first non-Russian TV corporation to directly operate in the market instead of going through a distributor. There is a Russian law on the books that a Russian resident must hold the controlling stake in foreign TV broadcasters to air in the country. Zee TV is reportedly currently seeking a 24-hour channel license but has not named its Russian partner as of yet. Eurosport and BSkyB have signed on to broadcast the Championship Gaming Series. The former picks up the continental European broadcast, mobile and broadband rights for the DirecTV videogame tournaments in 41 countries on Eurosport2 starting this April, per Variety. In the U.K. and Ireland, Sky airs the tournaments with Eurosport holding the secondary rights. Australia's Nine Network pulled in some post-MIPTV factual entertainment programming deals with the U.K.'s ID Distribution, including three 60-minute documentaries and the 9x60-minute How To Have S#x After Marriage series, per C21. The National Film Board of Canada is sending 11 films south to Sundance Channel following a content agreement with the network. The feature documentaries include The Wild Horse Redemption, Triage: Dr. James Orbinski's Humanitarian Dilemma and Confessions of an Innocent Man while the shorts picked up are Madame Tutli-Putli, Sleeping Betty, Engine 371 and 5 others. As part of a cross-platform effort, Tanzania's 5 million children will meet Kilimani Sesame's Kami, Moshe, Zikwe, Lulu and Neno Muppets. Sesame Workshop inked an agreement with the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation and Television Zanzibar to debut 13 TV and 13 radio episodes of the pilot preschool series in Kiswahili this month. The episodes are adapted from South Africa's Takalani Sesame, dubbed in Kiswahili with 6 original and Tanzania-produced live action movies with Maweni Farms. The Kilimani Sesame initiative for the country's 3-7 year olds is supported through the United States Agency for International Development. Tanzania-based producer Aeigies International produced the radio episodes and dubbing for Takalani Sesame. The Sesame Street version will tackle issues such as malaria, hygiene, HIV/AIDS and other topics that concern the country's youth. CROSS-MARKET: Doves Day is Gospel Music Channel's name for tomorrow, April 23, in anticipation of the channel's first live telecast of the 39th Annual GMA Dove Awards Live. The Best of The Doves Marathon will kick off the day at 7a with the show itself to begin at 8p. HISPANIC MARKET: Spanish Broadcasting System and Mega TV are launching DNT, The Show, a new show hosted by Argentinean motivational speaker Dante Gebel. It makes its regular Saturday night timeslot debut on April 26 at 11p and 1130p (PT) on DirecTV Mas (Channel 405) and 12p and 1230p on DirecTV Puerto Rico (Channel 169). DNT (Non-Traditional Discourse) is a take on the traditional late night show format with more monologues and peculiar stories. Targeted to African American women, the 5-7-minute entertainment and Extra snippets hosted by Tanika Ray will also be joined on the site by the Fab in a Flash style series. Other future potential avenues named by the companies include made-for-DVD content launches and more non-scripted content.
