Good morning. It's Wednesday, April 9, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

MIPTV NEWS:

Germany's ProSiebenSat.1 Group is partnering with IBM to create a pan-European digital platform in a new 10-year outsourcing deal valued at more than 200 million euros.  As part of the agreement, IBM will manage and improve ProSiebenSat.1 Produktion's IT business applications, IT and media systems, transferring 170 of that division's employees to IBM in 1Q2009.  IBM will also build a broadcast integration center and more in the next few years.  ProSiebenSat.1 Group will establish a new Munich-based playout center in addition to its existing center in Chiswick/London.

MGM Networks is launching a high-def version of Israel's The MGM Channel to subscribers starting this spring. The new version will be simulcast with the existing standard def channel but as part of the high-def basic tier of Israeli DTH platform, YES. Over the course of the next several months, the channel will ramp up to a 24/7 simulcast of The MGM Channel. Similar to the standard def The MGM Channel, it will be subtitled in Hebrew.

Alchemy Entertainment has brought Universal Pictures International Entertainment on board to exclusively release its series and miniseries on DVD and through VOD platforms internationally, per Variety.

Two renewals agreements coming out of MIPTV ...
  • FremantleMedia Enterprises and Sundance Channel have renewed their exclusive international distribution agreement, which originally began in April 2006.
  • A&E Television Networks and ZDF Enterprises extended current programming and co-production deal for another 3 years, in addition to a new syndication repping agreement.  As part of the deal, ZDF will buy non-fiction content from AETN International's History catalog for its ZDF History programming block while The History Channel in Germany will acquire local history programming from ZDF Enterprises and biography and lifestyle programming for The Biography Channel.  In terms of co-productions, the two will work on nine contemporary/ancient history shows over the next 3 years to air on Germany's ZDF and the U.S.' History Channel.  The new aspect of their partnership will see ZDF Enterprises repping AETN International for German-speaking Europe for Modern Marvels.
  • Granada International inked a 3-year renewal output agreement with the Netherlands' SBS Broadcasting.  In addition to the current factual, factual entertainment and TV movies SBS already acquires, the new aspect of the deal includes daytime programming. It also encompasses a format license to create a local version of GI's Come Dine With Me series for Net 5.

Canal France International (CFI) and the Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) are co-launching the France-Singapore Cross-Platform Programme Challenge to promote new cross and multi-platform content collaboration and grow bilateral ties.  In partnership with TV France International, the three are looking for program proposals with cross-platform potential and a focus on topics of interest to Europe and Asia. This is the first initiative following CFI-MDA's Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in November 2007.

Disney-ABC International licensed its The Amazing Race format to Israel's Reshet for a local language production in which contestants will compete in a race across Asia.  In other news, Disney-ABC International renewed its deal with SBS for Benelux, covering the free-to-air rights for live action series and films.

The U.K.'s Fluorescent Media inked with LA-based adult animation creators Kush Boys Studios to co-develop, produce and distribute cross-platform programming and branded entertainment extensions based on the Master Kush property.  The series is expected to make its debut later in 2008.

Mexico's Televisa will work with France-based Groupe JLA to the creation, production and localization of telenovelas for Europe with an initial direction targeting the youth market.  The two have already worked together on adapting a Mexican telenovela for the French market, titled Baie des Flamboyants.

Options for CALT Distribution's Women format to producer Sagrera TV for Spain, in addition to sales for season 1 to Direct Sight (Ukraine), HBO Czech (Czech, Republic and Slovak Republic), HBO Adria (Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia-Montenegro, Macedonia, Bosnia Herzegovina), HBO Romania (Romania and Moldavia), HBO Bulgaria (Bulgaria), HBO Hungary (Hungary), HBO Poland (Poland) and Canal Vie (Quebec).  The Women format is also going to Endemol and Mediaset for Italy and to the GMA group for Philippines.

ProSiebenSat.1 Group's SevenOne International sold The Next Uri Geller to Turkey's Star TV in addition to verbal license agreements with 3 other broadcasters in Europe, per C21.

Animal Planet International is partnering with France 5 to produce Pandamonium (5x60-minutes).  Taking an exclusive glimpse into panda breeding, research and conservation at the Wolong Conservation & Research Centre (China), the ITN Factual-produced high-def show will air on Animal Planet internationally and on France 5 later in the year.

Britain's Revolver is exclusively nuts, that is it now has the exclusive rights for Turner Broadcasting System's Nuts TV.  The two will collaborate on DVD content as well.  This is part of a new U.K. and Ireland home video rights Revolver deal for Turner's Adult Swim for over 100 titles.

A new international distribution and co-production deal is underway between Hit Entertainment Zeppelin Animation's Smartoonz for 3 preschool series, including the K2-5-targeted Little Fables.  The two companies will produce live action/3D animation Monkey See, Monkey Do (K2-6) and stop motion Clay Play (K1-3) for 2009.  The first option rights for future Smartoonz productions was also picked up by Hit, which has already sold the 26x5 1/2-minute Little Fables show to Thailand's UBC for an August debut.

In another Hit hit, Hit Entertainment also unveiled plans for a new CGI animated version of Angelina Ballerina, with co-production partners Thirteen/WNET New York and Nick Jr. UK. Angelina Ballerina: The Next Steps (40x30-minutes or 80x12-minutes) is slated to premiere on the U.S.' PBS Kids and Nick Jr. UK in Fall 2009. Based on the Angelina Ballerina books by Katharine Holabird and Helen Craig, the show is being produced by SD Entertainment.

Belgian distributor Dybex (formerly Dynamic Visions) has sold the digital rights to its entire Japanese manga library to Gong, a French digital anime channel targeting the A15-25 audience.  Payment for the agreement was partially made up of licensing fees and revenue sharing, according to C21.

In Germany, Bavaria Media Television sold 3x90-minute episodes of its Aspe crime series to public broadcaster ZDF.

LA's MarVista Entertainment inked new deal in which the company will be the exclusive international distributor (excluding Spain) for two new TV movies co-produced by Drimtim Entertainment, Gestmusic Endemol Spain and Antena 3 Films.  MarVista CEO Fernando Szew and President Michael D. Jacobs will also serve as exec producers on the two projects.

Invento, a Colombian telenovela format producer, inked two inhouse deals with Grundy Productions' Spanish and Italian divisions.   Each acquired drama Forbidden Games' format rights.  FremantleMedia owns Grundy as well as a co-owning Invento with Colombia's Teleset, per C21.

Outback Wildlife Rescue, Aussie indie Freehand's new factual series, has been sold by BBC Worldwide to UKTV (U.K. and Ireland), free-to-air Channel 9 in Thailand, TVB in Hong Kong and Greece's Eidiseis.  The 13x30-minute series was first ordered up by Australia's Seven Network and has already been acquired by New Zealand's TVNZ.  It focused on the non-profit Wildlife Rescue Darwin as it cares for and rehabilitates wild animals for release.  (BBC Worldwide has a 25% stake in Freehand).  BBC Worldwide also inked a package agreement with Switzerland's German-language network SF for close to 35 hours of natural history programming.

Fiver, formerly Five Life, is importing MTV's 8x30-minute The Paper series for an late day slot. Beyond International repped the reality/documentary deal, per C21.  The network also recently picked up Disney-ABC International's The Fashionista Diaries.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

BBC Arabic has picked up further carriage in the United Arab Emirates following a deal with the E-Vision cable TV platform.  This is the first local cable agreement for BBC Arabic, which will be carried on E-Vision's Channel 41.

Transformers Animated (26x22-minutes plus 1x70-minute special) is being transported internationally to Mediaset (Italy), Turner Broadcasting (Australia, Latin America and India), Jetix (Israel, Netherlands and Belgium), Network 10 (Australia), TV3 (New Zealand), Mediacorp TV12 (Singapore) and TV Globo (Brazil) following new deals signed by the U.K.'s Entertainment Rights Plc. This brings the number of broadcast agreements for the Cartoon Network Studios-developed show to more than 80 territories.

Metronome Film & Television's Friday TV sold 10 episodes of its Single Moms format to the U.S.'s TLC, marking the 10th country for the format.  Rocket Science will produce the entertainment show for an anticipated Summer 2008 debut.  The relationship reality show has three single moms date three men in a search for love.

In other Metronome Film & Television news, the company bought the rights to Hasbro and Debmar-Mercury's new TV format Trivial Pursuit for Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland (areas in which Metronome has program-producing subsidiaries).  The Metronome versions will have both TV and internet-based activities. Spain's Antena 3 will be the first with the 65-episode Trivial Pursuit: Spain Plays.

HISPANIC MARKET:

WAPA America, a U.S. Hispanic, San Juan-based channel with all Puerto Rican productions, is launching on BrightHouse Networks in the Orlando area (adding 850,000 new viewers) and Central Florida.  Added as Digital Cable channel 63, Wapa America is offered for no additional cost to subscribers.

DIRECTV Mas, DIRECTV's Spanish and English-language programming service, officially launched its newly expanded channel lineup this week at the 2008 Latin Billboards. The service offers over 45 Spanish-language and more than 230 English-language channels.

The 9th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards will be broadcast live on Univision from Houston on November 13, marking the first time Houston will host the event. Nominations for this year's awards will be made public on September 10.

Univision came in as #1 network among all A18-34 from 8-11p on April 4, bringing in the top 3 shows that night with Al Diablo con los Guapos, Pasion and Nuestra Belleza Latina, according to Nielsen (NTI, Live+SD. NSI, Live Data).
