04/03/08 Good morning. It's Thursday, April 3, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: India's new English-language business news channel, UTVi, is sourcing ABC news programming content from Disney-ABC International Television (Asia-Pacific) as part of an over 5-year tie-up between the two companies. The UTV Software Communications-backed channel's content will be delivered through TV, the internet and mobile. Unilazer Ltd., UTV Software Communications' founder, also stated that it will contemplate buying a 20% stake in UTVi within the next 3-6 months. No plans are in the works for ABC to buy into the channel, according to Unilazer. On the other hand, Disney is acquiring a 15% stake in UTV subsidiary UTV Global Broadcasting Ltd. for close to $30 million. In addition to its 2006 buy of UTV's Hungama TV, Disney will also now up its 14.9% equity interest in UTV Software Communications to 32% for $200 million. Endemol's LA-based Endemol USA bought a controlling stake in indie company 51 Minds Entertainment for over $200 million. The production house, which focuses on reality and celebreality in particular, is behind such VH1 series as The Surreal Life, I Love New York and Flavor of Love. Not to worry - The company that Cris Abrego and Mark Cronin founded and head up will exist as an indie studio within Endemol out of its LA offices. In a new cross-Atlantic deal, London's MoMedia International inked with Montreal-based Just For Laughs comedy festival to distribute its comedy content on digital platforms. It covers formats such as Just For Laughs Gags (139x30-minutes), Just Kidding!, Just For Laughs Stand-Up, Just For Variety and others. The U.K.'s Parthenon Entertainment brought in two pre-MIPTV deals for Roman Mysteries with the U.S.' Family Room HD channel. The Rainbow Media channel will begin airing the BBC kids drama in September. The epic drama will also head to Spain where Cuatro. In addition to a recent pickup by Germany's ARD, Parthenon is in advanced talks with networks in Italy and France for The Little Entertainment Group production. In other Rainbow Media news, the company's Animania HD is importing the Nanigugu cartoon from Ypsilon Films in Spain. The preschool show is being produced by Barcelona's Pataboom for a Spring 2009 delivery. Ypsilon also recently sold its 7Pets to Disney Spain. MTV Networks' MTV Networks Germany is teaming up with iTunes to offer certain content for download-to-own (DtO) in Germany on iTunes Store. This is the first collaboration between the two companies in Europe. So fans can now go get their fill of South Park, SpongeBob SquarePants and Avatar: The Legend of Aang with an initial offer of 47 episodes of the three series will be available for download. Another 19 seasons (251 episodes) will be added over the next few weeks in addition to the series Drawn Together. Shaftesbury Films and ShineReveille International inked an international distribution deal for Shaftesbury's new The Listener drama series (13x60-minutes). It is scheduled to air on the U.S.' NBC and Canada's CTV. ShineReveille will distribute the series globally, excluding North America, while Fox International will hold the cable and satellite rights in Europe, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. Portugal Telecom is debuting a new DTH satellite TV channel through its Meo brand, which carries 70+ channels. Plans include utilizing the same satellite that rival Zon Multimedia (cable TV) uses to make it easier on customers as part of Portugal Telecom's 8-year agreement with Hispasat ... By the way, Zon was just spun off of Portugal Telecom. IM Global launched a new division under the name IM Global Television to handle its international TV and digital broadcast content sales and acquisitions. In addition to taking care of the company's reality, animation, miniseries, and other content, the unit will rep its 100+ title film library, per Variety. Gavin Reardon, previously President of ... And Action! Distribution, will head up IM Global Television as President. A new multi-year output agreement with Intermedia Television also lends more content to the roster. Scandinavian distributor Nordisk Film TV World has sold the format rights to 71 Degrees North to the U.S.' 25/7. The reality show deal was repped by William Morris. Canada/U.K. co-production Spectacle: Elvis Costello with ..., hosted by Elvis Costello and produced with Sir Elton John's Rocket Pictures, will begin filming for a late 2008 airing on Canada's CTV, the U.K.'s Channel 4 and the U.S.'s Sundance Channel. FremantleMedia Enterprises will be in charge of international sales. The 13x60minute talk/music combination show includes discussions and performances with music artists. Breakthrough Entertainment Inc. picked up the international distribution rights to Revillusion Films' 90-minute action/adventure TV movie The Artists and animation, adventure series Fishtronaut (52x11-minute or 26x30-minute). The latter is targeted to the K4-7 crowd from producers TV PinGuin (Brazil) in association with Discovery Kids. 9 Story Entertainment picked up a series pickup from Canada's YTV for the new 13-episode, live-action series Survivorman Kids (WT). 9 Story is working with wilderness survivor expert/filmmaker Les Stroud to develop Survivorman Kids, which is based on his Discovery Channel (USA) and OLN (Canada) reality program Survivorman. The 9 Story and YTV co-production will feature a team of six teens 14-16, with little or no real outdoor experience, in the wilderness for three weeks with Stroud along as both a mentor and judge. Castalia Communications upped Fernando Ramos de Miguel to Director/Sales and Marketing for Mexico and Central America. In addition to continuing to oversee ad sales for MEXICANAL Television Network and content distribution to broadcasters and new media companies, Fernando will take on new responsibilities for distribution and affiliate relations for BBC World in these territories.
