Good morning. It's Thursday, March 13, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

Rumors are swirling around that Sony Pictures Television International is the buyer alluded to in yesterday's news that advanced negotiations were taking place for an acquisition of the Netherlands' 2wayTraffic.  Per C21, the deal is imminent with SPTI buying a 75% stake and a private investor investing in 25%.

DISCOP and its joint partner, NATPE, will expand the DISCOP's reach with the launch of DISCOP Africa in Dakar, Senegal on February 25-27, 2009.  Full details of DISCOP Africa 09 will be announced in the near future.

FremantleMedia Enterprises has the international distribution rights to 112 - Saving a Life, a new series which it also co-financed.  Created by Germany's Action Concept, the show is currently in production for a debut on RTL.  Set in an emergency center, it shows the daily lives of firefighters, paramedics, and police working side by side.

Eurosport is launching a new high-def channel that will simulcast its flagship network's programming. Debuting on May 25, it will get going with the French Open-Roland Garros tennis Grand Slam.  The high-def European sports channel has already picked up carriage agreements areas of Southern Europe and Scandinavia.

After picking up the rights from 19 Management Ltd, 3DD Entertainment inked a number of sales for the 60-minute, high-def Spice Girls  Giving You Everything with TV4 (Sweden), TV Norge (Norway), Danmarks Radio (Denmark), MTV 3 (Finland), and Icelandic Television Company (Iceland).  It was also snapped up by TV3 (New Zealand), RTE (Ireland), VPRO TV (The Netherlands), TVR (Romania) VIASAT (Baltics), and other in-flight deals.  In addition, 19 Management handled the sales of the Spice Girl documentary to BBC1 (U.K.), Canada's CTV and CHUM TV, and Foxtel (Australia). Other sales were made by 3DD for documentaries Respect Yourself - The Stax Records Story (60 and 120-minute), Andrea Bocelli - A Child Destined To Sing (60-minute), and a selection of live artist concerts. 

It seems the U.S.' Bionic Woman has pulled in some rather bionic ratings with the U.K. launch bringing ITV2 its highest ever audience with a 2.2 million viewer average and a 10.5 share (9p slot) on March 11.  The prior best for ITV2 was Footballers' Wives: Extra Time 3 years ago with an average of 1.9 million.

HISPANIC MARKET:

Mexico's Televisa is working with Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) on a 13-episode scripted series based on Argentina's Los Simuladores (The Pretenders).  The format rights were picked up by SPTI from Telefe.  Production has already started on the high-def, 30-minute show, which will debut on April 30 on Sony Entertainment Television Latin America and on May 6 on Televisa, per Variety.  The format sees the humorous adventures of trained folks who try to solve their clients' everyday crises.

LATV's new spring programming lineup will start off on March 17. The bilingual network's expanded fare (listed in PT time) includes:
  • En la Zona (In the Zone) - Tues, Thur, 6p, 930p  A 30-minute look at the latest trends in music, film, fashion, and glamour with Viviana Vigil and Pili Montilla
  • Classic en Concierto - Wed, 6p, Fri, 6p, 930p - Artists featured in this music hall
  • Texty Videos - Mon-Fri, 7p - A 60-minute interactive forum for text messages and videos with Alexis de la Rocha
  • Verdad y Fama - Mon-Fri, 8p  60-minute biopics featuring personalities from entertainment, sports, music, and film
  • Wachale (Take a Look) - Wed, 6p, March 26 debut  A 30-minute weekly show spooking Latino television and pop culture with host Humberto Guida

LATAM MARKET:

Globo TV International renewed its volume agreement with Argentinean broadcast channel Telefe.  The channel has already aired the Brazilian distributor's Pages of Life and just recently broadcast the last episode of Snakes & Lizards.

AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:

Twentieth Television reached a multi-year licensing deal with TV One covering two series,The Hughleys and Divorce Court.  TV One now has the rights to air, for the first time in cable, all 89 episodes of The Hughleys starting April 5 (1-8p marathon) with episodes to air in limited numbers at a time on its VOD platform. The regular time slot is Mondays at 730p.  In addition, the network picked up a "best of" package of 120 Divorce Court episodes and VOD rights.  It airs weekdays from 4-5p.

Black Magic presented by Russell Athletic Group and State Farm will air commercial free in two parts on March 16 and 17 at 9p on ESPN.  It is about the injustice during the Civil Rights Movement, told through the lives of basketball players and coaches who attended and worked at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
