INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Corus Entertainment Inc. has inked a deal to acquire analog specialty television service CLT (Canadian Learning Television) from CTVglobemedia (subject to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission approval, of course). The price tag came in at close to CDN$73 million (about USD$74 million). Spain's largest media corporation, Prisa, brought a bank consortium on board to try to acquire the remaining 50% share of Sogecable that it does already own. Sogecable is Spain's biggest television company. The six banks from Spain, France, and the U.K., which include BNP, Banesto, Caja Madrid, HSBC, La Caixa, and Natixis, will finance Prisa's full takeover at 28 cents a share. Scandinavian distributor Nordisk Film TV World has been named as the distributor of all Swedish public broadcaster SVT's formats. Nordisk will launch ten SVT primetime entertainment formats, five scripted and comedy formats, and five children's formats, starting at MIPTV.The agreement will more than double the size of Nordisk Film TV World's format catalog, including formats such as Melody Challenge, Doobidoo, and others. As of March 17, the U.K.'s ITV2 will grow by three more hours to become a 24-hour broadcast network. The channel currently air from 925a to 6a. The GMTV kids shows will make their way to ITV4 rather than the present spots on ITV2. Indian audiences can now get more Korean fare as KBS World begins airing in the country on DTH satellite on Doordarshan's DD Direct+ free-to-air platform. The broadcasting follows an agreement between Korean Broadcasting System and Prasar Bharati, the Broadcasting Corporation of India. This will add an additional 5 million viewers to KBS World's reach. French/German channel Arte will take its cultural bend to a high-def level after receiving a high-def broadcast license for DTT from the French government. When airspace becomes available in Fall 2008, Arte will be able to begin broadcasting its regular and high-def programming simultaneously, according to C21. The distribution unit of France's Robin & Co, Calt International, inked sales for its Women! in 15 new places. Following a HBO Central Europe package agreement, the 2-minute series will soon air on HBO Czech (Czech and Slovak Republics), HBO Adria (Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia-Montenegro, Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina), HBO Romania (Romania and Moldova), and HBO channels in Bulgaria, Hungary, and Poland, per C21. The format rights have been sold to Spain's Sagrera TVE while Quebec's Canal Vie took seasons 1 and 2. LATAM MARKET: A new 60-minute special from MTV Latin America, Julieta Venegas MTV Unplugged, will mark the 20th MTV Unplugged production for the network. It will make its debut on MTV Latin America on June 5 and MTV Spain and the U.S.' MTV Tr3s in early June. It will be available to all MTV channels internationally. EXECUTIVE MOVES: U.K.-based Virgin Media named its CEO, Neil Berkett, six months after he first started the job as acting CEO in August. He was previously NTL's COO. (Rivals NTL and Telewest merged to become Virgin.) In other company news, CFO Jacques Kerrest has resigned. After 37 years with Canada's CTVGlobemedia, CFO Robin Fillingham has decided to retire next month with John Gossling stepping in as the new CFO. John was recently Rogers Wireless Communications' SVP and CFO as well as formerly serving as a KPMG partner. Justin Che has moved up in NBC Universal International Television Distribution to become SVP/International New Media Licensing. He will manage NBC Universal's new media licensing internationally, excluding Canada and the U.S. with particular focuses on Asia and Australia. He was promoted from his prior position as VP/International New Media Licensing. Sandra Chang was upped to take over the position from Justin from her previous Director position. She will mainly be responsible for France, Spain, and Latin America (including Brazil). Based in LA, Justin and Sandra will report to Beth Minehart, EVP/International New Media Licensing.
